Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

I qued a number of videos to listen to on my drive home and a particular video caught my attention. Apparently, videos don't log views anymore unless users "engage" with the video by commenting, liking or subscribing to a channel through that particular video. Be prepared for a large uptick in videos obnoxiously including something like "views aren't counted unless you engage with this video so like, comment, subscribe and hit that notification bell to boost my content in the algorithm" in the first thirty seconds. If it wasn't overdone before...

how is it that for over a decade youtube has so consistently made the worst possible decisions for their platform yet somehow keeps succeeding?

I see we're literally lying about video metrics now. Call it unicorns instead of views then.

it's annyoing that the guy who maintains the enchancer for youtube addon hasn't updated the firefox version since last year whilst the chrome version gets fixes and updates as recently as last week, is it really that hard to develop addons for firefox.
If it is the same extension I use (not updated since Nov '24) are you actually experiencing any issues that need fixing?

As it was said, expensive AND Google boycotts the competition (or it boycotts itself) so they have a monopoly that most normies, especially boomers + Gen Xers, arent in a hurry to put any effort in changing it.

Unless they comment "nigger"/"Faggot", Im going to assume its bots so they get no view.

Its how I'd do it, lol

I'm guessing Youtube started a/b testing again. I get no videos on Youtube homepage. I only see shorts and community posts. The community posts are also big af almost always filling the whole screen like this.

Its the new "Corporate artwork" genre except it looks even worse (and is even cheaper because the old one was still made by a human being).

And yes, the irony isnt lost on anyone that they are using AI art to advertise that they are hiring. Really sending mixed messages in there.

Has YouTube been blocking you from watching videos if you're not signed in for a while, or is that something new? Never remember seeing that issue before, personally.

Was actually on a site looking to buy movie tickets and when I clicked on the trailer that's the message I got.

It's been a thing for approximately a year now, at least for most people seeing it. There were a few A/B tests on that feature at first (most notably adding reCAPTCHA to view without logging in), but they've long dropped those. Most common on VPNs, but residential IP blocks have been hit hard, even more so if you're behind a CGNAT. My guess? It's going to spread more until you need to login to view anything. From Google's perspective, most people using the net are from their own locked down operating system with a near-mandatory linked account, or a browser with an account signed it anyway. Even more annoying when you land an IP that isn't blocked (or use your own account(s)!), and you get temporarily banned from downloading too many videos with yt-dlp anyway.

I'm afraid we're slowly getting there. You already can't watch age-restricted without a login and making a Google account is almost impossible without a phone number. I already had to switch from Private Internet Access to NordVPN two years ago because the former would CONSTANTLY make me solve Captchas while just using simple google.com text search.

There's another detail that isn't mentioned enough, which is the fact that in Europe you can't get prepaid SIMs without a personal ID. This map is from 2018, so it might not be accurate.

I know if you're using the YouTube app on something like a Roku or smart tv, and if you decide to watch a playlist that has a bunch of videos, YouTube will immediately pause itself after a few videos (depending on their length) and ask if you're still watching. Basically it does the same stupid bullshit Netflix does where it thinks because you haven't touched the remote button in a while that you fell asleep or went away so it shuts off for you if you don't respond in time.

IMO it's the dumbest fucking thing these companies could ever do. If i want to leave YouTube on all night while I'm asleep that's my own goddam prerogative. Fuck off and let me do what I want to fucking do without you checking up on me every now and then.

Off the top of my head - they're probably trying to save bandwidth. Same goes for sites that load content as you scroll down.
