over the years YouTube thumbnails have gotten more obnoxious and cringe

As long as they're not the thumbnails where the person makes that stupid shocked expression.
 
Op, I don't know why you chose those as examples for the thread, since they are downright loveable compared to what exists on YouTube. We have misleading clickbait, obviously AI images that lie to you, scams, disgusting gross-out images, and of course old faithful:

I get this guy recommended to me constantly. I don't know who he is or where he came from. I have never clicked on any of his videos because his thumbnails piss me off and I find them really off-putting. It's the same shit Mr. Beast does where they photoshop him to have uncanny, soulless eyes and an unnaturally white smile. I've seen others do this type of thumbnail too, but I think it came from The Beast. I don't get why this type of thumbnail works. It feels like my soul is about to be taken every time I look into the eyes. Anyone know what this type of thumbnail or technique is called? It's a very specific thing, not just AI upscaling or photoshop or whatever.

Vaguely related but dearrow is a pretty nifty tool.
It's community driven much like sponsorblock so it's not available for all videos but it's very helpful especially for channels who have series but don't actually label the series as such or contain them in a playlist. And with one exception that lasted 20 minutes at the most the community submitted stuff isn't faggy or preachy or biased.

youtube redux does it literally for free and you can customize your youtube page.


edit: youtube redux doesnt remove thumbnails, my apologies for retardation, but clickbait remover does.
