Surprised there wasn't a thread on this already, the demo just came out yesterday. I couldn't get into IX because I found it's story confusing.

That one fanfic I read about Dana coming back and living happily ever after with Adol is meaningless to me now because it's obvious that he belongs with Karja and she's way hotter than Dana anyway...and please put those puzzle pieces away, I am very well aware that reading shippy fanfics and being attracted to video game characters are autistic habits but we're all guilty of those things at some point in our lives.

Can someone roughly clue me in on the Ys series? It's one of those franchises I briefly gain awareness of once every 2 years or so, it looks interesting, but then I never follow up.
Mostly-silent red-haired Indiana Jones goes through various ruins, recovers ancient artifacts, slays cosmic horrors with swords, and then ditches the local women who have the hots for him without reciprocating because the only one he ever actually loved happened to be a goddess who sealed herself away with an evil MacGuffin.

Every time he gets on a ship to travel to the next place it wrecks and he loses all of the aforementioned incredibly overpowered magical artifacts, starting the cycle all over again.

Only YS games I played were I & II and origins. honestly the series should have died with YS five or so. I liked the charm of the first games and YS origin had main characters that weren't a an eye soar. I don't get the appeal with yet another game with generic red haired guy in milktoast anime world.

That's what I thought too, but they're just damn well made games, very competent. Fans will overrate them for sure but that doesn't make them anything less than good. Minus the bump combat ones.

The bump combat is actually really fun. It looks like shouldn't work but it does when you play them.

8 was absolutely fantastic, but 9 was just fucking terrible. I heard bad things about X but I think it was more bad optimization and bugs than design. Plus the series is hard to get into when every game doesn't matter in the grand scheme.

imagine Zelda but Link has red hair and he's also Dante from the Devil May Cry™ series and also all his friends are generic anime NPCs

looking forward to Ys X. maybe I'll finally get around to playing IX now that it's gotten some technical fixes. Falcom's programmers really need to get their shit together

It even has that old-school RPG thing where the protagonist dies to something comparatively mundane in supplemental material. In this case, Adol supposedly dies while trying to discover the North Pole.

Almost as bad as the stray idea of what happened to Chaz of Phantasy Star IV afterwards that the game artist cooked up.

As a kid I could never figure out how to pronounce Ys because I only saw it written and never heard it spoken.

What's so bad about Ys 9? I haven't played it.

Is that canon?

Is that canon?

In that time, society was limited to just foot and boat travel, so the breadth of Adol's exploration is truly impressive. It is said that he traveled to the center of Afroca to the South, as far as the River Tigres in Orietta in the East and, in his final years, set his sights on the North Pole - though it appears he failed to have gotten there.

The games are kind of his "travelogues" basically.

I was just about to post that.

Yeah, he's supposed to die at age 63 while trying to reach the North Pole. That was established way back in the 80s when Falcom first created the character, and they've apparently stuck to it.

Hm, interesting. I hope they make a game about that if they ever decide to cap the series off.
It would be hella depressing. I always thought he should have settled just down with Lilia.

It kinda reminds of Dragon Ball Online having Goku & Vegeta go off into a distant, uninhabited part of the universe to fight to the death before they die of old age. I like the "die doing what you love" kinda thing in stories.

It is worth noting that they are happy to retcon things by replacing games after-the-fact. For example, Ys III was overwritten by the remake Oath in Felghana, and IV's original games were overwritten by Memories of Celceta (which erased the settling-down-with-Lilia thing @Captain Manning mentioned, she had what was obviously Adol's child).

It's gonna take forever, basically. Especially because Falcom is busy milking Trails to death.
