Well if I'm remembering correctly... Sorbet was adopted from a litter from a stray cat that Chris had been feeding... I'm not sure where they got Pollo but he was probably a stray they took in...
Despite the risk of Feline AIDS, cars, territorial disputes with other cats, and fucking rabies, the cats would have been better off being strays.

Hell, he lets them wander outside for who knows how long anyway. And at least outside, they don't have the risk of some tower of fucking literal garbage falling and crushing them.

I'm not saying they should be strays, though. I'm saying they should be taken from Chris, and given a chance at a better life.

Chris' cats are what are referred to as "outdoor cats" in the US. We've got the highest cat population in the world, most of which are outdoor cats. They roam around and are given free access to the outdoors whenever they please. They come home for shelter and food. If no one took them in, they'd probably get killed by wild animals or freeze to death outside.

Their lives are substantially better with Chris. Chris and Barb treat the cats as good, or better, than your average owner of an outdoor cat. (Better in that most owners of outdoor cats probably wouldn't shell out money to take one to the vet if they got hit by a car.) They get food. They get shelter. They might even get some vermin around 14BC to hunt. Those cats are as happy as pigs in shit.

People who think the cats should be taken away from Chris have some bizarre, pie-in-the-sky notion of what standard practice for cats is like in the US.

Again, it's the dogs who are in terrible conditions. The dogs are helpless children who are disgustingly overweight and ill-tempered from being stuck in the house like veal calves. The cats? They're having the times of their lives.

The thing with outdoor cats is that chances are they'll have more than one house they'll go to, especially in a more rural area like where Chris lives... they'll probably go to some of the neighbors houses for extra food as people in those kinds of areas tend to feed visiting cats... and outdoor cats are very good at finding shelter if they need it. My next door neighbors cat once disappeared for half a year and when he showed up again, he was fine, save for a tiny bit of ear missing from a fight with another cat... and he lived in an area with much more cars... so outdoor cats are resourceful... there's a reason there tends to be lots of feral strays in rural places...

Certainly, but 14BC is better than other houses because Chris shells out for vet bills than the others. Most people wouldn't pay for vet bills for an outdoor cat. If they were going to, they'd be concerned enough about their investment that they'd keep the cat indoors, lest they risk it getting hit by a car again.

Chris is that right balance of stupid (and of course, money doesn't mean shit to him), that he'll pay for vet bills but otherwise let them continue to be outdoor cats. This isn't the first time he's done it either.

Heh, y'know, if it was up to Barb (her being a redneck more experienced in such matters), they wouldn't ever take the cats to a vet unless it was to euthanize them.

And vet bills aside, there's reasons why the cats keep coming back to 14BC.

I think the only reason the cats keep coming back is food... cats are very independent and very food driven... where I grew up, the cats of the neighbourhood had several homes they'd visit to beg for food, my neighbors oldest cat always came over to sit on our front step and beg me and my mum for food... and our house became his third or fourth house to visit...

I think it's just different here in the UK but cat owners, even if their cat spends a fair amount of time outside are willing to pay the vet bills if their cat gets in an accident... however if their cat was in an accident then they'd keep them inside for the sake of recovery for a while until the cat was better... something Chris isn't doing for Sorbet which makes me genuinely sad as an animal lover... with the injuries he already has, he has a higher chance of getting into another accident because he's just not recovered yet...

They stay at 14BC usually. That's their primary residence.

Oh no, Sorbet is almost certainly healed up by now. No broken bones.

That might be where they live, but I bet you my left kidney that they go to other houses on the street for extra food... they won't live at these other houses, but they'll act all chummy with the owners, putting and rubbing against them to get some titbits... cats are sneaky like that...

Sorbet might not have any broken bones, but I bet my other kidney he can't see too well out of that eye with the blown pupil... which will limit his vision on that side...

Indeed.

There's no more recovery that can fix that though. Any healing that would've happened is done by now.

The next solar eclipse won't happen in the US till 2024, so it really was a once-in-a-lifetime oppurtunity for Chris.

I mean it at least got Chris out of the house and doing something relatively "normal"?

Its boring as fuck but at least hes not running around in his panties trying to harass women,
Also a once in a lifetime opportunity for Chris.

Yes, getting hit by cars and getting stuck in garbage-filled rooms for days at a time until your fat lazy tranny owner decides to get off his lazy ass and go look for you, because he hasn't seen you in days, is just the bees-knees.

I don't believe in letting outdoor cats be outdoor cats. If you're going to get a pet, keep it inside where it's safe. Cats have been domesticated. They can and do live perfectly healthy lives indoors. But that is a personal preference, so I understand not everyone will agree with me and have their own reasons. I get that. However, I have several friends that do have outdoor cats and they absolutely would take their cat to the vet if something even less than being hit by a car happened.

So, while I agree with you about the dogs, I don't agree with you about the cats. at all. And if that is the standard for "average outdoor cat owners" then that just means most people who keep outdoor cats are shitty. It does not mean Chris is a good pet owner

You're sperging out. Tone it down a notch.

I didn't think I had to say this, but you do realize we're not talking about literal garbage, right? That's a joke we make.

Anyway, cats climb over and into shit. They love to explore. They get lost sometimes. Hell, if you're not careful, cats can get stuck in walls. This is unfortunately a normal fact of life when owning a cat.

And as noted earlier, the possibility of getting hit by cars is a consequence of letting your cat outside.

I guess.

I mean, cows have also been domesticated, but once in awhile they'll escape and get hit by trains or cars.

I think you're getting frothing mad because it's Chris, not because your arguments are grounded in reality. I don't think you'd read a story about some random blue collar, working guy letting his cats out and then chimp out about it.

You're convinced Chris is doing something special, or extra shitty here, just because he's Chris. Admittedly, Chris is a turd of a person, no doubt about that. But sometimes, perhaps very rarely, Chris will do the right (or at least follow the standard advice) thing. This is one of those situations.

Like I said, the US has the highest cat population of any country. Most of those cats are feral or outdoor cats. Not everyone wants to take in cats, but they're willing to feed them and let them roam.

What, do you want to just euthanize all of them?

Really? Every cat I've ever had liked to go in & out, so much so we had a cat door installed. We always kept up on their shots & their vet appointments, made sure they got their flea treatments, got them fixed, made sure they always had food & water, etc. I kind of assumed all people who let their cats out were like that (barring the Chandlers, of course).

That's pretty rare with poor people. Vet bills are expensive and outdoor cats are treated as semi-tame wildlife by a big chunk of people.
