"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

Except who would actually take him? Aren't Gaming news sites firing their journos in exchange for AI? The other ones loath him because he's not full on SJW like everyone else is.

He's better off being independent.
One thing AI can't replicate is being a recognisable name, Yahtzee (and ZP) is still a recognisable enough name to make it worth hiring him.

Yahtzee could probably just pivot back to game development. Actually, he's already doing that.
Maybe he's seen the writing on the wall. I doubt it though, he's about as dense as nikocado post shrink-ray.

One of the best things about FF16 is that they have the accessories shown as small icons above the health bar. Turns out that Yahtzee used the accessibility rings in his stream, or as I like to call them the shitter rings. It's a easy game, the fact that journalists need assistance with a a easy game and yet they think their opinion matters says it all really.

Which ones were it? I had the wolf one just out of curiousity if something happens if it levels up and not wanting to fuck around with the D-Pad (nothing happens and the wolf itself is shit).
I don't get how journos are so bad in games.

I don't get his Game of Thrones complaint... yeah it's inspired by it, but i don't get why he pointed that out specifically. Such a weird complaint lol
btw in the recent podcast he did with Nick, someone said "Lol you have it on Journalist Mode?" and that set Nick and Yahtzee off.
Also the game doesnt have many spongey enemies. The face that this is one of his main complaints, makes me think that Yahtzee is just shit at these sort of games. Limit Break? Switch style? use combos? Does Yahtzee just mash the attack button when he plays Devil May Cry? also that part about quick time events lol Erm why do they use quick time events????? idk, whats wrong with quick time events? This is such a shit review lol

They are bad because it became popular to lampoon them rather than the original reasons why they were considered bad in the first place (in case of qtes - cheap insta deaths and stopping gameplay). The qtes in FF16 are retardedly easy and just emphasize action cutscenes, while the GoT isn't too bad but doesn't really work when your character is a literal one man army.

Did Yahtzee ever mention the modern issue with qtes, that they aren't really quick time events and the action will just grind to a halt until you press the button (making them GBE - game blocking events)?

Nope! Just complains that he has to get taught how to use QTE's and that they exist!

I was baffled by the retardation of "why must I choose between action oriented or story oriented", you stupid fuck, it's a difficulty selector and they were nice enough to call baby journalist mode as "story oriented", that you are so fucking dense to not notice that detail really left me amazed.

As for QTE, I personally hate them since they don't actually add much of anything usually and it also means that you cannot have skippable cutscenes suddenly because well, you have to be able to press X! Same reason I dislike "immersive walking and talking" segments. I'm playing Trails into Reverie, also known as "a fucking book with RPG battles", I decided that I could do a battle better, instead of rewatching 20 minutes of unskipable story that I had already seen, I skipped all of it, kicked ass and took names and everything was fine in the world

I'd have to back and watch the stream but I think he had the ring of timely focus and the ring of timely strikes. The Torgal is fine honestly.

Yeah I didn't get the GoT comment either. It just isn't a meaningful statement to make, FF16 is only really like GoT in the sense that it's low medieval fantasy with an 18+ rating. I think his point is that a GoT like story can't exist along side the Final Fantasy anime giant kaiju shonen battles, but I don't know if that's true. The game didn't feel all that disjointed to me outside of the low quality side quests but the story was pretty good imo.

The game does have spongey enemies, if you don't know how to play it that is. The amount of damage and more importantly stagger that Clive can put out is unreal, you can end fights very quickly. FF16 is no masterpiece but it still very good albeit flawed, if Yathzee wants to make his trademarked cynical "review" then focusing on the games problems is fine but he didn't. He made a random comment about GoT, complained about white people and Clive's name for most of the review. The closest he got to a real criticism is complaining about the existence of the easy mode but even that was sabotaged by the fact that he was basically using it with the rings.

I think he just didn't have much to say about FF16, he didn't engage with the combat or story but still has to put out a review so he just talked about nothing for 5 minutes. You can see it in a lot of his ZP videos. If he doesn't care he just defaults cynicism and meanders around some vague problems he had. Gabe called him out for going into games with the intention of disliking or not engaging with them once and he threw a bitch fit about it.

Ben seems pretty tired with games nowadays, I can see him blasting through a lot of these AAA games with the intention of just getting the ZP out.

Don't tell me he also did the "how dare they not have Niggers in european based fantasy" (despite a ton of dark skinned arab characters)
His issue is that he can't tell one character of another because they are all white. Sounds like his problem tbh, I never had much of a problem remembering name or relationships between characters. I mean the game has a fucking wiki you can always reference. I find it funny that you can say "all white people look the same" with a straight face and one seems to care. I really wonder if he'd have had the same complaint if every character was black.

it feels like he has been doing this for most of his """"reviews"""" lately.
I'd say it's been plaguing ZP since the beginning. I'm reminded of his "opinion" on Call of Duty and Uncharted. Basically, he calls both games racist because you shoot the darkies (pretty sure that's a quote btw). For starters just shooting non whites in a video game doesn't imply anything in of itself. Secondly, it's not even true in any meaningful way.

Look at CoD, like 6 entries in the series are set during WW2. You shoot Japs and Germans (pretty sure Italians in one game), the Japs aren't white but I don't' think anyone disagrees that Germany in the 40s wasn't extremely white. The Modern Warfare games are set during the GWOT so a Middle East setting and enemies are a given unless this is a Resident Evil 5 situation where you're not allowed to show an accurate depiction of demographics in a geographic region then I don't see a problem. All that is pointless as the Russians and Americans end up being the real bad guys, I mean you spend most of MW2 killing Russians and then the Yanks at the end of that game. Then there's the Cold War games which have the Russians as the bad again. Lastly there's the ones set in the future where it's fucking Kit Harrington and Kevin Spacey as the main antagonists with the enemies being either a made up Martian nation on the fucking planet Mars or an American PMC.

The same is true for Uncharted, Nathan Drake might be a red blooded American WASP but that has no baring on what enemies the games throw at you. The first game has you shoot at South American pirates but the big bad guy is some white British dude. The second game is all about killing Russians as the sole enemies. The third has the British and the fourth is a South African PMC being paid by some white American dude. The fourth game is even funnier as the one of antagonists is some back woman who ends up being the protag of that games DLC. Nathan Drake kills far more whites in the from of Bongs and Slavs than any other group.

It's the most midwit tier form of commentary I can imagine. He can't think of anything to say so he brings up some vague point about how racist the popular thing is. It's the video game equivalent of saying muh Bush, muh oil, muh MIC.

This is such a transparent lie to justify nigger-fying the setting, it's like saying to a restaurant owner "such a nice place, you should pay someone to make sure it wouldn't burn down". It's especially heinous coming from someone who writes books, when the actual look of a character doesn't matter.

Surprised there isn't an explosion here due to him reviewing Chrono Trigger.

Full disclosure, most of the time I don't play the games Yahtzee reviews, so I don't know what he's getting wrong (though I suspect a lot, because every time I experience a game later it turns out he's wildly misrepresenting it).

Chrono Trigger though.... I mean, its Chrono Trigger. I played it as a kid, and revisited it again just a few years back. I know this game the way an autistic sperg knows a childhood favorite.

And.... well, Yahtz mentions "people who play the first few hours then stop" which is what I strongly suspect he did, because most of what he says is just wrong.

Not that this is surprising, but you'd think a video about Chrono Trigger would get a bigger reaction.

And where the fuck is a game like Uncharted supposed to go if it makes you piss and shid and fard your pants to see a brown person among the bad guys? Is Nathan Drake supposed to go exploring the Lost Grain Silo of Western Nebraska?

One part that got me was how he said the characters were outsiders to the plot , even though there actions affect the world and in context with the black omen , they just arrive when the queen was ready to sacrifice Schala to Lavos. Even though you can arrive just when she about to. Also it funny how he filtered by the boss before the zeal.

Yahtzee is like this because Gabe isn't around anymore to keep him in check with constant contrarianism. It's truly the only way to fight other contrarians. I can only assume he now lives in the outback educating indigenous children and hunting kangaroo.

Also I always found it interesting that he still uses the name "Ben" despite going on record having distaste for it, being the poster child of Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and hating his parents more than an emo teenager.

Nope! Does Keep et classy and spends most of his time on twitter.

Was it ever explained why he hates his parents so much?
