Fail Safe was supposed to be a serious drama.
Dr. Strangelove was a comedy. Peter Sellers in the title role, but also the British officer and the president.
The president character was based on Harry Truman.
Analysis: Mister Jones is randomly throwing shit at Trump, but not skillfully.

There's a whole sidebar available about how Strangelove was based on a pre-Cuban Missile Crisis novel, Red Alert, but Fail-Safe is based on a post-Crisis novel. (I've read both and IMO it could have been independent invention; they have some similar plot points but those are the points "drawn from the headlines." The author of Red Alert sued for plagiarism and settled out of court.)
Another sidebar is that Red Alert is not a comedy; it's the written Zero Hour! to Strangelove's Airplane! It was published in England, and like I said, years before the Cuban Missile Crisis, so it was probably stewing in the back of Kubrick's head for a while. Strangelove himself was entirely added for the movie.
When both movies were being made, Kubrick brought up the legal dispute again, now about the movies based on the disputed book, and the settlement from that is why Fail-Safe came out later in the year.
And also like I said, of course Zach shows off his chops by namedropping the popular twin.
Um akctually in the movie he was based on the perceived weakness of Adlai Stevenson, or at least that's what Peter Sellers said. "Give 'em Hell Harry" Truman was not known for his infinite patience nor inherent conciliatory nature.
He should watch Thirteen Days, or On the Beach. Actually, he should read any of the books the movies were adapted from. Or Lucifer's Hammer, or Alas, Babylon, or Earth Abides.
Frankly, Zach is the Nirvana-shirt teenager of the nuclear fear genre.
eta: mea culpa, those books in the last sentence are the kind where the form of the apocalypse didn't really matter, so I spaced out and forgot that two of them aren't about nuclear apocalypse. I still think he'd appreciate the themes. I think they finally adapted Earth Abides for TV but I have absolutely no confidence a studio would keep the right stuff in.
