Local media is reporting that the police in New Hampshire are probing whether or not the recent shooting on the Canadian border was by a Zizian. This was extremely similar to the Zizian shooting on the border in Vermont and I immediately thought of the Zizians when I saw it in the news.

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — A member of a group known to outsiders as Zizians that is linked to six deaths was bailed out of jail in Maryland on Friday.

Police in Maryland connected Jack “Ziz” LaSota, Michelle Zajko and Daniel Blank to homicide investigations in California, Pennsylvania and Vermont after a landowner found them living in box trucks at the end of a snow-covered dirt road last February, according to court documents and pretrial testimony.

Blank was bailed out Friday at about noon after posting $15,000. Blank’s attorney Rebecca Lechliter declined comment. Zajko and LaSota remain in custody and are being held without bail.

Blank’s release includes conditions that he must live alone and submit to GPS tracking.

The deaths linked to the group reached six last year when a U.S. border agent was killed in Vermont. The three members were later arrested on trespassing and gun charges in the woods of western Maryland. Seven of the group’s members are jailed in three states, all awaiting trial.

Maryland state Trooper Brandon Jeffries wrote after their Feb. 16, 2025 arrests that all the “suspects involved are to be questioned regarding other crimes that have occurred across the country and have ties with the Zizians Cult.”

Called “Zizians” by outsiders, the young, highly intelligent computer scientists appear to share radical beliefs about veganism, animal rights, gender identity and artificial intelligence. Since 2022, members have been tied to the death of one of their own during an attack on a California landlord, the landlord’s subsequent killing, the shooting deaths of Zajko’s parents in Pennsylvania, and a highway shootout in Vermont that left the border agent and another Zizian dead.

Jury selection was supposed to start recently in Cumberland, Maryland, where LaSota, Zajko and Blank are charged with possession of LSD and possession with intent to deliver LSD, multiple gun violations, trespassing and hindering a police officer.

The trial was delayed until June, however, after Zajko, who also is charged with resisting arrest, fired her attorney, briefly represented herself and hired a new lawyer.

Jack LaSota, a transgender woman who goes by “Ziz,” was supposed to be in federal court for a two-day hearing on whether to suppress evidence collected as a result of her arrest in Frostburg, Maryland, last year. Instead, U.S. District Court Judge James Bredar granted a motion filed late Wednesday seeking a competency evaluation.
The judge said LaSota, who has been detained in the Allegany County Detention Center, will be held in federal custody — at least while the mental competency exam is done and a report is prepared. Bredar also expressed doubt that LaSota’s trial on related state charges, which is set for June in western Maryland, will proceed as scheduled, due to the federal court’s finding.


“Counsel believes there is reasonable cause to believe that the defendant is presently suffering from a mental disease or defect rendering her mentally incompetent to the extent that she is unable to understand the nature and consequences of the proceedings,” attorney Gary Proctor wrote.

As the hearing got underway, Proctor said LaSota has demonstrated an inability to follow proceedings, equating being a fugitive with being transgender and accusing a judge of being part of an organized crime ring.

LaSota, sitting between her two lawyers in orange jail clothes, told the judge that Proctor had “confidently asserted to the court” in a previous hearing that she was competent and urged the judge to consider the complete court record.

“I will take your viewpoint into account. I promise you,” Bredar said.

Authorities have described LaSota as the apparent leader of what outsiders call the “Zizians,” a group of young, highly intelligent computer scientists who appear to share radical beliefs about veganism, animal rights, gender identity and artificial intelligence. Since 2022, members have been tied to the death of one of their own during an attack on a California landlord, the landlord’s subsequent killing, the shooting deaths of one of the member's parents in Pennsylvania, and a highway shootout in Vermont that left a border agent and another Zizian dead.


LaSota, Michelle Zajko and Daniel Blank were arrested last February after a landowner found them living in box trucks at the end of a snow-covered dirt road. Though they are not charged with causing any of the six deaths, police quickly connected them to the homicide investigations in California, Pennsylvania and Vermont.

“Ms. LaSota eschews the term Zizian and denies any and all allegations that she and her friends have formed a cult,” LaSota’s lawyers wrote in a recent court filing.

Proctor and co-counsel Jennifer Smith argue that police violated LaSota’s Fourth Amendment right to be protected from unreasonable search and seizure and that she was not trespassing because the landowner had given them until the next day to leave. They also argue that police illegally searched the box trucks without a warrant and therefore any evidence recovered should be barred from trial.

In their response, prosecutors countered that police had probable cause to arrest LaSota and her associates for trespassing, even if they had been given permission to stay another day because the permission didn’t apply retroactively. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Beim also argued that police were justified in conducting a protective sweep for weapons for officer safety and to determine whether anyone was hiding in the trucks. He said officers reasonably suspected LaSota and the others were potentially violent, based on information from media reports about the group.

Late in that year I and my co-founder Ziz, along with a couple other rationalists, attempted to do a peaceful but annoying protest at the CFAR alumni reunion where I planned to give a series of talks about mental tech, about how to build off-grid RVs designed to support intellectual work, some things I had learned about psychology, some things that troubled me about the community, and how the community could pivot to improve AI outcomes.​

We were immediately SWATted with a false report of a firearm, and then subject to what is hard for me to describe but I could call mobbing, discrediting, gaslighting, harassment, death threats. It was an incredible source of trauma, and deeply shook my faith in humanity, especially the rationalist community.​

"We were just trying to be annoying. GOD. Why are people so MEAN?"

After I parted ways, Emma and Somni and a few people that later affiliated with them did some horrible things, and Ziz has gotten a lot of the blame in the press, and I've caught a few strays in the process from people who don't know I parted ways.​

I haven't had contact with Ziz, Emma, Somni, et al since March 2022. Or at least, I've gotten no response to my attempts to reach out. ​

Why would you reach out? Are you just that lonely?

I need to address the elephant in the room. My old friend and Rationalist Fleet co-founder Ziz has been on the receiving end of possibly the worst press a person could realistically receive. While there are a few concrete events floating around in that press, a lot of it is speculation, and some people have incorrectly dragged me into it. I think Ziz is being maligned far more than she should be, though I have little comment on anyone else. So I'd like to explain some things the community and the press have been ignorant of.​

Why this? What good would come of it?

Ziz has always had a tendency to express her ideas through metaphors in fiction that are familiar to her. We spoke at length about Contessa and Doctor Mother from Worm; the Wardens from World of Warcraft; Frisk, Sans, and especially Undyne from Undertale; Tassadar from Starcraft; Harry and Dumbledore from HPMOR; Iji.​

She also introduced me to the Gervais Principle sequence by Venkatesh Rao of Ribbonfarm, which expresses cynicism about institutions, and argues that it's necessary when interacting with institutions to have a sensitivity to a kind of abject dynamic of power through strength. This led both of us to adopt a 'Karen'-like set of methods with ordinary institutions, although we remained committed to earnest principle within the broader effective altruist community.​

I was deeply traumatized by how several members of the rationality community treated me/us following the reunion, as well as by the sexual assault and torture I experienced at the hands of the police (which I have described elsewhere and filed a lawsuit about). ​

I was afraid to return to the case in Sonoma because of the death threats I had received. The one that scared me the most was anonymous, but later Jamie Zajko admitted to having sent it. When I left, that was still the state of affairs, and I took precautions for years to protect myself from Zajko. The moment Zajko was in custody, I returned to Sonoma and have been setting my affairs straight this last year.​

When I moved across the country, I ended up in a small town of kind, good-hearted people. At first I was hiding my extreme distrust of nonvegans for my own survival. But again and again people treated me with substantial degrees of kindness that I couldn't trace back to a cynical selfish explanation--despite being people who ate meat. Kind in ways that I never saw in the Bay area, or growing up (that I can remember). This confused me, as it conflicted with my models, and I had to halt and reevaluate and reformulate new models that took the new evidence into account.​

In 2024, I was mildly influenced by Contrapoints and Philosophy Tube, who both make interesting efforts to truly understand the people who believe positions they (and I) disagree with in a sympathetic way. And late that year I read the HPMOR fan sequel Harry Potter and the Prancing of Ponies, which presented some explicit models of how psychological errors arise mostly through childhood experiences in a way that added clarity to my models and presented a different path by which I could have healed myself.​

Ziz has made mistakes, consequential ones even, but I cannot imagine her being responsible for a lot of what people have accused her of. I speculate that Emma and Jamie are the primary causes of what happened, as well as the bad judgment of the people Ziz associated with, and I suspect that Ziz was the moderate in that circle after I left.​

Ho boy. See, here this is again, too. They genuinely doing understand that you can understand them and then not act the same way. They don't think someone can see like in all creatures and still eat meat, for example, but that absolutely is possible.

I have limited patience tonight and read through about half of this before I gave up. I believe @NoReturn covered all the important parts however. The terrible grammar and shitty perspective in the dragon drawing really did me in.

I recently finished reading Helter Skelter, previously I thought all the references to the "transon family" were just jokes but it's crazy to see the similarities play out between the two prosecutions. We even have dear Jasper Gwen here trying to jump on the sword for their leader like the actual girls did during the Manson trial.

I took a look at the Ziz's docket to see if any upcoming dates prompted the sperging, but things have been quiet. As of the 1st of the month, Ziz was still pending transfer to FCI Buter (likely FMC Butner) pending a competency evaluation. According to prior reports he was still refusing to engage in the process, and the next status report from the government is due on 4/30 so we will see if he continues to play possum or not.

This sucks! "The Guy Who Writes" (what's your real nym? one story throwaway account bro) forgets half the MOR lore and starts going on about broom proficiency.
Big Yud blew the references and timeline enough, this guy's even worse.
The professor gains and loses out of character traits as needed for the sake of lazy story moments, unevenly misremembered characterization, and for Guy to spout his extra-moronic "rationality tips" through an adult character for a change.
This descends into Mary Suedom after a while, since this "master operator" that Yud's a bit too dull to write convincingly can no longer think his way out of a wet paper bag. MOR had a clever cynic, this has a borderline donkey who alternates public rants with bizarre displays of sincerity and patience that Yud's version of the character couldn't muster to avoid insulting the pre-teen children of the aristocracy.
How do you make your idiot look smart and get away with everything, even after objectively screwing up? Make everyone else dumb pushovers who let this obvious outsider get a foothold in the social hierarchy. And not even in a semi-convincing way, like becoming subservient to an old-money rich 20-something (who claims to be self-made through an obviously failing unicorn horn wax company), even though it would let you set up a conflict for the future. But no, can't have that for our Mary Sue!

...this can't be some sort of insanely inside-baseball troll op, can it? What happens instead is truly absurd. The way I can read the story as most clever is if it's intentionally written to parody and subvert an imagined better story of the professor in every plot point. If it is, this Zizian fell for it.

As someone who toys around with vegetarianism because of this, I don't really see the point of bringing it up here. Is he saying that people are so horrible that if they commit murder, it's somewhat understandable and in no way harms your cause?
