Game you hate but everyone else likes?

Call of Duty, though I wouldn't go as far as saying that I hate the franchise. Campaign modes are okay-ish, I suppose. Zombie death matches can actually be pretty fun. But the real kicker is that their server lobbies are packed to the rafters with every prepubescent edgelord under the fucking sun. Not that people don't experience this shit elsewhere, of course. If you're into online gaming, then at some point you will experience the thrill of some tiny runt threatening to slice you up ninja style. Dumb shit like that is expected. But Call of Duty lobbies are fucking notorious for that shit and for that reason alone, fuck Activision and fuck Call of Duty.

god of war 4 was so bad I quit the game after 2-3 hours. The fighting mechanics are so fucking frustrating. The dumbass son is so fucking obnoxious. They wanted to make a believable father/son story? What is believable about the son not learning from anything his father does for the time I played.
The camera, the fucking camera was something fresh and turned into the biggest assrape SonySM could do. I don’t want to fucking fight enemies 360 degrees around me while a third of the screen is the bald ones back.
It’s a clusterfuck. I tried to like it, didn’t work.
Good for everyone who liked it, I guess.
God of war is on ice for me from now on.

Pretty much any indie that barely qualifies as a videogame, but somehow manages to get a massive and very obnoxious fanbase, you know, walking simulators, visual novels, RPGs with no combat system etc.

Boy i can fell it, i will see this game everywhere in a matter of weeks.

I'll probably be euthanized for this opinion but a majority of the Fromsoft library, mainly the Souls games come to mind. I've played stuff like Armored Core and Otogi and those games were alright, stuff like Cookie n Cream and 3D Dot Game Heroes are titles from them I actually really like, but Dark Souls and what I'm currently playing of Demon Souls never really grabs me and I don't know if its the overblown hype and notoriety these games have garnered over the years or what exactly is it about these games that turns me off. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying they're bad and I'm sure as hell ain't good at video games, but the design of the Souls games doesn't really stick with me. Idk if its having all these tools and options at my whim and being too overwhelmed to know what are good vs bad items, what are pointless stats to invest in, what are the best strategies for bosses, where to go next, etc etc. and there are people who really like that freedom and getting deep into the lore and while I really fuck with the art direction and atmosphere of these games I just can't get into them gameplay wise. Admittedly I sometimes need to do a quick google search whenever I'm stuck or don't understand what an item is for and it makes me feel like an asshole because I can't tell if I'm just overlooking an obvious hint or if the relevance of an item would be later revealed to me and I'm spoiling myself. Not to mention the combat just never felt all that engaging outside of the PVP but I try to play these games for the single player and not the additional multiplayer aspect that's partially tied to them. The games also feel a bit slow to me and I hate that in order to improve the combat speed I'd mostly have to resort to playing as a glass cannon playing the game in a way that people who have gotten really into the games may enjoy, but I feel it just ruins the atmosphere of being an undead knight exploring a castle and fighting monsters and stuff. I get that for a lot of people being able to read enemy patterns and doing parrys and backstabs is rewarding but not to me. I lack patience and I guess since the in game lore doesn't really grab me enough to really delve deep further into the world and wanting to know more I should've known they weren't for me but it sucks because I do want to like these games and there are aspects to them that I do enjoy quite a bit, but alas my tiny brain can't. It's not that I don't enjoy difficult games either, but the way that the souls games play out kinda test my patience and it wants me to play a certain way that I just don't think is fun, but I'm probably just sugar coating the fact that I'm just ass and nothing more. Around the time I stopped playing Dark Souls I believe I got to around the painted world and I just remembered stopping, Idk if it was because of irl stuff getting in the way but I never garnered the energy to drop back in and continuing. Currently been picking up a lot of the PS3 exclusives and I copped Demon Souls for cheap and wanted to try and give it a chance and while I enjoy the amosphere, the art direction, etc. etc. I'm getting the same feelings I did with Dark Souls although the game design feels a lot different in comparison and I can't tell if its any better or worse than how I felt about Dark Souls. I was told I would probably enjoy Sekiro and I really dig the look of Bloodbourne but I fear the same exact feelings I have with these other souls titles happening again and I feel like I just have to come to terms that I just don't like these games or I'm in a point in my life where these sorts of games don't appeal to me just yet, which has definitely happened before with some titles, but only time will tell.

I feel the exact same way about FromSoftware game, I got Dark Souls on the day it came out, the collectors edition and everything, turns out I didn't like it. My friends borrowed my copy they all loved it but I just found it boring. I didn't bother with the sequels. Bloodborne, however, grabbed me by the short and curlies immediately and I still sometimes boot it up for a quick run through. I also ran through DS3 once or twice with a friend and found it tolerable. I picked up the DS collection and still don't like DS1 or 2. BB and 3 are the only ones I finished.
The point being, you might want to just jump right into BB and see if you prefer it. It's faster paced, it's stylish, it's more fun overall. Just don't do what I did and start with the threaded cane, I beat the game and felt like a pimp but NG+ became a real ball ache and every other weapon is better unless you just want to style on faggots, then it's worth it.

That's fair. Soulsborne is never for everyone and frankly, that is a good thing.

Natural gatekeeping is the way for videogames and other media.

I'm not one for Dark Souls either, but I kinda wanna play bloodborne based on the art-style alone but there's no decent port of it on PC so meh.
For me, It's MMOs and metroidvanias. MMOs I just can't play cause I don't like playing with others unless it's co-op like Payday 2, I kinda wanna try LOTRO but I don't know where to start with that and metroids I'm not really a fan of because of the backtracking and needing to remember where everything is. And 4X, Stellaris is in this weird place where it plays more like Sins of a Solar Empire than Hearts of Iron and the like. That and it gets kinda samey of placing down buildings, building up a city and moving on from that, as opposed to RTS where it only takes me 20 minutes to get from dark age to imperial it might take 100 turns in Civ just to get up an age.

But for Indies, I actually like a lot. I pirate alot of games and try to play one or two new ones a month and sometimes I get crap like Haven but others I get something like Forgotten Anne or The Forgotten City and you can feel the passion of a game made by a small bunch of people.
Not for Broadcast, Endzone, Loop Hero, The Pedestrian, Empires of the Undergrowth, Ruina, Caldecott mod for Shadowrun HK, all stuff I've played or found this year just by seeing what gets updated on GoG or looking for it.

Half-Life. People gloss over the fact that it's a corridor shooter with awful level design and even worse gun play by talking about it's story. The story isn't even that good, it works fine enough but it's not anything to rave about and the much praised presentation isn't all that well executed ether.

Souls games are very bland and full of shitty design, but their fanbase alone seemed to launch them into the stratosphere. Even Yahtzee backed down from his original review and started saying they were good, probably after getting immense amounts of pressure to do so. It doesn't help that the fanbase deflects all criticism with "git gud". I'm not gonna git gud at a game I don't enjoy before I can judge it. That just means the game has an atrocious difficulty curve, which is one of many elements of bad design.

I had this same issue playing the game as a kid. I thought it was a shitty shooter with clunky controls and a subpar storyline. I lost a few sperg friends over it.

The same could be said about all games from the 8-bat era, nobody can say anything remotely negative about Metroid, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden or Battletodas without someone else saying "git gud".

Speaking of which, Metroid, that's a game I hate that everyone else likes.

It doesn't tell you at all what to do, and it comes off like a shitty Mega Man clone. There's no map, and no indication that you're going the right way. Just bumble around until you find things.

The internet certainly made it a hell of a lot more palatable, now that you can just mash "Metroid" into any search engine and get a few lines telling you what's happening and what you're supposed to do, but before the internet? It's shitty Mega Man. With an absurd password system.

There are many, many reasons Super Mario Bros. 3 is widely agreed upon as being the best game on the NES, with some considering it the best game of all time. Its difficulty curve is perfect, it controls like a dream, and it's still very accessible to this day. Even kids who think the NES is simply just too old to be palatable could enjoy it. It aged extremely well, while Metroid is still shitty Mega Man.

some faggot probably said:
but metroid came out BEFORE mega man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't care. Mega Man got the formula right on the first try. Play Mega Man instead, and don't waste your time on Metroid.

I tried playing the original Metroid on an emulator a few months ago, didn't get too far because the game never "clicked" with me, nothing in the game made me feel "i wan't to keep playing", Metroid II is probably even worse, with shittier graphics and and a tiny resolution making the exploration even more tedious.

I'm a Souls fan and even I don't disagree with the opinion that the games are full of shitty design choices and massive difficulty spikes. With that being said, I don't think that a steep difficulty curve or punishing the player are examples of "bad" game design in themselves, it's just different and it's certainly isn't for everyone.

However, you are right about the fanbase though, they do write off criticism as a lack skill on the players part even when shown shit like the Capra Demon boss fight or the awful platforming sections or the ambushes that just fuck you over for no reason. It doesn't help that the series has leaned even more in to the difficulty that, if the fanbase is to be believe is what theses games are supposedly all about. But that isn't what makes these games great in my opinion. Fantastic level design, challenging but fair gameplay and amazing atmosphere are what makes them great to me, the difficulty is almost incidental to that.

It's funny that the first game in the series is the one that doesn't have many of the problems that it's successors do. Demon Souls punishes the player by reducing your health by half and if want the other half of your life bar back then you have to risk changing the world tendency which will make the enamines harder if you die. Sounds horrible right? Yet to me it's the most fair game in the whole series because it isn't trying to kill the player in a bullshit way. The bosses in DeS are super easy if you understand their mechanics because they actually have mechanics that aren't just straight combat encounters with a few exceptions.

The bosses in these games have become increasingly annoying, they auto track during an attack, have combos that might as well be instant death and animations that designed to trick the player into dodging at the wrong time. It isn't just the boss fights but they are the perfect example of this. The worst part of all this is that this is what the fans by in large want.

HL1 has the same WASD controls as every other FPS since. What's clunky about it?
