He thought he had come up with some theory and mathematical formula to prove time travel was possible. Lucas has always needed to claim some “intellectual” pursuit that puts him above his competition for poonaner. He desperately wants to be seen as some troubled genius who if just given a chance will do great things for the betterment of mankind. His view of himself is that lofty. He is like a Christ figure, in his mind, preaching the gospel of telomerase and age gapping to the profane of Spokane. If only they would listen, he will have saved the world (and himself).

At first his grand idea was time travel. I think this shows just how far out of touch he is with how society actually functions. What he's advocating for is a complete breakdown of the social order and somehow we'll go back to a barter society. Let's say that pilot does steal that plane, while he's able to fly it, he's probably not knowledgeable enough to keep it in the air. So he needs to figure out a way to barter his ability to fly the plane to the guys who maintain the aircraft. He'll also need to barter for fuel. It seems horribly inefficient and would break down the minute the guy who maintains the plane didn't want to go for an airplane ride that day.

If only there was an instrument to quantify and collect the value of the services you perform and exchange them for goods and services performed and produced by other people who don't directly need those services at that given moment. Then again, I'm just a bigoted capitalist... so what do I know.
