Brother called me today to tell me that him and a half dozen other officers and a handful of SNCOs at Division/Regiment level all went in and filed paperwork to leave the service. The most he'd tell me the reason why was "If I have to attend one more fucking meeting about people's goddamn feelings..."

Lower enlisted, mainly the E-4 Mafia, are turning in "Two Weeks Notice" to their chains of command. Some of these guys are actually just clearing without fucking orders and leaving.

In a rational, truly professional military, someone at some headquarters would be toting up the cost of recruiting, training, and growing qualified replacements for the experienced people who are leaving. Takes a LONG time to develop a good senior noncommissioned officer, or a senior captain/field grade officer. But I don't think anyone at the upper echelons really gives a shit these days, except for the loss of pilots. Wonder what, if any exodus is happening in the various Reserves and National Guards.

Mighty glad to be long retired, with virtually zero chance of ever being recalled.

In theory, we retired military are subject to recall for the rest of our lives. Retired pay is actually retainer pay. When I retired there were three tiers for recall, as I remember - 0-5 years retired, 5-10 years retired, and 10+ years retired. Have been retired over 20 years. Even now, with the physical stuff, could do the last military job, as an associate dean of one of the language schools at the Defense Language Institute. A white-collar job, if you will.

When Desert Storm happened they recalled people. We're talking EVERYONE on the fucking list.

My unit got a 72 year old Chief Warrant Officer who had last seen duty in the Korean War. We had a dozen guys who had been out since Vietnam. WE're talking RETIRED.

My wife's unit, a medical unit, had 2 doctors who were over 60 that were recalled.

Depending on the unit, depending on the circumstances, and (it used to be) depending on the needs of the military, they'll recall you as long as your sucking air past your teeth.

It's not even that. It's really easy to forget those who sign up for the military have families and life. You may not think much about bombing sandniggers half a world away with no way to reach you. It gets more viscerally real when Earl can just drive a few hours to reach where your family lives and off them in revenge. Civil war is never pretty.

And that these planes and drones which are so almighty might be maintained by Cletus and Tyrone, who are so conveniently vulnerable to partisans, or who might even be sympathetic themselves.
