UK Wearing second hand clothes ‘an example of white privilege’, students told

Wearing second-hand clothes without this being blamed on “the bad morals of my race” is an example of white privilege, students have been told in a compulsory diversity course.

The University of Kent has instructed every student to complete the four-hour mandatory module, covering topics such as white privilege, microaggressions and pronouns.

The course, titled Expect Respect and seen by The Telegraph, includes a white privilege quiz where participants are asked to pick which of 13 options are societal benefits allegedly enjoyed by white people in the UK.

If the student ticks all 13, a gold star is awarded, and if not, a button appears directing them to retry.

One white privilege example listed is: “I can swear, or dress in second-hand clothes, without having people attribute these choices to the bad morals, the poverty or the illiteracy of my race.”

Other examples include “I can go shopping without being followed or harassed”, being sure of having “neutral or pleasant” neighbours and “I can do well in a challenging situation without being called a credit to my race”.

Scottish teachers have recently been urged to take a “white privilege test”, seen below:

The course on students’ moodle webpage also claims systemic racism is “built into the very building blocks of British society”, including schools, courts and churches.

It adds that some ethnic minorities engage in “white ideology” to benefit from the power “whiteness” brings.

Lecturers have been told in an internal email: “We expect all students, regardless of programme, level or site of study, to complete the module.

“It introduces students to the culture and expectations we have at Kent in terms of respectful behaviour and discussion, and also helps to increase students’ awareness and understanding about a variety of different themes and nuances in relation to equality, diversity and inclusivity.”

Staff have also been emailed by faculty managers to consider adding trigger warnings to exam papers, and carry out “pronoun checks, make a note of them and use them correctly” when meeting new students, such as they/them or ze/zir.

Philistine and irresponsible

However, it has sparked a backlash from professors, who told The Telegraph they are refusing to comply and branded it a “philistine” betrayal of academia’s core values.

“I’ve said I’m not going to do it (add trigger warnings or decolonise reading lists) and I'm not going to tell students to do this module either,” said Ellie Lee, a professor of family and parenting research at Kent, adding “quite a lot” of colleagues had followed suit.

“Encouraging people in the academy to narrow their field of reading and narrow students’ reading seems to me to be simply philistine and irresponsible. Students are being instructed through this module that there is a correct way of thinking.”

Prof Frank Furedi, a sociologist at Kent and author of 100 Years of Identity Crisis, criticised the “thought policing” move, adding: “There’s a danger of promoting conformism on campuses under the guise of education that you indoctrinate people into woke dogma.”

A Kent spokesman said the module was "supporting everyone to ensure all members of our community are treated with dignity and respect".

What is it with thrift stores being so special?

The fat acceptance movement bitches about this too. If a normal sized person buys some 5XL tent and turns it into a nice looking outfit, the whales will screech that she's stealing clothes from fat people that "don't have many options."

How would you know clothing was secondhand?

I bought a couple shirts from a consignment shop years ago, I wash and care for them same as the rest and they're in good repair.

Unless I tell someone, they have no way of knowing.

If they think white people walking around with holed shirts and ripped pants are held in higher regard than those that don't because "it's cool, Bro", I got some news for them..... at least if you're a prospective employer.

Are the white people who think this shit up even white themselves?

"If I can't get a good deal, nobody else can either!"

But seriously, I remember there being some blogger who showed people how being able to sew is still a valuable skill in the modern era and people were pissed she was thrifting in the fat people section.

Well, the racist answer is that secondhand PoC clothing have name tags on them, either because they're prison outfits and everything is labeled there or because it's some other kind of uniform with a name tag area.

The actual "white privilege" (actually rich privilege) answer would be really fucking expensive and distinctive clothes that either are in limited enough supply to track, or bougie charity auctions.

The normal people answer is you don't know unless you catch someone at a garage sale/rummage sale/good will, but people are such social media whores they out themselves.

lol they absolutely fucking hate White people, don't they? Everything Whites do or not do is always white supremacy, racism, and oppresion on POCs
being sure of having “neutral or pleasant” neighbours
I wish they had expanded on that- why can't POCs assume they have neutral or pleasant neighbours? Is it because they tend to live among other POCs?

Thrift stores are awesome and you can't convince me otherwise. Some of the best stuff in my wardrobe I found second hand. This seems like some thinly veiled "consoomer" propaganda. Do not recycle old " BRAND ". Throw out old " BRAND " and buy new " BRAND ". We have infinite slave labor in Vietnam to produce ever greater quantities of "BRAND " that you MUST CONSOOM.

“I can go shopping without being followed or harassed”

I, a white woman, was once asked by a very weird and awkward Asian guy if he could watch me shop. He was very insistent. I was rather creeped out.

I, a white woman, was once made fun of in Skechers by a flamer who was some kind of brown because I was feeling faint from heat and anemia and was a little dizzy.

I, a white woman, have been followed in stores by guards merely because I had a large tote bag with me.

This whole test is just a pity party for black students. Don't tick off all 13 boxes of shame even if you totally don't agree with them or have those experiences in your everyday life? Ding ding ding! Try again. Complete the quiz until you get it right. With this level of indoctrination I'm surprised they aren't starting it out on kindergartners first. Get them thinking about that privilege early.

Of course it's the UK.

So if ze fails zir's test does the professor have to add a trigger warning above the failing score so ze won't have sad feels?

Given how many Black Women in New York City have Abortions vs have babies (it hovers just above 50%) it might be unironically true
I'm wondering what the stats on black abortion are. An excellent point was made that black women only make extra welfare cash when they birth live children, so these ghetto queens have incentive to avoid abortion.

It's going to be difficult to convince these individuals to increase the abortion rate if they have an active financial interest in staying away from the clinic.

My theory is the replacement rate is just too high for them to keep up with. You can only have so many. Especially when your boyfriends keep "Finding them in the crib not breathing and have no idea where those bruises came from".
