I can't seem to edit the post anymore (time limit I guess?), but since that video was sent to the abyss, I was able to find another perspective which I'll upload directly to this thread. The one quoted above was just a black screen with isolated audio, but I think this version is ultimately better because you can see how spontaneously it happened, and can observe the immediate reactions (to be frank they were either too distracted to realize, or tried to play it off like they didn't give a shit so as not to draw attention to it)

Is this some shit started by Projekt Melody? Do they make their own avatars? Who the fuck are hololive and why do they matter? Why do they all speak like they've got nasal cancer and when did this whole thing get so big?

What the fuck have zoomer crated this time?

Not started by Melody, though she's the first one to become massively popular on Chaturbate.

A professional artist draws the model, and someone skilled with animating in Live2D rigs it. If 3D, a similar process happens that I'm unfamiliar with the exact details of.

Hololive is the most popular Vtuber talent agency worldwide. I can't really detail the entire history of the company, but the short of it is, they started in Japan, a girl with a goal of being an idol singing on a big stage joined the company and started seeing great success. Wanting to reach broader audiences, new talents were added to the group very gradually over time, with different personalities, tastes, etc. and those ones became very popular as well. All the while, English-speaking people caught wind of it gradually and became fans but it was still rather niche. Eventually the presence of English-speaking fans caught the attention of COVER, the parent company of Hololive, and they worked to create an Indonesian branch, and then an English branch. The English branch saw explosive success.

They are relevant for various reasons, but I attribute their relevancy to continuous production of new content including Songs, Live Performances, Concerts, and in general their streams have a great deal of clippable moments that highlight funny/interesting happenings. Some attribute the spark that caused Hololive to become recognized outside Japan to Sakura Miko saying "Nigga" on stream in Grand Theft Auto 5, because it was funny to hear a native Japanese speaker saying nigga without knowing what it meant.

For their voices, a majority of them (with a few exceptions) are instructed to voice act because they are playing a character. This is particularly true for their JP branch; something about higher pitched female voices being more attractive over there. Hoshimachi Suisei used to speak in a very high pitched voice until she was told by a doctor that there would be very harmful effects for her if she continued doing that, so she decided to start speaking in a lower voice. I have a feeling it may shift in that way for more of them as well, since it must be hard to always speak in that high tone of voice.

She innovated in the space when it was still new but the technology most vtubers use nowadays is quite different from what she used (hers uses 3D rendering while most today use 2D "models" composed of several layers of images which shift and distort in relation to each other to simulate a smoothly-animated cartoon), so it's hard to draw a direct line of descent from her to most of today's performers.

Usually, no. They commission the creation of the "models" out to artists, some of which have become quite skilled at "rigging" them (designing them in such a way that the movements look smooth and correctly proportional). Some modelers do preform with their own models, though.

For the English-speaking Internet, roughly around mid-summer 2020 when Hololive debuted their first generation of English streamers. There were "indie" English-speaking performers before then, as well as those who spoke English well in the Japanese or Indonesian branches of various agencies, but that was the first major agency to debut a branch primarily targeting the English market. It coincided with the uncertainty of the coof and the BLM-related violence across the country at the time, so they proved a comfy escape from reality for weebs.

I don't get why so much faggotry is going arround Gura specifically. Like, she is ureasonably big even for the rest of Vtubing and I keep stumbling upon pepople who simp for he to an unreasonable degree and go fucking schizo about it. Is she an EN's ultimate pedobait?

look at it this way, the bigger a content creator is the more retards you can find. it's obviously a small but vocal minority, same for any fandom in existence. a lot of my friends are huge gurafags but they're good people i can trust, for an anecdotal example.

powerlevelling but granted, one of them is a dirty commie that believes it's ok for people to die for the sake of communism Good, and they're a current mod on the gura fan server afaik. but alas, i'm not friends with them for their political views
