The opening shot is one of his most flattering yet tbh. I actually like the dress but my eye goes immediately to the right pec which is just so off lol. Im straight but boobs are just so nice to look at - it just cannot be helped. Estrogen induced boobs are conical and spaced out so strangely on the male ribcage - even if they have surgery. Ive said it before but transwomen have managed to ruin the sanctity (or should that be sanct titty) of boobs - its honestly shocking we have allowed it to get to this state.

The closest I can think of would be the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which is interesting for all kinds of reasons and particularly interesting in the history of militant Islam in the modern age since it was perceived to be a showdown between the Muslim world as a whole and the outright atheist state of the Soviet union while it was conducting its war in Afghanistan. This essentially created the modern Jihadi movements that were interested in trying to organize a Pan-Islamic war against the perceived enemies of Islam, which saw tons of non-Afghanis, such as Saudi Arabians, including people like Osama Bin Laden, flock to Pakistan and Afghanistan to train and fight the Soviets. In that they were extensively supported by the American, Saudi and Pakistani governments.

After the Soviets ultimately retreated from Afghanistan a lot of these fighters started to consider Western powers, especially the United States, to be their next enemies because they did not like United States interference in the Middle East, especially where it concerned the Holy cities, which then saw them morph into the more familiar organizations like Al-Qaeda. Since all of this its become common for fundamentalist Muslims from around the world to travel to foreign conflict zones that they perceive as being a battle between the forces of Islam and its enemies even if they have no real connection to the place at all, most obviously the foreign fighters that traveled to Iraq and Syria to support ISIS when they claimed to be starting an Islamic state.

Obviously its a complex history, and its particularly interesting how the crucible for a lot of this was specifically to do with the Soviet Union and its interests in Central Asia. The fact is that the Soviet Union was officially an Atheist state with historical contempt for religious structures, including Islam, which were perceived in much of Marxist theory as being backward, oppressive and misleading people about their relationship to class oppression. This went both ways, radical Islamic movements have historically been extremely anti-Marxist, especially in places like Saudi Arabia, which is a large part of the reason America supported groups like that. A notorious example is in Iran, after the Iranian revolution, which was assisted by left wing groups in the country, the clerical establishment that ended up taking over the country to this day organized a violent purge of Leftist groups within the country despite previously working with them, banning basically all of their parties and imprisoning their leaders before ultimately executing massive amounts of them in the late 80s.

Suffice to say the history between real Marxists and Islamists has not been at all a positive one, and there's a lot to talk about it considering he's ostensibly a leftist talking about the life and times of Islamophobia, and yet somehow I suspect this doesn't come up much in the video, does it?

It shouldn't surprise anyone that they get it spectacularly, catastrophically wrong:

When Algeria was fighting for its independence from France, the French justified their occupation in part by claiming that Muslim women were uniquely very oppressed, in particular oppressed by wearing veils, which the colonial government banned. France banned Muslim women from wearing veils again in national territory in 2004, claiming it was for their own good. And a lot of Muslim women have objected to this pretty colonialist idea that inside every Muslim woman, there's a non-Muslim woman struggling to get out, or the idea that Muslim women aren't aware of patriarchy and aren't capable of challenging it from within their own intellectual traditions.

There's so much sloppy distortion and conflation here it's almost literally melting my mind. First: France never banned Muslim women from wearing "veils" in "national territory." The 2004 law prohibited the wearing of conspicuous religious symbols in public schools and was seen as targeting the hijab because the non-conspicuous religious adornments (necklaces etc.) of Christians and Jews slipped through. There are debates to be had about the merits of this law and the French devotion to (the appearance of) secularism in public life, but you can't start by misrepresenting the facts — women are free to wear hijab in 99% of "national territory." The only veils banned across all of France are those that cover the face, such as the niqab, and that prohibition is folded under the general ban on face coverings in public because people who can't be identified pose a security risk. It's equally illegal to walk down the street in a balaclava.

Second: veils weren't banned in French Algeria, either. They were certainly attacked by the French as symbols of traditional Muslim patriarchy, but efforts to root it out were limited to ceremonial staged unveilings of Algerian women. Plenty continued to wear the veil. Have none of these people seen The Battle of Algiers? The colonial government supported women's emancipation as a carrot on a stick, an incentive to love the master rather than joining the men to overthrow him. It was a tactic of persuasion, not interdiction. That the French did it out of cynical self-interest goes without saying, but again — you cannot start that conversation by misrepresenting the facts.

Third: the suggestion that veils are necessary or essential to Muslimness insults all the Muslims who have, from within their own intellectual traditions, shaken off the veil. Most Moroccan women don't wear it. Have their brains been hijacked by the "non-Muslim wom[e]n struggling to get out" of them? Of course not. They've simply decided, like the more relaxed contemporary followers of other faiths, to pick and choose which ancient edicts to entertain and which to toss in the trash bin of history. The fundamentalists will always deride the reformists as not "real" Muslims, not "real" Christians, not "real" Jews, but fuck if I care about the opinions of fundamentalists. Every holy book has been reinterpreted a thousand times over. Anyone who wants to reconcile dusty old religions with modern ideas of liberty and justice should support reinterpretation. Yet every treatise about Islamophobia Bad takes the word of fundamentalists as gospel, as if any movement against the veil is necessarily a movement against Muslim women, and as if the condition of Muslim women is reducible to the politics of the veil.

How enlightened of PT to dunk on the French. Yes, those horrible French, so obsessed with the mystique of the veil that they failed to really see the desires and calculations of the women who wore it or didn't. Very cool to drag that attitude while... only discussing Muslim women in relation to the veil. Ignoring the women who conflict with his desired narrative, just like the French did in Algeria.

Once again no PTROONPHOLIO why ?

The makeup artist is not unskilled, but her wheelhouse is soft glam with forays into editorial styles. She doesn't do heavy, polished drag, and that's what PT went for in his KGB agent/'80s suit looks. The opening look is better — it makes the most of her skillset and adds an appropriate level of muted softness to his face. (Too much softness leads to a look like Jordan Peterson's Ideology, where he reaches so hard for ethereal that his bones look incongruously strong.)
