In public school we never actually reached world war 1. We barely scratched the Civil War. We did have a unit on the Holocaust but that was in literature class with the "Diary of Anne Frank."
My point here is that unless the kid is reading the text book for fun they likely never heard of the Treaty of Versailles in the first place.
In most schools, WW1 is taught in super broad strokes with a TON left out. In general, the narrative is:
1. Pre-WW1, nationalism ran amuck and Europe was a powderkeg looking for a spark to blow it up, as all the countries were in alliances to attack each other if one was attacked
2. Serbia is being pushed around by Austria-Hungary so nationalists killed the Arch-Duke Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary
(Note, SOMETIMES they'll mention that the Arch-Duke being killed was a HORRIBLE thing/that those damned Nationalists ruined everything because, in one of those ironies that you can't make up, Franz Ferdinand was actually a SUPPORTER of Serbian independence so they destroyed their own cause by killing him).
3. Germany gives Austria-Hungary a blank check to punish Serbia, knowing that Serbia would refuse Austria-Hungary's demands and that brings Russia into conflict with Germany and Germany in conflict with France. Great Britain is aligned with France but tries to sit out until Belgium gets invaded as part of the invasion of France, forcing Britain's hand to declare war on Germany.
4. Everyone think's it's going to be a short war/"Before the end of Summer"
5. It's a long and bloody war with the debut of tanks, gas attacks, Submarine/U-Boats, trench warfare (but actual battles are not mentioned)
6. Christmas truce of 1914 mentioned to show that the troops really didn't want to fight and if left to their own devices, would have been friends
7. Wilson won't join the war, making Teddy Roosevelt super triggered
8. Wilson gets re-elected on an isolationist platform done to target German-Americans but is also openly and quietly sending Britain/France loans to help them pay for the war
9. Uboats start sinking ships
10. America joins the war after the Lusitania sinks and Germany declares unrestricted submarine war
(Note, SOMETIMES they'll jump from Lusitania sinking/America joins the war but sometimes they'll mention the Zimmerman letter as the final straw that got us involved)
11. Russian Revolution and Russia withdrawing from the war
12. Germany gets a cease fire after their last major offense fails as American troops start coming in to kick ass
13. Versaille Treaty; Germany takes the blame for the war and beggered with economic sanctions/reperations to the Allied Powers
14. Wilson wants the League of Nations to prevent future wars
15. Wilson told to fuck off by the Senate
16. "This isn't a peace treaty, it's a cease fire and war will begin again in two decades tops!"
In regards to the government freaking out about Christmas shopping and logistics maybe this wouldn't be a problem if Americans were more like East Asians and gave cash on holidays instead of more plastic junk that nobody needs.
Cash on Holidays is a mixed bag. It's basically saying you don't give a shit about actually buying something someone wants so you give them money and:
A. Expect them to wait even longer to get what they want (since stores are closed on Christmas day and if you order online, you will be waiting longer)
B. Assume they can even find what they want, since a lot of stores sell out of stock so you will have to order online/third party sales ala Ebay to find what you want.
Cash gifts only work if the person giving it to you basically doesn't know WHAT you want or has burned you badly in the past with garbage gifts that they stopped trying and just give you money to avoid causing a scene with a crap gift.
