That's why I think it was just a regular old transaction account and not any kind of actual retirement fund. She definitely hadn't had the foresight to create such an account and she never had an employer that would pay into her 401(k).
Edit: almost forgot another point. I don't know how it goes in the USA but around here an early withdrawal from a retirement fund requires jumping through several dozens of hoops and can take weeks to go through.
