Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

The funny thing about BT was that combined arms doctrines fell by the wayside during the Succession Wars (partly because, y'know, game's about Mechs, not tanks and infantry). I want to say it was the FedSuns that started reviving the idea with the Regimental Combat Teams (which were hilarious levels of 'fuck you' thrown at an enemy -- Mechs, armor, infantry, artillery and air support). Clan Hell's Horses also uses a combined arms doctrine, which irritates the other Clans extensively.
According to the lore it was Melissa Davion in the 29th century who reorganized the majority of the FedSuns regiments into RCT's. Of course not all (the Robinson rangers or New Ivarsen Chasseurs for example remained Mech regiments with some support elements). Plus transporting an entire RCT (1 Mech regiment, an Aerospace wing and several regiments of tanks and infantry) takes up enourmous assets (Jumpships and Dropships) which did not fir the warfare of the 3erd sucession Wars which was essentialy raiding campaigns. The 4th Succession Wars was a change when one House suddenly wielded it's army like a sledgehammer again (and this House had backup thanks to an alliance with another)

Oh and you don't need nukes to take out a Warship. Just look at the FedCom Civil war: during the opening battles an Avalon class Warship was destroyed in orbit over Kathil by a ramming Dropship. Some joke that the Fedsuns naval strategy has evolved into "Ram everything"

You know, in a potential Aerotech Space-Sim that could be pretty fucking cool for a setting. One of my favorite Space-Sims of all time is Conflict: Freespace, and the plot there is that during an armed conflict between Terrans and Vasudans, a third race (called Shivans) pops up and starts to wreck everyone's shit with a level of technology never seen before.

I could imagine a similar storyline being quite amazing, where you start out as a pilot on some backwater Periphery border, doing your tutorial missions where you shoot down pirates, a few missions where you fight some Periphery warlord getting a bit uppity on your border and then a fleet of WarShips popping up, just dishing out destruction left and right.

Freespace had this amazing campaign that was a losing battle with only minor successes here and there, but ultimately an unstoppable enemy. Something along those lines set in the early Clan Invasion might be a pretty cool game.

I can totally see that as an effect of the Succession Wars, that logistics and communications are so fucked for generations, you end up with a massive army but all conflicts boil down to small scale skirmishes, partially cause you simply lack the ability to operate on a large scale and everyone is so used to small-scale stuff, you basically have no one who can even manage the logistics necessary to operate a large army.

This isn't just about getting troops to another planet (though that is a pretty steep cliff to scale in itself), but you also need to coordinate troops on the ground and be able to communicate quickly between a vast scale of different units.
Just for reference, when the Black Hawks were shot down in Mogadishu, there were plenty of ground troops closeby and air support was also present. However there was no direct communication between the different troops, so the air support was directing the groundforces to the site of the crash via the regular communication channels.
Ie: The pilot reports that the ground forces have to go right at the next crossing to his radio guy in the base, that guy reports it to his superior, who reports it to the superior of the ground roces, who reports it to his radio guy who reports it to the ground forces who drove past that crossing 5 minutes ago. I once saw an animation of troop movements in the city over time and it's surreal how many times they ended up doing a wrong turn due to the delayed communication. They ended up going through the same roadblocks over and over. Communication for an experienced army with perfect access to all lines of communication in modern times can be a bitch if there's an oversight like this. Just imagine how this would pan out in BT, where communication beyond company level might be nonexistent for many units, simply cause they barely had a necessity in the past 50 years.

Also doesn't help that an operation on the scale of Hanse Davions attack on Capella would be something that people avoided for generations, since it might escalate to yet another Tintavel Massacre/nuclear escalation of the Succession Wars and a heavy investment of troops that could backfire in various ways, such as being weakened on other fronts and getting attacked there or simply losing the troops after the operation fails and then getting your shit slapped hard in return.
Glad to see another FreeSpace fan here! As to the logistics... that's exactly why the FedSuns had two years straight of absolutely massive maneuvers before they finally kicked it off... and why the Steiners were your typical German logistical cock-up with THOR.

EDIT: One could actually make a BT mod for FreeSpace Open. Not sure how to handle heat (since you need to include AB as something that causes heat) or weapon groupings (primary/secondary), but it has all of the necessary components otherwise. Just need models, someone to make missions and a story... Thankfully that last one is easy thanks to how much stuff exists in BT.

Don't forget when Tyra slammed her Shilone fighter into the bridge of the Dire Wolf.

Oh, right. I forgot about that. BattleTech is another victim of the Bridge Bay Windows trope.

Lesson for all space ship designers out there: there is literally no reason for your bridge to be anywhere near the surface of your ship. Bury it under as much armor as you can. If you need Mk. I eyeballs looking at the enemy, send a redshirt to look out of a porthole and report back via the intercom.

Small difference though: the Dire Wolf was repaired and put back into action. And it is still active in the Wolf empire's fleet. Fun side note: that ship survived the battle for Terra (when Amaris attacked) managed to survive 13 years of naval Guerilla warfare during the occupation of the Hegemony, survived another attack on Terra and survived the Exodus (though before joining the Wolf touman it was called the SLS Kharkov)

I don't think that's every ship though.

I imagine when fresh warriors are being given tours of the ship when they come to the bridge and proclaim "And this is where Tyra valiantly flew her Shilone fighter into this very bridge slaying ilKhan Leo Showers" They even have the spot marked where he was standing when she collided with the ship.

It's enough of them. Most BattleTech starships have pretty definite slots with windows near or at the prow. Most of the ones where don't see that are the ones that have been drawn from a rear angle so you can't see the prow at all.

Here are three examples by three different artists:

Unironically, yes. The Clans got a pretty big chubby for the FRR after they realized just how far they were willing to go for their freedom. Not sure how well Leo Showers is respected these days though, what with the Clans winding up ass-fucked by his decision to invade the Sphere.

EDIT: @RomanesEuntDomus https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=87385.0 Looks like I was remembering correctly and there was an Aerotech mod already released. Sadly the guy responsible looks to have dumped it and left, and hasn't been active since 2017.

Favorite orion everyone? I'm partial to the ON2-M so many kinda take away from it's command ride feel.

Lot of good varieties but the gauss for cold direct some lrms for smoke mines and or indirect with a trio of m pulses for when your body guard isn't doing enough just works.

Plus STD engine so keeps taking hits.

My favorite Orion is a Victor.

I jest, but for some reason I've always had much more luck with my Victors than with my Orions. Way more than just a 5-ton difference would imply. In particular the 9D (for when I'm feeling snipey) and the 10D (for when playing FedCom Civil War) have always been incredibly solid for me. Meanwhile, whenever I fielded an Orion it usually just died without doing much.

I'm the same way. Once you get to the top of a weight class there's not really anything you can't do with a design that's five more tons heavier. A 40 or 45 ton medium like the Phoenix Hawk or Vulcan can do anything a 35 ton Light can do, and have better survivability at the same time. An Ostroc, Ostsol, or Quickdraw will do whatever a Wolverine or Griffin can do. For an Orion's job you've got the Zeus or Victor, the Thug is a good upgrade over the Whammy...

I really like the ON1-M for its variety of weapons, but the way how the weapons are spread out is just weird. The standard Orion has this massive LRM-rack in the left torso and where do the techies put the LRM-20 of the M variant? Right, the left arm. I dunno, I just dislike the idea of the toaster-fist Orion.

The ON1-K version is pretty solid, too. No kinky new Helm Memory Core toys, but a very solid mech nonetheless.

On the contrary, an Ostroc and an Ostsol can’t do what a Griffin/Wolverine can do better - jump, while still having good armor. The difference between 55 and 60 tons is firmly in the mobility. With fusion engines and maxed out armor, a 55 tonner with minimum heat sinks that goes 5/8/5 has 13.5 tons free. A 60 tonner will only have 11 tons free. To get the same amount of weight to play with as that 55 ton machine, you have to drop 2.5 tons of armor, down to 10.5 tons on your 60 ton machine. Meanwhile, 10.5 tons of armor on a 55 ton mech that jumps gives it 15 tons of free weight to play with. that’s enough for 4 extra heat sinks, a large laser, two medium lasers, an SRM6, and ammunition, all while having a manageable heat curve. You’re not fitting that on a 60 ton mech that jumps without some work.

That's my experience as well. The Victor thing is an outlier, but in general if you're going up a class you might as well go to the upper end if you're looking for maximum efficiency.

Just finished listening to Forever Faithful and I quiet enjoyed it. Will be picking up Divided We Fall once I get my free token in but in the meantime more En Garde.

That being said, this is assuming that you’re keeping the same movement profile. A 5/8 mech like the Dragon has to lose five tons to be able to jump like a Griffin. 4/6/4 certainly can pack on the weapons, even at 60 tons

True, and sometimes you might just not bother with Jump Jets and just take the mobility hit. The Dragon is actually a good example of that. Since I use mine as long-range plinkers, I would not bother giving any Dragon variant Jump Jets. JJs are useful for getting you to good firing positions in general, but they're exponentially better the closer you are to the target, and once I have a Dragon dug in behind half-cover within 18 hexes from the enemy I'm unlikely to move it just so I can get as accurate fire out of them as I can.

If it were down to me, I'd swap the Dragons' engine down to 4/6 and spend the tonnage on more armor and better weapons. A 'Mech labeled a "brawler", carrying two weapons with minimum range, one arm without two actuators, one rear-mounted weapon, and the other arm containing the only point-blank weapon in the build is just... seriously, did the Kuritans commission a workshop staffed entirely by blind baboons to design that fucking thing? Because talk about false fucking advertisement there...

Did you really need to ask that question when you already know the answer?
Hey, the Kuritans have come up with some good designs. The Grand Dragon is perfectly serviceable, the Panther is a very fun meme, and I'm a sucker for the Akuma's "everything but the kitchen sink!" design philosophy. Plus, they came up with MRMs and anything that makes Clanners go "hang on, how many missile tubes?" is good in my book.

And the Dragon wasn't even made for the Kuritans. It was meant for the SLDF (read: the Terran Hegemony Royal Battalions), but once it was turned down the Kuritans decided to run with it because it was called Dragon so of course the Draconis Combine couldn't turn it down.
