I like Hannah Gadsby but I'm not really surprised.

Her Nanette special on Netflix started out as a genuinely funny piss take of herself growing up as a butch lesbian in Tasmania. Half way through, though, she goes "Surprise!" and reveals that some of the stories she'd related had been tweaked to be palatable, and actually you'd been laughing at a lesbian's trauma, and the self deprecicating nature of stand up comedy is bad for queer people because it's just a means of furthering self hatred, and the audience is all complicit in that punching down, and so she was quitting comedy.

Which was... interesting, intelligent and thought provoking, but I was annoyed because I signed up for le funny lesbian and I don't like being ambushed (although I suppose that was the entire point of the format). But since she adopted a super serious business stance it makes sense she'd double down on it. The only reason she's been embroiled in this is because she was referenced in that leaked internal memo as an example of how Netflix is investing in LGBT creators.

Yeah, I get it as a Netflix special but I would’ve hurt myself rolling my eyes so hard if I’d like, paid to be in the live audience.

Comedians and all artists draw on their own painful experiences all the time. Self-deprecation indicates we are able to - or at least attempt to - examine ourselves from an outside perspective, and question whether or not that outside perspective is something we should consider and perhaps even make adjustments/improvements because of it.

We should know what it is about us that makes us exhausting, so we don’t exhaust the people we do not wish to exhaust. How am I coming across? What are the optics here, and are they working for me? Should I perhaps lol calm down? Have I gone on too long, thus cashing in any and all goodwill I had previously incurred? What if I just maybe slinked off and stayed quiet for a year or so, would that benefit me? Probably!!!

But since when do troons grasp optics.

I have never seen this claim even in here. Some say all trannies are pervs but even that isn't a commonly held belief. We know that there are multiple different flavors of trans, that's partly why this thread such along one.

So no, not transwomen are pedophiles but transculture does give protection and opportunities for them. There are plenty of groomers working on confused teens both online and IRL trans youth support groups. People are told to not listen their uncomfortable feelings if they are triggered by a tranny. Some pedos trans out to avoid or minimize legal consequences after getting caught. People are told assume transphobia when transperson is called out even when it has nothing to do with being trans. Plus of course the bathroom, changing room and other gendered spaces having become accessible for trannies with punishment for those speaking against it.

To compensate for this we need overrepresentation. Also adversity made our creativity flourish so we've got more novel and interesting things to say, unlike those conventional stories which are played out, so stop commissioning romcoms about a white/cis/straight Karen finding a white/cis/straight man. Also centering white/cis/straight voices as the norm reinforces societal preconceptions about xyz so it's damaging."

For LGBT stuff you also get the bonus of "if you feature more LGBT stuff more LGBT people will feel empowered to come out so actually maybe it's like 50% of the population that are gay/trans".

Of course even if Netflix gave 2% of Netflix originals to trans content - there's over 100 Netflix original movies this year, so let's be generous and say they start making three trans movies a year - they still wouldn't be happy. There'd also be some entertaining infighting along the lines of "only one Netflix original movie was made by black trans people last year, and none of them were non binary, and all the trans creators who had stuff made were HSTS straight".

Not to mention the more niche you make something, the fewer talented creators you'll find. There might be a range of black disabled trans lesbian content creators, but talent is rare, so if they put out an all call for black disabled trans lesbians to pitch they may well not greenlight the majority of the dross they get presented with (which then becomes a statistic along the lines of "Netflix rejected 95% of pitches from black disabled trans lesbians in the last year!")

Even bringing comfort to the dying can't be tolerated if a nutter on the internet doesn't like it.
