Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Or will his running mate automatically replace him just the way Vice-President is supposted to step in after the Big Man in the White House chokes on a piece of matzo? Does he even have a running mate yet?

The economy is contracting. People, regardless of what the business media are saying, is starting to panic. They're beginning to hoard as supply deliveries slow down and as the dollar goes down. They rather own physical goods than stay in the dollar. The smart ones are buying metals, land, stocks, and crypto.
It pales in comparison to the type of hoarding that went on during the 'two weeks' of early last year. This feels like the cause is completely different, and that's because it is. The only way I can describe it is eerie.

Obama had a housing crisis and Biden has... whatever the fuck you wanna call this.

Most Americans don't really travel, even south of our border, if they do they go to a resort in Cancun for spring break or Costa Rica, where everyone speaks English and they have all the amenities they're accustomed to in the USA. They don't see the extreme poverty that exists in some places in the world, which would enable them to recognize it here, or the high standard of living you find in Mexico's DF, Montevideo or Buenos Aires, which would clue them in to the real reasons people sneak in.
A hearty "meow" to you, fren. Very spot on. As one who has driven at length all over Mexico, there are slums like any other country and there are very nice areas as well. Even in a nice area, you need only travel cross town to see the difference. Mazatlan is a great example and even flying in and taking a shuttle/cab to the resorts, you're going to see the worst before you see the best.

I'll add an important point to the conversation. What we are seeing at our border right now is not an influx of Mexicans. Most that wanted to be here came a long time ago. It's every other country using the weak point of Mexico to cross our border. The Mexican people I've known for decades (some rich, many poor) are quite happy with their generally simple lives and they don't really lust for material things like Americans do. Their younger generation, yes. But they can make that happen in Mexico these days as their middle class is growing like crazy. They are very family oriented and family comes first above all. Something we could really learn to take to heart these days.

Corruption, whether their own government or the cartels, is part and parcel of living in Mexico. Money for huge projects just disappears into some Governor's or official's pocket. Have seen it many times. Mexican standards of "governing" make even Biden look like a saint.

I'd say last year was the system getting stress tested, and for the most part it held out in the short term once people calmed down and got past the initial hurdles. This year it's more like the system just beginning to crumble from all the cumulative stress that's been building.

Biden has a manufactored crisis. Its one artifically created due to the economy being shut down b/c "trust the science".

Pure petty spite built that crisis. Covid was something the deliberately worsened, making the response an utter nightmare to handle. Then, once they got in, Covid became the only thing they were above water for so they had to keep maintaining it as a crisis. And then Afghanistan happened, their ability to do anything tanked, and Covid became their only lifeline to a any policy at all. And now we are here.

Look at the Haitians at the Mexican border or in that caravan, they didn't canoe it to Veracruz, they flew over. They spent money to get there, to wait for the right time to cross and to build their little shantytown on the border. They weren't eating mud cookies in Port au Prince.

We should deal with them the same way the Dominican Republic does.

I am not saying that the US is going to definitively revert to some pre civil war form of government, I don't think that is likely. I am just saying that there is a long tradition of states rights vs federal authority in this country and that the current happenings (like 2nd amendment sanctuaries and states ignoring orders from the federal government) are just a part of that long tradition of tug-of-war.

People from outside of the country see stuff like that and without understanding the history of our nation, think it is a ramp up to balkanization or civil war. Maybe they think that because that's what it would be if it were happening in their country, I don't know though.
not just people from outside the US, it's a lot of people in the US because so many people really don't understand how our system works even though they live here

everytime people try to make predictions about what is going to happen over the next 20 years via comparisons to the Balkans or Argentina just stop listening

House votes to hold Trump ally Steve Bannon in contempt

The House voted Thursday to hold Steve Bannon, a longtime ally and aide to former President Donald Trump, in contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from the committee investigating the violent Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.

In a rare show of bipartisanship on the House floor, the committee's Democratic chairman, Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, led the floor debate along with Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, one of two Republicans on the panel. Still, the vote was 229-202 with most GOP lawmakers voting “no,” despite the potential consequences for Congress if witnesses are allowed to ignore its demands.

The House vote sends the matter to the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, where it will now be up to prosecutors in that office to decide whether to present the case to a grand jury for possible criminal charges.

The partisan split over Bannon's subpoena - and over the committee's investigation in general - is emblematic of the raw tensions that still grip Congress nine months after the Capitol attack. Democrats have vowed to comprehensively probe the assault in which hundreds of Trump's supporters battered their way past police, injured dozens of officers and interrupted the electoral count certifying President Joe Biden's victory.

Lawmakers on the investigating committee say they will move swiftly and forcefully to punish anyone who won’t cooperate with the probe.

“We will not allow anyone to derail our work, because our work is too important,” Thompson said ahead of the vote.
Republicans call it a “witch hunt,” say it is a waste of time and argue that Congress should be focusing on more important matters.

Indiana Rep. Jim Banks, leading the GOP opposition on the floor, called the probe an “illicit criminal investigation into American citizens” and said Bannon is a “Democrat party boogeyman.”

Cheney and Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger are the only two Republicans on the Jan. 6 panel. Both have openly criticized Trump and his role in fomenting the insurrection, even as other Republicans have mostly remained silent in the face of Trump's falsehoods about massive fraud in the election. Trump's claims were rejected by election officials, courts across the country and by his own attorney general.

The Jan. 6 committee voted 9-0 Tuesday to recommend the contempt charges after Bannon missed a scheduled interview with the panel last week, citing a letter from Trump’s lawyer that directed him not to answer questions. The committee noted that Bannon did not work at the White House at the time of the attack, and that he not only spoke with Trump before it but also promoted the protests on his podcast and predicted there would be unrest. On Jan. 5, Bannon said that “all hell is going to break loose."

Lawmakers on the panel said Bannon was alone in completely defying its subpoena, while more than a dozen other subpoenaed witnesses were at least negotiating with them.

“Mr. Bannon’s own public statements make clear he knew what was going to happen before it did, and thus he must have been aware of -- and may well have been involved in -- the planning of everything that played out on that day,” Cheney said ahead of the vote. “The American people deserve to know what he knew and what he did.”

Even if the Justice Department does decide to prosecute, the case could take years to play out - potentially pushing past the 2022 election when Republicans could win control of the House and end the investigation.

There's still considerable uncertainty about whether the department will prosecute, despite Democratic demands for action. It's a decision that will determine not only the effectiveness of the House investigation but also the strength of Congress’ power to call witnesses and demand information.

While the department has historically been reluctant to use its prosecution power against witnesses found in contempt of Congress, the circumstances are exceptional as lawmakers investigate the worst attack on the U.S. Capitol in two centuries.

Attorney General Merrick Garland gave no hints during a House hearing on Thursday.

“If the House of Representatives votes for a referral of a contempt charge, the Department of Justice will do what it always does in such circumstances. It will apply the facts and the law and make a decision consistent with the principles of prosecution,” he said.

Democrats are pressuring Justice to take the case, arguing that nothing less than democracy is on the line.

“The stakes are enormous,” Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin said in an interview with The Associated Press.

If the Justice Department doesn't prosecute, the House has other options, including a civil lawsuit. That could also take years but would force Bannon and any other witnesses to defend themselves in court.

Another option would be for Congress to try to imprison defiant witnesses - an unlikely, if not outlandish, scenario. Called “inherent contempt,” the process was used in the country’s early years but hasn’t been employed in almost a century.

The lingering acrimony over the insurrection, and the Bannon subpoena, flared Wednesday at a House Rules Committee hearing held to set the parameters of Thursday’s debate. Under intense questioning from Raskin, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican who defended Trump and opposed the Bannon contempt effort, said he accepted that Biden is the president but would not say that Biden won the election.

Raskin said, “I know that might work on Steve Bannon’s podcast, but that’s not going to work in the Rules Committee of the United States House of Representatives, Mr. Gaetz. I’m sorry."

Hopefully these next few years get Hitler's body out of his grave in Argentina and in the US. It can't be any worse than what we've been having so far for the last oh, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, hundred, hundred and ten years?

At this rate that'd be a fucking miracle.

Gas hits $7.59 a gallon in CA town

To be fair, this is kind of a special case. This town isn't even really a town, it's a gas station and some small resorts in the middle of Big Sur. It's expensive because it's a long way from anywhere, on a very touristy route, so they can charge the idiot tax for not filling up before hitting the road.

Nancy Mace is Ben Sasse in female form.
Beutler, what a loser. I can't decide whether she actually thinks this is a good strategy to win re-election, or if she's deliberately sandbagging the chance for an R hold in her district. The WA GOP is so worthless that it could be either one.

This WH Press Secretary is not going to do well...

As anyone accused you have watching too much Fox News even though you don't watch Fox News?

Is this all from today?? How the fuck do you fuck up so many times in one day you make Psaki look competent???

Congrats black lady, you just set a new speed record.
Hate who she supports, but Psaki is legitimately great at her job. She has a cunty answer for almost anything, never hesitates to spin tough questions into ridiculous strawmen instantly, and manages to usually keep ever so slightly ahead of the non-stop issues her braindead boss creates for her.

Think of it as more of a taste of things to come.
