Stamper's dad - the man he's named after - used to abuse him: negligence and physical. Stamper's mentioned that his father would get drunk on the couch while Stamper was forced to cook the man food on threat of violence if Stamper didn't, when Stamper was old enough to work the stove. My folks used to say that people in homeless shelters stab each other over food, clothes, a spot to sleep, or even just because they're unhinged and gotta kill something for almost no reason. Which....does happen in the really shitty ones run by the government which tend to be understaffed and underfunded. Ones run by charity's are a little better but harder to stay at cause unlike government ones charities expect you to pull some weight around if you wanna stay.

So you peaked my curiosity and I had a look at the near-by shelters closest to that home depot where Shad was:

Firstly, the only ones with available beds seem to be youth accommodations. Shad's hit 30. I don't think they're gonna let him in.

Secondly, the closet one is 2 hours away on foot

Thirdly, youth accommodation means the age-bracket of people who might recognise the bloke in the skull-balaklava with the funny accent for Shadman; and then everyone on the internet is going to know that Shad is destitute & homeless. Imagine what a blow that would be to his delicate ego.

Fourthly, Shad got face-doxed on the 18th of October, about a day before he got kicked out (assuming my hypothesis is correct), but he only found out about it the day after on the 20th when people started posting his mug in his twitter feed. Which means whatever plans he initially had in going to a shelter probably fell through when he realised he wouldn't be able to disappear into obscurity simply by taking off his mask. He needed a place where there wouldn't be anyone to recognise him.

So all four points leads straight to an abandoned house as the only viable option left to him.

i don't think shadmans fucked up worldview and pedophilia are the result of his parents, role models, or of any other person of authority, to be frank. some people are just naturally degenerate, y'know? if anything, i think something happened to him in his adulthood that drastically changed him. be it something he did in the military (assuming he's not lying about that), something he witnessed, or some other medium.
