Funny thing. When I was a kid, nobody had purebred dogs. Dogs were pretty good at replicating themselves to ensure a supply of free pups for as many as wanted them. Back then you drowned the female pups because nobody wanted the hassle of spaying or puppies.

And there were zero shitbulls.
Where the fuck are you from?

Nah. Adopt don't shop doesn't work anymore. Shelters are completely full of fucking pit bulls and pit mixes that "need to have their family all to themselves" and will lie abput bite history and health to get dogs out of there. Rescues pull the rest and sell them for hundreds. The odds of getting a good dog right now for cheap are very slim unless you have connections.

If you want a predictable, stable companion dog first figure out and research breeds that fit your lifestyle and then start looking for breeders. There are breeders that really really care and put in the work and money to make sure their puppies are going to be healthy and of good temperament. Finding them is the hard part, because most don't advertise on the web but you can contact them through breed club listings by email or phone. Dog shows are a good way to talk to people and find good breeders too, of course. And by dog shows I don't mean the one in the OP.

The dog breeding world is now a more or less closed off place because of the vilification of breeders. But if there are no breeders, there are no dogs. All dogs come from humans in one form or another, you just need to find the trustworthy people who make that happen. There are actually some breeders who will adopt out their retired show dogs to people if you don't want a puppy, too. You as a buyer or adoptee need to put in the work and communicate with people, you can't just expect a dog to fall in your lap.

Sorry for the autism, I just feel like most people don't understand how it is with dogs these days. It used to be easier before pit bull breeders and owners ruined everything.

Pitbulls are a dime a dozen now due to ghetto overbreeding. You can get one from any Tyrone or De'Qwandrius just as easily as from a shelter. The quality either way is very much the same. If you want something that isn't a pitbull you would have an easier time getting a senior dog if you can handle the vet bills and health problems that will arise. Getting attached to an animal that might not be with you long is depressing. But at least the dog will have a home.

If you really want a pet a cat might be a better alternative. Sheltered are flooded with cats. Animal control here has over 200. Kittens are a dime a dozen because people let cats roam or chuck them onto the street when they become adults. They'll move away and leave the cat behind. So many people don't get their cats spayed or neutered. An older can can be a quiet companion without all the work of training a kitten and dealing with its hyperactivity.

As we are on the topic of freakshow breeds, I'm gonna leave this here... nothing against the channel, I just want you guys to see this "cat".
So bloody weird. Doesn't even behave like a cat. He has a very strange reaction to the whole grooming process. He must have some sort of discomfort, itch or pain or something.
if you notice he only does that when his butt gets scratched. For cats the butt is an erogenous zone, so it feels good he's just being weird about it.

It definitely happens. My sister has some kind of pit cross that was left in a box with his siblings at a park when he was around four weeks old. So he had super early intervention and as a result is perfectly fine with cats, other dogs and children. The trade off though is he's a terrible guard dog. He will bring strangers toys.

And that kind of extreme intervention may be necessary to get that family dog the pit defenders talk about. He was not raised by a bitch, he was raised by humans. He had extensive training in a ranch environment. This may have been all to him losing any ability to guard. As he's a dumb dog and there's no way for him to tell apart a "bad" human from a good one. The same thing with dogs. He can't differentiate a "bad" dog from a good so they're all "good". The Pyrenees could tell one of their "pack" members from coyotes or feral dogs. He doesn't seem to have this ability.

Tl;dr: Pits are dumb as rocks but if you get one early enough to teach it all things are good you'll get a family pet, but never a guard dog.

Reminds me how one of my childhood friends had a Jack Russell Terrier. Supposedly, as a kid, her house got robbed in the middle of the night way back when and one of the burglars distracted the dog by playing fetch with him.

Thankfully, no one got hurt.

Mine would get all licky and silly when I scratched her butt. Beautiful blue-eyed white Persian with an actual nose -- what they call "doll-faced". There was no doubt about her purebred status -- she had the coat, conformation and temperament typical for the breed.

She was a lovely cat, perfect hearing, elderly and declawed. I don't want to know how such a sweet old lady turned up homeless, but I made her last few years as luxurious as possible until kidney failure eventually did her in.

There are still a few old-style breeders who don't go for the extreme flat faced look, and their cats are just gorgeous. Fuck the rest of them -- cats that can't eat or breathe properly have a terrible life.

Forgive my sperging for a moment but I have to give my two cents about cropping and docking.
Now I believe cropping and docking on pets is dumb, that being said on a working dog there’s actually a reason for the madness.

Personally I work with a breed of hearding dog and we do have a vet come in to dock the tails and remove dew claws when the puppies are around 5 days old. My vet uses a special tool to dock the tails and we’ve never had a problem with the puppies crying or showing signs of distress. I forget what the tool is called but it looks like an empty spool of thread that you place the tail into then twist and the tail is docked cleanly. Then some disinfectant and a dab of surgical glue to close the tail and they’re good to go. Some vets will suture the tail but that’s up to the vet.

The reason why we dock the tails and remove the dew claws is because when these dogs are hearding cattle, sheep, or horses it greatly reduces the risk of injury to the dog. These animals will stomp when mad and if the dog’s tail gets under hoof then at best it’s broken and at worst it gets ‘de-gloved’. (The skin is completely pulled off the tail).
With the dew claws it’s a precaution because nine times out of ten they will get caught on something and ripped off.

Tl;dr: Docking and cropping on pets = stupid and bad.
Docking and cropping on actual working dogs = fine if done by a vet.

I don't disagree but here's a counter point to advocate for it: Dogs like bulldogs who often undergo docking as well should still be docked because they haven't been bred for tail stability. I have seem bulldogs specifically with REALLY fucked up tails. Like it looks like a broken corkscrew and tails that are unstable like this can also be injured easily because of how bad the tail is. That being said, make sure that a trained breeder/vet is doing these modifications.

Dew claw removal and docking also should be done EARLY in a dogs life at a few weeks old when everything is still soft. Cropping happens still at puppy age but a bit older.

I do advocate for general dew claw removal as well because they get caught on anything including collars and I have had my own doggos get injured from this. But again, this needs to be done at a few weeks old puppy age for safety.

Gotta give an obligatory

to this thread.

Jokes aside I have high hopes for this one. I know it's probably been mentioned before but pug breeders are basically the white version of "toad dog" breeders.

I went to the house of a pug breeder as a kid. Everything reeked/was covered in hair. Then there was seeing these poor, bug-eyed dogs, who could barely walk without getting winded. The worst part was hearing them. You could hear the 7 or so pugs from the next floor, just wheezing & panting.

Never felt bad for something just having the misfortune of being born until that day.

Idk if this counts but it still makes me MATI. I thought about making a “Animal Modifications Thread” because shit gets pretty fucked:

My neighbor had a rottweiler/doberman mix with a tail. At first I didn't even know what kind of dog it was. She was overly friendly and a terrible watchdog too.

These thuglifes think because they docked a few tails or ears without a casualty that they are experts who don't need to training. But a major infection is no joke. I'm sure that they cover those up. These poor dogs are already so unhealthy that they can't really take much stress.

Good thread OP.
One thing I know that hasn't been brought up by anyone is brachycephalic rabbits. I don't know how to do pictures correctly, but imagine a rabbit that looks like it had it's face smashed in with a frying pan. People for some reason think unnaturally flat faced animals like that are 'cute,' when all it really does is make their face and head anatomies into deformed nightmares.

PS @Lost Soul Your avatar picture of a Wendigo looks badass. 😎👍

Look at a human baby and then look at smoosh faced animals. It's the same reason the teddy bear has become rounder as time went on.

You can actually see a similar trend in cartoons and anime, especially comparing anime from the 1980s to anime from the current season. I'm not going to shit up this thread with weeb shit though.

I never saw if there was a firm decision if we're allowed to share other species of intentionally deformed animals, but since someone already scratched the surface on horses, I figured I'd contribute a bit more in that vein.

Because to me, the saddest and most fucked up horsies are miniature ponies. There's really no such thing as one that doesn't have some kind of issue, since most of them suffer from some flavor of dwarfism.

True, which kind of sucks. Makes me wonder if these people have a severe unacknowledged case of baby rabies, if they need to have a flat 'baby face' in something that normally has a slight bit of a snout compared to a dog.

Also, my earlier post made me remember something. It's not just domestic animals, there are 'Xtreme' breeders of farmed white-tail bucks. Not so much in body size, but you'll see bucks with unnaturally huge racks of antlers, sometimes with up to 20 tines on each antler. I first caught site of them on YouTube, some of these deer look a bit freaky looking.
