The Final Fantasy Thread

FFV is my favorite one, because it's the only one I've played. Also quick question: what's the difference between the Pixel remaster version of V and the one that's already on Steam?

Final Fantasy is one of my favorite series of all time even if I don't care for some of the games. Can't really force myself to get into 15, maybe 13 trilogy one day. My FF autism immensely increases my enjoyment of FF14.

Beaten FF1(nes),FF4(hardtype),FF5,FF6,FF7,FF8,FF9, FF12 and Tactics. Got very close to the end of FFX but lost progress. Very solid battle system too. I can't pick a favorite. I even 100%ed those god awful steam ports of FF5 and 6. I don't know if I'm going to buy the pixel remasters since I'm also working on the snes FF games on retroachievements.

My most wanted games for pc are Bloodborne (Never happening) and FF7 remake. Nothing but goddamn leaks even though FF7R had limited exclusivity.

FF7 is my favorite but I increasingly think it’s an accident. Made by a completely different Square and has a lot of its acclaim falsely attributed to the duo of Nomura and Nojima. Who remind me of Zack Snyder and George Lucas in so many ways.

Nomura reminds me of David Goyer, a worthless hack who somehow got credited amongst the greats that now gets to peddle his shit and call it art.

I also think Nojima’s writing isn’t that great. FF7 was designed to be fast paced so the good writing was more about how it was structured or moody

His sprite work in 6 was pretty awesome and I really love his more down to earth designs, like the cast of Parasite Eve.
Which begs the question why a fucking artist got to be in charge of the brand. Even the things he supposedly wasn't involved with absolutely reeks of him. I guess it's better than a marketing schmuck like the west usually does.

Since I just suggested it in another FF thread, and FFV is about to be re-released (presumably again without any of the GBA enhancements at all because Square is too stupid and/or lazy.) there's a rom hack for GBA FFV that is so is so much better than the original that it's the only way I'll ever replay FFV again.

Not only does it give you the advance-specific job classes from the same crystals you get the other jobs from much earlier, (and switch things around so that they're actually viable so early on) it also allows you to swap out the "fight" and "item" commands for any other commands that you want. This actually adds a lot more strategy to the game.

I looked at the FFIV remaster screenshots on steam and imo its kind of ugly. Its not god awful like the FFV and VI ports but ewww. Looks like the snes and psp version are still the best way to playFFIV.

Sorry if this is annoying but I'll repost from the other thread in case anyone can help me:

"Updated retroarch and booted up Final Fantasy Tactics: War Of The Lions. I'm trying to knock out the retroachievement set and this particular one has level and death restrictions. https://retroachievements.org/game/3236 if you're curious.

For anyone that's done challenge runs of this game what do you think is the best birthday setup for Ramza? Thinking of pisces because of the battle at the end of chapter 3. The de-level trap is allowed but that isn't for awhile in CH1 I think? I've never done a full minmax run so I don't quite understand how stat gains from certain classes work, I just know bard is suppose to be really good for Ramza to level down as."

I dunno. I always prefered Aquarius since it has best compatibility with Alma with good comp with Delita. Other than that, I just work around a party with good comps with eachother to avoid failing buffs and revives.

She also killed the president and everyone cheered. The game implies she mass brainwashed the public as she says this. Dunno why they didn't make this clear because apparently Squall and Irvine weren't washed?

The Sorceress assassination arc is the worst writing of the game. Every instance of that plot and the characters did was stupid and nonsensical. For example, like why didn't Quistis' team help fight Edea when they were RIGHT there at the gate but your party consists of Irvine and Rinoa who walked halfway across town through a panicking crowd and riot police to fight alongside Squall who drove there.

People like to dunk on the "everyone was from the same orphanage but we forgot" thing but at least it was just one massive stupid thing. The assassination attempt was dozens.

Final Fantasy Tactics *Advanced* came out on February 14 (Aquarius) in Japan, September 8 (Virgo) in North America, and October 24 (Scorpio) in the PAL region. If you're looking for a meta *worst* (i.e. most challenging) birthday for Ramza, I would say whichever one of those three is the closest to where you live.

I think Nomura is legitimately talented in the realm of character design and overall plot ideas. The problem I think few people understand is that while he can outline a legitimately good plot and say what he wants the beginning middle and end to be, he's not a writer. Somebody has to connect the dots, and that's Nojima.

Nojima has a rather....on and off track record of quality. I do think he's gotten better, especially with F7remake, but he likes to make things weird.

I think we can trace a lot of the early ridiculousness of the plots back to Nojima. There's a certain uniqueness I appreciate, in how batshit he can get, but he often sacrifices cohesiveness in favor of artistically odd plot choices. For example.

"Roxas being the nobody clone/body of sora who is absorbed into the original when he meets him again, and later fights him for control"

Interesting idea! but rather random and convoluted.

Overall I think its unfair to blame Nomura for the some of the writing choices. People should take more of an equal look at the writers and their track records.

(Interestingly enough while Nojima has done all the mainline KH games, I dont think he did a single portable one besides chain of memory's. So most of the crazier decisions are not even his fault. )
