Community Munchausen's by Internet (Malingerers, Munchies, Spoonies, etc) - Feigning Illnesses for Attention

I read an interesting paper a few weeks ago that said that the best evidence that something isnt psychological is recovery.

Do you have a link to that paper? I’d love to read it! I read the one you shared recently regarding victim mentality and found it really interesting.

Ill see if i can find it, but this seems to be an area of human behavior that is rarely studied or with courage. So while trying to understand it ive gone through lots of papers across several disciplines, and it only makes sense when the pieces are put together.

Ill see if i can dig one or two papers out tomorrow, but perhaps ill try to do a post that pulls it together in a bit more of a coherent way.

The absolute state of the world where this is only studied by academics with nothing to lose and then pulled together on sites like KF. Imo this area of research should be the foundation of any health policy even mildly concerned with preventing harm and promoting health.

But nah lets run an awarenss campaign.

There is also an interesting theroy that when someone has to fight to have their illness recognised, they can never recover. Because perhaps recovery means they give ground, lose the battle, no longer retain their place in the illness community, or that they think recovery will lead to everyone concluding it was psychological all along.
The thing is...there's a whole social media community about recovering from chronic illnesses too they could just slide into and be a part of. I have a patient in her early 20s with alcoholic neuropathy so bad she needs to use crutches to walk. Drunkorexia is a bitch. I spied on her IG once and she posts a bunch of uplifting content and has helped many other young women realize they need to stop with that shit because it can have real consequences. That's adding value to the world.

The problem is that they'd have to actually do things and couldn't hide behind their imagined illnesses anymore.

Public perception of illness is now formed by those most able to be heard and with least claim to the sick role. Society has been redesigned around the sickness activism of well people, and genuinely ill people are robbed of the vocabulary they need to get help, and then expected to get well after 6 sessions of CBT and yoga.

When youre least able to help yourself, you often now have to navigate the the world of wellbeing before arriving at the help you need.

People who dont want to be ill are seen as atypical and viewed with suspicion. I read a paper about that yesterday and will link it with the others tomorrow.

This is a bit off-topic, but lord knows plenty of those selfdx autism white 20-somethings women don't actually have it and just wanna feel special for the clout.

It's so popular to bang on the 'ABA is abuse' train, but none of these idiots have any nuance. Those who didn't get their childhood wasted by ineffective therapy should be able to explain the nuance without screaming like a bunch of... well.... retards. People who had it have a right to be mad, but the rest of em? Try being a proper advocate for these kids and stop REEEing for social clout.

I bring it up because these fakers really have killed the convo and are preventing anyone from taking the autists seriously.

Actual ABA simply sucks. It never evolved in 50 years and, since smacking and shocking speds isnt a good look, they cant even get any good results (by beating the shit out of the kid till they behave while the therapist is there).

What ABA has become is usually a shitty and cheaper version of better therapies because theirs suck. They steal from OT, PT, speech, child development fields, but do it worse. These watered down versions are given by those with less education for way less money. Then the so-called ABA therapist can hire even cheaper 'therapists' with almost zero education, screening, and pay to do the therapies they know nothing about. But insurance only covers ABA, so parents are fucked no matter what, and the kids get watered down shitty therapies.

But we get all these white undiagnosed 20 somethings screaming about ABA being abuse when they understand nothing about it. The conversation is dead on arrival and so getting kids actual therapies from qualified professionals falls to the wayside cause all anyone in any field hears is 'REEEEEEEE'.

I cant find the spoiler thing, but here's what ABA looks like. They sit your kid at a table. They get them to match objects or cards, and keep doing it till the kid magically gets it. They'll do the same with pecs till the kid magically learns to communicate. They mark down success and failure and pretend like this is 'objective data'. I say 'magically' because I've never seen a single kid gain any skill through DTT (discrete trial training is what they call this dumb shit) that the kid wouldnt gain otherwise.

And if you look at the data, its true. They can't prove the kids learn anything extra from ABA they don't learn otherwise. Whatever small improvements they show are small on equally small sample sizes. This is shitty science, but ABA relies on that to get insurance money.

The kids spend so much fucking time sitting at the table learning shit all that they lose out on speech therapy (shits expensive, just pretend ABA does it) and real life coping skills. ABA isnt needed to teach life skills and breaking down tasks into smaller parts isnt something it fucking invented.

That is what is done by schools by people with no ABA training at all. Most schools just hire paraprofessionals (who only require having a HS Diploma/GED) and teach them to do things then call it ABA.

As promised, i dug out two papers mentioned above to post today while i think about doing a longer post.

The end of professional dominance

Medicalization is one of those rare successful sociological terms that has entered the vocabulary of everyday life. Even doctors, who are allegedly its main beneficiaries use the word and sometimes even denounce the threat of" creeping medicalization." The growing usage of this sociological concept is underpinned by its resonance with contemporary cultural processes. Conditions such as cancer, obesity and AIDS along with such drugs as Viagra and Prozac have as many cultural meanings as they have medical connotations.

Since its emergence in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the thesis of medicalization has been a prism through which subsequent social developments have been viewed. There has been a steady expansion of medical boundaries and, increasingly, individual and social experiences are framed in medical terms as an illness or disorder. The promotion and celebration of health as the paramount value of Western society has encouraged people to interpret a variety of human activities through the vocabulary of medicine. Frequently, illness categories are used to make sense of routine problems of existence. Shyness, apprehension of failure, the inability to focus on tasks, promiscuity, and childlessness are just some of the problems that come with a medical diagnosis. Conditions that hitherto were confined to children, for example, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are now diagnosed in adults. Men are now claiming to suffer from illnesses that were until recently regarded as specifically women's conditions such as postnatal depression and menopause. The ever-widening definition of illness has been paralleled by the steady growth in expenditure on health.

Illnesses you have to fight to get: Facts as forces in uncertain, emergent illnesses

Chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivity are two clusters of illnesses that are pervaded by medical, social and political uncertainty. This article examines how facts are talked about and experienced in struggles over these emergent, contested illnesses in the US. Based principally on a large archive of internet newsgroup postings, and also on fieldwork and on published debates, it finds that (1) sufferers describe their experiences of being denied healthcare and legitimacy through bureaucratic categories of exclusion as dependent upon their lack of biological facts; (2) institutions manage these exclusions rhetorically through exploiting the open-endedness of science to deny efficacy to new facts; (3) collective patient action responds by archiving the systematic nature of these exclusions and developing counter-tactics. The result is the maintenance of these very expensive struggles for all involved.

While i was trying to find these i was thinking about how this thread goes through phases of focusing on individual munchies and then talking more generally about the phenomenon.

I know i took justified critisism when i talked about the reddit munchie subs last time, but i didnt have much fun there because they just focus on individuals.

We are often accused of being bullies, but im almost certain that the people that frequent this thread come here because theyve seen first hand the consequences of this behavior. Whereas reddit seems more populated by driveby drama mongers, and i wonder if that explains the differences.

Of course the no blogging rule means we dont explain why we come here. But i think its the no blogging rule, combined with KF being inhospitable to inauthenticity and displays of virtue, that naturally filters the types of people interested in bitchy and bullying behaviour.

So there feels like there is a lesson for society here somewhere.

I dont really understand a word she said. My take away is that if she doesnt die then this is all bullshit, because it appears she is describing having cancer which isnt going to be treated.

Or have they decided that the definition of cancer isnt inclusive enough and must become a spectrum?

From what it sounds like, you're right. She has a non-cancerous tumor that releases endocrines. When they occur outside the adrenal glands, they are simply called something else (paraganglioma). You can develop them in multiple places.

It sounds like it is very easy to observe what cell type they are. A doctor would likely biopsy one on the adrenal, then another random one, then simply monitor. Them growing in random places ain't a sign of em being cancer. It's like if you're prone to lipomas. The doc is gonna check the first one or two, then simply watch the others cause they're known to be benign and almost always stay that way.

She doesn't have cancer and isn't a 'super duper special complex case'.

Most offensive of all is the fact that the ineffectiveness of ABA and the sometimes downright abusive and coercive techniques used by its adherents isn't even really what the self-diagnosed "autism activist" crowd finds problematic. They think it's wrong to help autistic children find ways to cope with being part of a society that they don't understand and that doesn't understand them, because doing so requires some behavioral changes.

Helping an autistic kid to fit in better with his peers by learning to express emotions without stimming or melting down, or assisting an adult with mastering activities of daily living to grant him a measure of independence is totes genocide against autists, u guise. Fuck desperate parents who put their autistic kids in therapy because they're nonverbal and can't use the toilet without assistance; therapy is DeStRoYiNg AuTiStiC CuLtUrE!

None of these people ever consider anyone outside of themselves. It's interesting that almost all of the "autistic culture" proponents are relatively high functioning. Tell the kid rocking in in a corner and banging his head because everything in the world is Too Much, or the middle aged guy who has to move into a group home full of strangers because his elderly parents are too infirm to continue caring for him but he cannot live on his own. Explain the genocide being perpetuated against autists to a mother who is lying awake, straining to hear even the slightest noise that might indicate her autistic toddler is awake and trying to escape the house. Tell the elementary school kid who comes home in tears because he wants friends but doesn't understand why the other kids don't want to play with him.

ABA is trash, but these munchie autist LARPers can't even get their opposition to it right.

Any serious munchie with an ounce of lack of self respect would avoid red flag factitious presentations.

I read an interesting paper a few weeks ago that said that the best evidence that something isnt psychological is recovery.

Munchies et al think that the more they demand that they are actually disabled the more likely they will believed when they insist that there is a biological cause.

In fact lack of recovery, in the absense of objective evidence of abnormality, demonstrates strongly that it is all in their head.

There is also an interesting theroy that when someone has to fight to have their illness recognised, they can never recover. Because perhaps recovery means they give ground, lose the battle, no longer retain their place in the illness community, or that they think recovery will lead to everyone concluding it was psychological all along.

Their response to that of course would be that they must be able to be diagnosed earlier to avoid not recovering.

Which, if they were stupid enough to say out loud, is an admission that they werent or arent physically ill.
POTS (an actual diagnosis, that is) in particular is the easiest to overcome with hydrotherapy to help improve the heart's ability to regulate itself. The weightlessness and the ability for blood to circulate better improve symptoms since the water helps equalize the body, thus eliminating the postural part of POTS. Continued hydrotherapy shows promising results in day to day life because the cardio work in the water can be translated to a normalized workout routine.

However, relapse is easy if one isn't mindful of their cardiac health.

I agree with everything said. Munchies get a thrill from being seen as sick or having people pay attention to them differently so they'll milk anything they can for as long as they can.

victoria_2021_06_08.pngvictoria_2021_06_08b.pngvictoria_2021_06_08c.png

One of the things I've noticed with her writing (and with her youtube vlogs) is that it reminds me of a kid's school essay. It's like she failed to launch out of middle school. This extraordinarily boring video from 2018 about her POTS is a good example: "Hi, I'm Victoria! I have POTS! This is my saline! I will tell you how I got it in this video!"

Also in this video:
Victoria claims she has failed every POTS medication.
Victoria claims she first heard about it by overhearing two nurses talk about how she might have POTS when she went to the hospital for a medication reaction.
Her tilt table test was "super positive" because she fainted.
When she saw a POTS doctor, they redid the TTT and she passed out again so it was "extremely positive" again.
She claims her POTS is hyperadrenergic POTS.
She had to convince her doctor to try saline.

Mental illness, depression, whathaveyou, is a disease. It is terminal if left untreated. So much of this is just internalized selfhatred by the chronically depressed who are too ashamed of having a mental illness to admit it, so they fake something else.

Idk why that bitch had to fake illness when she clearly had an untreated one to begin with. These ppl preach mental health yet they trivialize their real mental health issues to LARP a physical problem. Because deep down, they are drinking the ableist koolaid of "mental health isn't real health", not treating the real problems they have, and making themselves worse in the process. Or just killing themselves because the real condition was the only one they didn't get treatment for.

So many of these ppl are very young, very stupid, and just need to get a smack of reality therapy. They get depressed, or they have bipolar and they are at an age at which psychological illness becomes more obvious as the brain matures. So many of them at their early 20s, with their personality or mood disorders are maturing. So they get sad.

sadness turns to laziness. They put off doing any real work bc they are depressed. This compounds the issue. they won't admit it's all in their head. So they dig themselves deeper and deeper, finding new exciting ways to fake sick, to not put in the real work or get the real treatment- because actual mental health treatment is hard. It's not easy. A big part of effective psychiatric treatment is being able to see that a lot of it is you. You are the problem. It hurts. But hurting is hard and self improvement is hard and mental health is for pussies anyways. so they fake POTS, get more sick, exacerbate their mental illness, all because the truth is more painful to face than any fake condition they have.

But nah, being mentally ill is for pussies, so they fake infections, they fake having EDS or a fuckin parasitic twin, all bc they are too ashamed to admit that going for so long with untreated mental health made them terminally lazy and unwilling to do the very hard work of climbing out of the hole they dug themselves deeper in.

Tl;dr-
Send munchies to talk therapy and give them a real talking to about their mental health and we might see positive improvement.

Spot on. Despite all their mental and physical health avocadoing, the only message they consistantly give is that mental illness is so offensive a label, and that its a personal failing rather than something that can be treated.

Another paper i came across that i found very interesting.

Healthcare Practice, Epistemic Injustice, and Naturalism

Ill persons suffer from a variety of epistemically-inflected harms and wrongs. Many of these are interpretable as specific forms of what we dub pathocentric epistemic injustices, these being ones that target and track ill persons. We sketch the general forms of pathocentric testimonial and hermeneutical injustice, each of which are pervasive within the experiences of ill persons during their encounters in healthcare contexts and the social world. What’s epistemically unjust might not be only agents, communities and institutions, but the theoretical conceptions of health that structure our responses to illness. Thus, we suggest that although such pathocentric epistemic injustices have a variety of interpersonal and structural causes, they are also sustained by a deeper naturalistic conception of the nature of illness.

What this describes, i think, is how those most in need suffer a series of injustices that progressivly make them invisible.

But the problem with research in this area is that there is a paradox whereby the existance of the injustice they describe makes the same research more ammunition for those benefiting from it.

So munchie types will use this research to gotcha society and use it as evidence of how they are ignored. Those actually on the receiving end of the injustice are unable to get anyones attention, and therefore those who are healthy use it to further cement their undeserved sick role at the expense of genuinely sick people.

Not sure if that all makes sense. In short, we should ignore anyone claiming injustice if they are able to catch the attention of progressive elite types.

Preach!

Even sometimes refuse to recognize one form of mental illness and try to exchange it for a sexier one.

Munch in my life refuses to recognize BPD. Has eaten themselves into extreme obesity and premature diabetes (all the rainbow of symptoms related) due to food addiction.

It isn't neuropathy, it's a mystery foot injury. The apnea isn't due to a 25 inch neck, it's genetics. The rashes aren't fungal, they are spider bites or definitely shingles this time. The obesity isn't overeating, it's the thyroid that's medicated and normalized.

Declares and self diagnoses bunch of things that aren't there. Ignores docs that say otherwise. Somehow they always want medical attention (fake service dog, med bracelet, constant trips to the ER for every fart, constant foul pictures of body parts), but just won't hear the actual source of the problem. Will dump docs that don't say the right thing, or just lie about what they say.

Just plain doesn't want any diagnosis that can be "fixed", especially via personal responsibility. Needs excuse to do nothing in life and play cursed with unstoppable disability.

Sorry for PL, but your post is so goddamned true from mega munchies online to the day to day facticious folks.

What i find unsettling is that there are a range of factors that lead doctors to enable them, and embed a sort of defensive practice wherby medicine begins to treat all patients as though they prefer validation over recovery.

The consequences for patients only interested in recovery cant be understated.

Really interesting. I want to know what her supposed symptoms of this are. Not gonna sperg, just quickly say I have close personal experience with it (read between the lines and make of that what you will).

There are not only very specific symptoms and ways of testing that go beyond just the tilt table test, but saline won’t help and should be avoided as it contains salt and anyone with this specific diagnosis should not be consuming any more salt than needed and the standard pots advice doesn’t apply to this subtype. That is a red flag.

Doesn’t adrenal gland cancer come from a carcinoma, not a pheo? Not a medkiwi; just a pro google-er 🤪View attachment 2670143View attachment 2670144
Pheochromocytoma can be malignant, but that is extremely rare. You're correct that most malignant adrenal gland tumors in adults are adrenocortical carcinoma, which is another extremely rare tumor, with <1 case per 1 million people diagnosed each year.

Incidentally, primary adrenal tumors are much more common in the pediatric population. Neuroblastoma, a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system, is the most common extracranial solid tumor of early childhood. Kids usually present with a large primary tumor in the abdomen, arising from the adrenal gland. It's a fascinating type of cancer from a research standpoint - infants can have widely disseminated disease, with mets to multiple distant sites including bones and bone marrow, but it usually resolves spontaneously without chemotherapy. In children who are older than 2 years or so at diagnosis, however, especially those whose tumor has "unfavorable" genetic and microscopic features, effective treatment options are few and survival rates are poor, with most kids succumbing to widespread refractory disease within 5 years of diagnosis. It is a brutal disease and the treatment, such as it is, includes high dose chemotherapy, radiation, and stem cell transplant. Kids who do survive frequently suffer from significant hearing loss, sterility, short stature, heart disease, learning disabilities, and secondary cancers, all related to the utterly barbaric standard treatment necessary to save their lives. Imagine the pain from a cancer arising from your nerves, and then imagine that you're 5 years old and don't understand why the doctors who are trying to help you are actually just making you feel worse. :( This is your routine reminder that fewer than four cents of every dollar designated for cancer research in the United States is used to benefit pediatric patients, and most cancer treatments for children are basically unchanged from the ones used in the 1970s.

Bitch should have said her parasitic twin had neuroblastoma and it resolved spontaneously.
