Worst Redesigns

Zantana's edgy 90s redesign makes me wonder how she moves in those pants. They look like they're about to fall off of her.

Who can forget the vanity project redesign of Dante (the one of the right) for DMC. Not only was Dante redesigned to look like one of the projects higher-ups, but you get "creative" uses of "fuck you" in what could best be described as a middle schooler's attempt at being edgy. (They even ripped off Futurama in one of the plotlines.)

So is this the thread where I get to complain about how we Japs redesign your simple but effective movie posters into the most overblown, crowded pieces of gutter trash which only appeal to an audience taught to appreciate films based on the actors involved or the awards it gathered, and not the actual story? 🤔

The redesigned enemies from Super Mario Sunshine. I guess they did it to fit with the whole tropical island theme, so tortoises became sea turtles, piranha plants are now covered in ink and wear swimming trunks (and have navels for some reason), boos got drunk, and so on. Pretty much every single one of these redesigns got discarded after this game, so I just have to wonder why they even bothered changing them in the first place.

The posters look more like bootleg DVD releases.

They went to shit when they stopped focusing on music. Now it's cheap shows (excluding Beavis and Butthead.)

Would this count?

Joan Crawford's publicity photo from 1949. (I believe it's for Daisy Kenyan.)

They airbrushed her freckles out. Not sure if it's her decision or marketing, but I don't like it. I think her freckles make her look more distinguished.

The 3rd generation of the Ford Transit Connect (also called the Ford Tourneo Connect in parts of Europe), already looks like a downgrade from the 2019 refresh on it, due to it being a rebadge of the Volkswagen Caddy:

Here is the 4th Generation Volkswagen Caddy, for comparison purposes:

The new version of the van includes plastic cladding on the wheel wells, which is a plague due to the crossover infestation in the current car market. The infotainment also appears to have the same capacitive touch controls that are on VW's newer cars, which have been shown as being a pain to use, as how the ID.4 proved. There is no indication of when the new van will be released for the US markets, or if it will even be sold in the US, although it could be likely built at either Ford's or VW's factories in either Mexico or the US, to not have to deal with the chicken tax deal with how the current Ford Transit Connect is assembled. How it works is the van is assembled in the passenger configuration in its home factory of Valencia, Spain, the vans are shipped to the US, where the back windows are replaced with coverings, and the passenger seats are removed. That was done originally to circumvent the chicken tax laws, but the US eventually ruled that Ford still needs to pay the chicken tax for doing this.

Another thread talking about shit remakes reminded me of how when I saw the designs for the "returning characters" in SSSS Dynazenon i just fucking thought they looked dull and generic in the same way a lot of the characters in pokemon sword and shield did to me, as do some of the dyynazenon designs I've seen but unlike the those ones, the ones I got real gripes with are redesigns of existing characters so it goes here.

No clue if these have been brought up in this thread before and I forgot but I'll just give one example that showcases what I'm talking about here.

So, around the mid-ish? point of SSSS gridman it gets revealed through a nuber of things that it's in fact a sequel to the original instead of a remake. one of the ways this happens is there's this small weird homeless looking child thats revealed to be the daughter of a fucking GIANT TURTLE and a fairy from the original gridman series. Yes, her mom was a fairy that fucked a giant turtle apperently and no i have no clue how that works. Anyways, her design gets across her whole deal well enough, mixing turtle-ish looking features in like mold/algae visibly on her green hoodie kinda like what you see on turtles. As insane as it is You can feasibly see how this kid could be the child of a big fucking turtle monster. It also helps that she's animated generally expressively despite being a somewhat chill character.

Dynazenon as far as I've seen of it removes basically all of this. Despite it apperently being a timeskip forward several years this shit is fucking inexcusable

Shit's legit that fucking "SOUL VS SOULLESS" situation, to the point where even the stock art for the character really showcases what I mean.

In terms of timeskip designs, they could have done literally anything else and it'd look better. it's like they went from actually thinking about the characters appearances and histories and then decided to suddenly instead do that thing media does where it shows logo of thing and you're supposed to go "OH THE THING! THE LOGO THING! A!! THE THING I CLAPPED I KNOW EVERYTHING NOW!" There were logo easter eggs in SSSS gridman but they weren't self referential or to tell who a character was, and more just cryptic or funny references to media like transformers. Not the first time trigger has done shit like that either I remember kill la kill literally had a character driving lockdown from transformers animated's car form at one point.

I don't think if anyone mentioned Polly Pocket dolls.
They are so cute, I wish I had one 90s set.

I had one early 2010s doll with synthetic hair. She didn't have flexible joints but was really pretty. I miss these models.

Awful plastic static hair, ugly faces. Makes me genuinely sad.

I think that late 2000s/early 2010s models with synthetic hair were the best.

It also had a few cartoon shorts made. Lila Draper was my favourite. She has purple eyes and brown hair.

I'll take my puzzle pieces, but this is really sad to see your childhood toys being massacred in designs (:_(
