Euthanasia should be avaiable to any senior who wants it and is compos mentis.
Fuck shitting yourself in a nappy on valium for a decade. Why have they got to starve to death if they want to die? Why can't we give them a nice fat shot of fentanyl and go bye bye. That's the way I want to go out.

That's exactly the current problem:

If you have a diagnosis of early dementia, you're not eligible for medical aid in dying because it's early dementia and not end-stage.
If you wait until you have have late dementia, you're no longer compos mentis, and thus cannot receive medical aid in dying.

This would require a lot of legal debate and lobbying to fix, and the people who are dealing with a quiet personal tragedy are not best-equipped to do it. Any time people talk about MAID, they get irate young spoonies and misinformed religious people rallying against it. Better as a politician just not to touch it; it's not like the soon-to-be-dead are a big voting bloc.

Are there even any known case studies of someone managing to do it when they aren't remotely close to death?

There is the practise of Sallekhana in Jianism, which depending on the source is practiced to finality by anywhere from 30 to 200 adherents a year. But they tend to ween themselves down over a period of a decade before death sets in, and it's considered a deeply spiritual practice meant to be the final seperation of one's soul from the excesses of the material world.

Farms is being extremely homosexual for me right now so I can’t reply and might be late but there was a trans chick who called herself Emet (lgbtqadvocate on Instagram) and was friends with Julian (Chronically Jaquie’s former friend), huge munchie, LARPed every conceivable identity, finally decided to starve herself to death in a hospice in Philadelphia. they tried to kick her out for not being dead after two months because she continued to drink water, so she stopped that too until they let her stay. I think she did eventually start drinking again once they capitulated but did in fact succeed in dying a few months later and documented it all. In the meantime she mused about how she bought herself toys like hoists and trialed a ridiculously expensive standing frame she didn’t need and came so so close to admitting there was nothing wrong with her except severe mental illness.

Her stories are worth a read. She was very open about how she did this all on purpose because she was batshit and traumatized by her parents dying or abandoning her or something.

IMO it's good to have this information and these advocates out there, but it sucks that the laws don't allow the choice of medical aid in dying for people with a dementia diagnosis. It seems like it's mostly people consciously facing dementia, with some older people who see VSED as "suicide lite;" they wouldn't kill themselves and probably wouldn't go for MAID, but just stopping eating is acceptable to their morals.

(It's interesting that an end-stage dementia patient (or other terminal illness) do slowly drift away from eating and drinking at the end. Someone who's 83 and cognitive but also just kinda tired and done with living now; is that VSED when they stop eating? Or is that just the same instinct as the terminal cancer patient, it's just that there's no one single cause to point at? The whole thing is sad and fascinating and I wish we did better by our elders.)

I either initially didn’t take much notice of her age or simply forgot about it but it causes me to see her case in a different light. She’s a good 94 though, damn, I hope I have half as much of spark at her age.

I couldn’t agree more on needing to do better by our elders, I’m not in the US but our laws surrounding the issue also need a massive reworking. It’s terribly sad that some patients with dementia and similar illnesses don’t have much of an option except to go down the path of VSED, to die slowly and painfully in comparison to other available options while their relatives watch on. If they purposely choose it over MAID, more power to them, but the ones who don’t really have any other choice…

Meanwhile, we have some young girl who could most likely live a decent life with treatment and no loss of dignity using the same very method often used out of sheer desperation by our poor elders. I’ll take my hats.

That’s the one. She was definitely archived in the thread at one point, but she also wrote blogs about it and had everyone who would give her the time of day share her posts so as many people as possible could watch her die.

Calm the shit down newfags, her name is Kiley Prososki and I did five posts on this crazy bitch. She claims her mother poisoned her with arsenic when really she’s just anorexic and BPD. She’s also been super fucking abusive to several “service dogs” And led to the death of at least two of them. Search is not working for me right now but this was in February of this year and she dominated the thread for about a month because of how insane she is.

OP Had her friended before I ever posted about her. A random Reddit post of hers got posted to this thread by someone who asked me to look into her. After I posted, OP made an account and fact checked a lot of my information because they had access to accounts and groups I was not able to access. Including leaking her fucking medical documents so we could actually see the blood test results that she had been talking about. They also filled in an entire period of her life where she was not posting publicly on any social media by giving me the name of the person she was living with at the time who documented it on her behalf, and providing stories from him about what she was like. The “birthday meltdown” During which OP was removed from all of these groups was also before I posted. She has a public account where she friends thousands of people, as she fancies herself an Internet celebrity activist for adult victims of Munchausen by Proxy and a famous model. From there it was not difficult to get access to her private accounts as long as you kissed her ass, which was as easy as liking a few posts. She was so desperate to convince herself and others that her mother poisoned her that she took a thumbs up or a heart emote as proof you were one of her true believers.

This poster is legit and was very helpful but not everyone has time to keep up with internet drama. Like you know, maybe reading the fucking thread to see the very extensive documentation I did on this woman less than a year ago.

There are people with chronic pain who sometimes can't even walk or drive because of pain that don't use wheelchairs because they already have muscle atrophy from reduced activity and they know wheelchairs are a death knell for their bodies. Once you start depending on a chair you go downhill because even walking a few steps around the house on your own is beneficial.

In my experience people with genuine pain disorders want to avoid wheelchairs as much as possible, not get special hot pink barbie wheels with zebra print seats.

I’ve noticed this too. I have a family member with chronic pain and mobility issues, she will suck it up and use a walker vs the wheelchair because sitting too long will make it so much more difficult to move in the long run.

I feel so bad for anyone who has to be a literal prisoner in their body like that.
