St. Marinos was a woman who lived as a man in order to keep her post. In this podcast, these queer activists say it's 'dishonoring his memory', because women who cross dressed or did gender non conforming things were actually men.

They had to get a trans specialist to make sure they didn't use any no-no language:

And St. Marinos’ skin is always depicted...I mean mostly depicted as male skin and his chest when he bears it is a male chest. Again, whatever male chests look like, you know, it's a very complex issue.

More exceptional takes:

Alyssa: Society still conditions most of us to see gender in binary terms and assign specific traits to specific genders, for example, breasts and vaginas for women and a penis and facial hair for men. This is of course a gross oversimplification and erases so many people who exist beyond these socially constructed categories. Modern scholars are just as susceptible to these limiting assumptions, assumptions which can then erase the diversity of sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression that exists in historical sources.

Jonah: And rather than saying, oh, that, you know, that's not a woman ergo, that is a man; it's more interesting to see her maybe as a historical antecedent for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome, you know, where, because of the different hormonal interactions in your body, people assigned female at birth, people who have ovaries, do grow facial hair and can actually sport quite impressive beards. Some women have beards. And I feel that that's kind of the same point with Wilgefortis, right? Rather than saying, this is the person with a beard or ergo they're male, even though cool, they were assigned female at birth, then they're trans male. Rather than doing that, it's actually more interesting and more nuanced to say, no, this might be a woman with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Alyssa: Saint Marinos’ wiki page...which uses a female name as its title but can be found by Googling “Marinos”...is the same. In fact, it describes Marinos exclusively as a woman who actively hid her sex and uses female pronouns. My co-producer Hannah actually tried to fix the entry while working on this episode but ran into a problem along the way.
Hannah: I’ve made a few Wiki edits before...nothing major. Having listened to Jonah’s interview and holding a Master’s in Medieval Studies myself, I felt qualified to fix the Marinos entry. There were a lot of pronouns overall, so I removed some and changed the rest to he. I updated info that said Marinos was born a woman to “assigned female at birth.” Things like that. But when I went to check on the entry later, I saw all my changes were reversed, and I had a notification that one of my recent edits, quote “ did not appear constructive and has been reverted.” I visited the user profile of the individual who made that call, where you can see their political beliefs and other info. This user was a straight male in his 20s from South Carolina who has marked himself as anti-abortion, pro-Trump, anti-animal rights, against Climate Change science, in opposition to Barrack Obama, and who quote “does not subscribe to the modern definition of ‘tolerance’ whereby vicious and false attacks on Christianity are tolerated.” So I can’t imagine why he didn’t approve my edits.

Amy: So I think the most important thing is to identify the language that is used or the, the signifiers that are used within the culture itself. You can't go in going, I'm going to look for a transgender person. You have to go in open to, this is how cis-heteronormative, cis-heteronormativity worked in this society. So how do we find people that deviate from that norm and what is deviation from that norm and what language is used around that? And I think that's the easiest way to do it. You can't read it, go, I'm going to look for a lesbian or a bisexual person or anything like that because that's just not true to those identities. Those identities didn't exist in that way in the past.

Jonah admits it's done out of 'his' own bias:

Jonah: There is that instant recognition that you have when this is your lived experience. And then when you see someone transitioning in the past or when you see someone, having the same desires and the same identity as you do, you understand them, and it's, it's the same kind of thing that disabled scholars do. So I feel like centring queer voices in terms of academia definitely will yield a better and probably even more nuanced kind of history of queer characters. More nuanced because we are well aware that our identity is kind of a-historical while, you know, a straight cis middle-class male historian might not necessarily challenge the way he receives the information and the way he puts information forward and the way that his identity is kind of.

Amy: And the debate was whether to change to self-identification. So where people go, “This is my gender now,” and the government goes “cool,” which is what it needs to be. It doesn't need to be that big a deal. Unfortunately, it started being picked up a lot more by trans exclusionary radical feminists. So people who consider themselves to be feminist, but believe in biological essentialism. So if you're born with a vagina, you are a woman and there is nothing you can do to change that, which as we can see from these past stories simply isn't true. And then they picked up on this idea of trans women being in women-only spaces and how this was an awful thing because trans women are going to use this to attack women, attack these women and be violent towards these women, which absolutely is not true. Trans women are the most likely to be facing abuse in all our communities. Not only that, but this strange idea that men are going to use this as an excuse, a way to legally get into women's spaces to do illegal acts is just so nonsensical to me that there's no logic behind that thought process. And that was really the trigger for this awful transphobia in the last few years was just this kind of rising hatred against trans women in women-only spaces.

That article on "fatphobia" is making me MATI. There's so much misinformation in there about weight loss, and misinformation about weight loss in general.

One tranny worked out for twenty hours a week, was told to drop ten kilos in a month by another doctor - allegedly. If that happened that is genuinely uncool. Twenty hours a week of exercise and ten kilos in a month of weight loss is extreme and dangerous for everyone but hard-core athletes used to that kind of training schedule. It's also a good way to insure the weight cones back, because twenty hours a week of exercise is unsustainable and weight loss has to be maintained for life.

They claim Bmi is useless for determining health. No one uses it to determine health, they use it to determine increased health risks. For 99% of people the Bmi is an accurate way of measuring health risks.

They talk about disabled people who "can't exercise". Like one person with back problems who can't get surgery unless they lose weight, and surprise now they have arthritis and sciatica (both frequently caused by excess weight) and still can't lose weight.

No one, unless you do like that one tranny and work out for hours a day, loses weight by exercising. There's a truism in the weight loss community: weight loss happens in the kitchen, health happenS in the gym. Cardio really doesn’t burn that many calories, and it burns fewer the longer you do it. Eat less. That's all you have to do to lose weight.

You don't even have to watch what you eat! One dude lost weight eating nothing but Twinkies. His cholesterol and blood pressure came down too, so his health improved. (He did take vitamins)

I lost that 100 pounds with no exercise and eating virtually nothing but pizza and cheetos and fast food. Just a LOT less.

These fuckers are just lazy. Weight loss is SIMPLE, but it's not easy. Fat phobia doesn’t exist. Put down the fork fatties.
