I actually love the film grain to death in Mass Effect. I would never say that about any other game, but it fits perfectly with that 80's vibe like you said. There was also this horribly inaccurate lens flare effect that I liked and I can't exactly place why. It just felt very space-y. Also the camera work seemed to be genuinely more interesting in Mass Effect 1 than the others in my opinion. It tended to be very close to the action/Shepard at all times and only panned out when it really needed to. You can see this very well in the intro.Kinda agree on Mass Effect 1 looking more visually interesting. One of the things I loved about the visuals was the film grain. It gave the game a very retro and nostalgic vibe. Like I was watching an old sci-fi movie from the 80's.
It's a shame that effect was a lot more subdued in 2 and straight up abandoned in 3.
