Shit that you overheard during Thanksgiving (2021)

People really overplay it when they complain online, but one thing I've noticed being around overseas families is that talking about politics is like talking about your bowel movements, in that even around family it's inappropriate. Like people will apologize if they even bring up the topic of voting. It's very different from the US where people put signs in their yard and bumpersticks on their cars.
It wasn’t always that way in the US. There was a time way back when it was considered tres gauche to bring up politics or religion in social settings. I don’t know when it changed for the rest of the country but in my little part of it “No Politics&No Religion” was a barroom rule even as recently as the late 2Ks. These days, of course, it’s inescapable. Happy fucking Holidays.

Thanksgiving is a dead holiday with my family, nothing much going at all.
Same here. Lost half the family members to the politics of the last 5 years so no more big family events. Visiting my parents today and we’ll sit down for dinner but it’s not like a big deal or anything.

I'm currently in the kitchen cooking with my family while the Macy's Parade plays on the tv, my dog sleeps in front of the fireplace, and my elderly aunt and uncle argue in the living room over whether they've been married for 56 or 57 years. It's extremely comfy and I am thankful and I have no complaints. :)

I'm thankful for being an American because I get to have an entire holiday dedicated to eating delicious food while Europoors cope, seethe, and dilate about it.

Every year, my dad hopes another balloon will be destroyed during the Macy's parade like the Barney one was back in '97.
wow, so you guys have a single day where you eat something good and don't consume mcdonalds, kfc or burger king, I'm impressed

Stop supporting Big Turkey and buy a damn overpriced goose. You are saving the environment or some shit, truuuuust me!
Lost half the family to politics over the past few years so there just aren’t enough of us around the table for it anymore. The grocery store had only one in the case a couple of days ago and it was just too big for 3-4 people, plus $60 is a lot of money. That goose was $40 a couple of years back and you had your choice of large or smaller ones.

I don't really talk to my family any more for a variety of reasons so normally I'll celebrate thanksgiving with my girlfriends' families but I'm single now. Thankfully my best friend at work who's a radiologist invited me to eat with his family so I'll be doing that and watching football and maybe getting a little drunk.

My grandparents were poor and lived in a trailer. My grandmother as a result made almost everything from scratch including her bread for stuffing, sticky buns and dinner rolls. As a teen I thought it was sad because she couldn't afford anything better. My grandfather flew in WWII and grew up in the Midwest. He was casually racist and would get us in trouble by calling things racist nicknames like when he'd call sunflowers "Niggerheads". He also did this hilarious thing where he'd point with his middle finger. I miss them a lot and didn't realize how great they were until they passed away.
