It wasn’t always that way in the US. There was a time way back when it was considered tres gauche to bring up politics or religion in social settings. I don’t know when it changed for the rest of the country but in my little part of it “No Politics&No Religion” was a barroom rule even as recently as the late 2Ks. These days, of course, it’s inescapable. Happy fucking Holidays.People really overplay it when they complain online, but one thing I've noticed being around overseas families is that talking about politics is like talking about your bowel movements, in that even around family it's inappropriate. Like people will apologize if they even bring up the topic of voting. It's very different from the US where people put signs in their yard and bumpersticks on their cars.
