Pixiv artists have a related Mastodon instance called Pawoo, I'm sure if things go as bad as we'd expect. A lot will just create a user on that platform. Which is great if you're on the Fediverse.

Holy shit, did you guys ever hear about how ASSMAD the Fediverse SJWs were when Pixiv made Pawoo? It was glorious.

I'm half remembering this stuff, but it went something like this. Pixiv is a Japanese art site, very very similar to Deviantart -- except it's used by everyone including professional artists and manga / anime teams. Japan doesn't give a shit about Loli or Shota (that's "cartoon child porn" for non-weebs, although it's more complex than that), and Japanese Internet Artists sure as SHIT don't give a shit about loli or shota. So when they decided to make a Twitter alternative (due to Twitter SJWs starting to target Japanese artists and get them banned) that would follow Japanese culture and laws (read: no banning them for posting art California hipsters might be offended by or yell at them for drawing some tanned girl the wrong shade of negro-brown) they went with Mastodon and Fediversed it up.

Pawoo instantly became the largest Fediverse instance by a LARGE margin. And INSTANTLY the SJWs that felt they controlled the network lost their goddamned fucking minds, becuase Japan does.not.give.a.fuck about stupid white bitch problems, which means when some troon on some other fediverse instance demands Pixiv ban someone or ban a topic wholesale... Pixiv just ignores the idiot. We should all be so lucky as to have admins that just ignore the idiots.

I still think the reaction to Gab was bigger -- there were no proud crowing of dickheads about how they were editing their Fediverse apps to not allow connections to Gab's server -- but still, for the time it was hilarious to see.

The issue with Pawoo and a lot of other East Asian instances is the fact that they detest westerners and refuse to admit anyone to their instances that speak English (and rightfully so, since American users on Twitter love to lecture Japanese artists about problematic character design but I digress). Decentralized art communities are bit of a double-edged sword because while gatekeeping is effective and largely a force for good, it also acts as a deterrent from new users joining said instance and helping it grow.

As it stands, Fedi and especially Mastodon isn't a great place for artists looking to score commissions, and a low userbase is only secondary to the real issue that a lot of the communities on Mastodon are just as censorious and gatekeepy as Twitter mods. There just isn't a satisfying answer to the problem at hand yet, but what might get the ball rolling is if more users disenfranchised by Twitter's policies get fed up with it and see a reason to try alternative platforms.

In a decentralized internet I think any place has a right to moderate (or "censor" if you prefer that word in this context) itself as it sees fit. It would only become a problem if they had control over the entire protocol itself, and the whole design of it is to prevent a single group from gaining that power. They can go huddle in their safe spaces for all I care, as long as more free speech instances still exist, it's fine, I wouldn't WANT those types on a free internet anyway.

Because if they ban those pesky "undesirables" then:
a) they will have to find a new place (maybe even fedaverse?) which is great since it stops the information monopoly

I stopped really using Mastodon after 6 months because most of the art instances I wanted to follow had dumb shit like 'LGBTQ+/BIPOC-friendly' on their instance headers, which in of itself is a tacit admission that no one to the right of Che is welcome there. Sure, you got places like Poast and Shitposter.club that hold up free speech and irreverent humor in a way most websites don't anymore, but if the alternative to commie troon hugboxes are lolicons LARPing as trads and screaming 24/7 about white genocide, it's not gonna convince any normie disillusioned by Twitter to even dip in their toes.

Fedi needs to have a larger pool of instances catered to general interests that won't immediately be co-opted by politispergs, and unfortunately the only way I see that happening is if Twitter shoots themselves in the foot.

The Kiwi Farms fediverse instance blocks pawoo from the known network timeline and automatically marks all images from it as sensitive, though it doesn’t outright defederate pawoo. I think pawoo might be the instance with the fucking “cofe bot” that autoposts anime pictures involving coffee, including ones depicting a prepubescent child’s undergarments being used as a coffee filter.
