Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

I doubt that. The Wii is a great example. It's popularity was meant to drive a new wave of hardcore gamers, but in practice they stuck to playing wagglefest shovelware, and publishers were more than happen than to churn that stuff out. More hardcore or gateway games failed, or at least were mediocre. To use your river theory, they sat in the centre of the main river until they washed out to sea.
Actually, the Wii did bring in a certain amount of players into the core audience, mostly by accident. Yes, the supposedly "hardcore" games in the platform failed hard, but a lot of people who normally wouldn't give videogames the time of day were introduced to consoles via the Wii, and then moved on to other platforms, or stuck with Nintendo until the Switch was released.

A few months before the Switch came out, one of my colleagues at work gave his recently widowed mom a Wii U, and the old lady was hooked. Once she got her hands on a Switch, she was so completely addicted to Breath of the Wild that my colleague had to call her to make sure she was okay. And this isn't the only story in that vein I've seen these past few years (although it is the most extreme). Not all casuals turn hardcore, but even in a setting geared completely for casual play some people will always look for more.

Looking forward to hearing about how the brave and stunning non-binary Jim Sterling was harrassed by one of the many roving norf fc lynch mobs.

Unless Jim got a legal sex/gender change, I predict it starts before even landing in the U.K., specifically when boarding the plane, something about being patted down and/or disrahspakted.

It may not even be legal for a woman to pat him down (And by extension to effectively consider him a woman) depending on U.K.- and U.S.A.-ian law, I'm pretty sure that in my country it isn't to pat down the opposite sex.

My bets are on someone asking him to not openly wear fetish gear while in the airport/on the plane.

A.K.A. a crime against humanity greater than the Holocaust, Soviet purges, and Mao's Revolution combined.

Is there no end to the indignities trannies suffer in Bongland?
I still don't know why Britain gets called TERF island, this country bends over backwards to appease those retards, it's literally illegal to insult them online. Our stupid courts even legalised hormone blockers for kids.

It's because someone from the UK said something mean to Jim online. Also the BBC saying that it's wrong for trannies to coerce lesboans into having sex with them.....

Now, The US, especially the deep south (where he is) is, and always has been super friendly to trannies.

The sycophantic fart-huffing in the comments makes me want to eat a bullet:

"Oh I can understand the small-brained plebeian masses not wanting to hear about horrible bad things and just wanting to consume media uncritically, but thank God we enlightened few are still here speaking truth to power."

No you self-righteous faggot, when I read a game review I just want to know if the game is good and if it works. That's it. If I want to know about Bobby Kotick fisting an intern to death then I'll read one of the DOZENS of news articles about the subject that continue to get published (you know, the ones Jim constantly screenshots for his videos because he's too lazy to do any investigative work himself).

This complete inability to not inject your pet crusade into every single facet of your life is why everyone fucking hates you.
forgive the late, and possibly irrelevant question, but what is the deal with "critical consumption of media"?
I used to see former friends of mine implying stuff like "bigots" being unable to engage with fiction beyond a basic level.

I think the gist is something like "if you're not reading my ideology into every piece of media you consume, you're an idiot, philistine, and probably a Nazi."

Remember, these people spend every waking moment of their lives thinking about their politics. It's a sin to ever just enjoy something for what it is.

He's not even claiming to be a full fledged woman, but a non binary, and while a few countries have caved to pressure from woke activists to add an "X" option for passports, I doubt Jim has even gone that far (and depending if he has US or UK citizenship, or both, I'm not sure if it's even a possibility for him). So it's likely that security officers are just going to see an obese man in a wig and treat him accordingly.

It does raise the question though of how people claiming to be neither male nor female are treated in situations that for normal people would be less awkward if around someone of the same sex, such as getting a pat-down at the airport, or the sort of medical exam that requires poking and prodding in embarrassing places. Like if there's some law around it, do they still go off of biology? Because there's also been some uproar over male cops trooning out and because they're considered female they can do a cavity search on a female suspect who's not allowed to say "no" to having a man's hand in her intimate areas so long as he identifies as trans, so I don't imagine the rules around "enbies" would be simple, particularly not if activists get their way.

Because the rozzers aren't rounding up everyone who's had even a slightly transphobic thought and throwing them in prison its effectively state mandated transphobia to them, the doublethink going on in this country is insane.

Because a couple of article headlines said so. That apperently means that TERF hooligans are waiting at every corner of London ready to stab Jimbo right at his girl dick, at least according to Jimbo himself.

As far as I am concerned most "enbies" are crosdressers with extra steps, unless they are natural hermaphrodites or have simmilar medical conditions they never had control over, in which case their sex can be up for debate.
That said, there is quite an opening for spergs and sex pests who are allowed to run amok, which I think is an issue.
Knowing Jimbo, him turning enbie is more likely the result of his spergery more than anything. Spergs might be safer than sex pest, but they also might poses overbloated egos fueld by god complex. We can at least be glad no one in the industry actually listens to Jim.

It's been a while, but from I remember it's the school of thought that says everything is political so you can't just enjoy a piece of fiction without dissecting it and (conveniently) finding the ideological message you were specifically looking for.

It's basically just a way for pompous midwits to pretend they're smarter than they are by writing post-modernist essays on how Tetris is really an allegory for the trans struggle to 'fit in'.

Oh, hey. Haven't seen anything from Applebrain since he had that falling out with Sarkeesian a few years ago. I wonder what that soy-blooded failure of a man is up to.

Anyway, I love replying to the "everything is political!" crowd with this one:

Nothing like replying to a hack with another hack. Puts them in a real tizzy.

I'm sure it's a contentious opinion, but I actually don't disagree with these assholes on the fundamental idea that fiction is ideological by nature.

The thing that separates a story from a sequence of events is that a story always has a pre-defined ending which it leads towards. If something points towards a conclusion, then yeah, it has a purpose and you can read as much as you want into it.
These people are still exceptional though because they always fall back on reading everything through the lens of hot button politics or whatever topic VICE wants to write an article on that week. The more abstract a "story" like Tetris is, the harder it is to attribute something as specific as modern troonery to it. Sometimes an ideology can be as simple as "shooting monsters is good" without being an allegory for Marxism, immigrants or SRS.
When people say they don't want entertainment to be political, what they mean is they don't want overt soapbox grandstanding of the same homogenous views over and over when they buy a game to relax killing things (almost as if all these overt political games are made by the same homogenous group of people).

The account's been deleted now, but a while back there was a twitter ho who insisted that Link was non-binary because Aonuma said in an interview that he was designed to be androgynous. Then people replied showing quotes from the same articles where Aonuma also says that Link is definitely male (and that they just avoided making him overly masculine so that girls would want to play him too), and immediately got blocked with "sorry sweaty i said link is nonbinary so i can think whatever i want" before the stunning and brave tweet got deleted. Obviously they only pay attention to the creator's vision when it supports what they want and openly ignore anything contrary. And they have no problem turning the table, either, when someone shares a take they disagree with.

Oooh... that has got to hurt Jim's ego. Look at this,

I was legit blown away when I checked McIntosh's channel. I hadn't dropped in since he split with Anita years ago, and here he is getting a million-plus views on his videos. I'm almost tempted to check one out...can't be any worse than Jim's content or the shit he did on Feminist Frequency (which still has shit numbers btw lol).

There is without a doubt a lot of fiction that has ideological underpinnings or motivations, and it's often easy to tell with certain authors what their politics are even if they aren't overt about it in their writing (latter-day Stephen King is particularly bad for this) but this insistence that every single story has to have a deeper meaning only the smartest of Redditors can divine always makes me think of this:

It's fun to discuss these things casually, but the people who screech the loudest about it seem to approach it the same way Race Realists approach genetics: They already have a foregone conclusion in mind and don't care about the subject matter; it's just a means to an end to push their ideology or show off how smart they think they are.

Jim himself is really bad for doing this, although rather than works of fiction it's the system of Capitalism he likes to attribute a bunch of [citation needed] shit to.

Yeah, it's kinda baffling. I was watching Noah Caldwell-Gervais, an obvious lefty that still makes decent videos, reviewing all RE games and I found it outright alien for him to argue, that RE5 was racist because it depicted a white guy (that has a black female partner)gunning down blacks, same with the depiction of african tribesmen, while in reality, the devs just thought: " there's lots of black people in africa, so we have among others black-skinned enemies." same with the inclusion of tribal enemies because there are lots of distinct tribes in africa and it would be a nice design piece for the game.

What should the game devs have done to please his larp-standards? Make Chris unable to shoot dark-skinnes people? Only let the lightskinned people mutate into enemies?

Fuck these people.
