Plagued Consoomers / Consoomer Culture - Because if it has a recogniseable brand on it, I’d buy it!

Wouldn't Daria's character have a shit fit over mech like that if she saw it?

Technically yes, but Daria's own antisocial/holier-than-thou tendencies were (somewhat) deconstructed in the show itself come Seasons 4 and 5. My only complaint is that Daria's face was literally the only thing on it. Fucking hell man, I wanna wear a shirt that has Jane's paintings on it. That would be worth consooming.

Those would make better merch, even if nobody would know what it is from.

Does he get competitive, sure. But he's laid back and does it for the fun and its a fulfilling hobby to him.
I wouldn't say thats a consoomer, rather someone who has turned his passion into a business and a career.
I'm perfectly fine with that.

I mean, that's fine. He turned something he liked into a career. There's youtubers and twitch streamers that have done the same and that'll probably continue forward. But the topic here really isn't focused on people like them. It's the hoarders, the consoomers, the instant-buy happiness seekers.

These types of people but unironically.

You can bring up examples of people you like who you personally don't believe is a consoomer... but in that case, who cares? We're mostly here to be horrified or laugh at those who do Consoom like good little paypigs (Especially the Disney and Funko Pop ones) and who clearly sperg out when criticized for their habits.

A reasonable person enjoying a product in moderation? Whatever. An E-Thot dropping $3,000 on a neon anime sign and then crying in her next tiktok about people being mean by saying she should consider saving her money? Hilarious. 10/10 would watch again.

Now what about pro gamers or pro sim racers?
Isn't that tying your entire self worth on playing vidya?

I'm fine with them, I don't get why people sperg about pro gamers yet don't bat an eye when it comes to non league footballers who aren't pros but do it for the love of it.

Non league football is wasting away kicking futbol when you could have a "real job"

Sim racing wise, a ton of sim racers are moving into real racing and actually win stuff.
James Baldwin is killing it in British GT.

By all means, you can dislike pro gaming. Its a niche thing. I'm only interested in sim racing.
But if someone is doing it for their job and genuinely enjoy what they do while not completely shutting off from the world I'm ok with it.

Is this why everyone calls me bland? Because I keep my excessive video game collection neatly in a cabinet in the corner and my entire being isn't splashed with vidya references and memes?
I get strange looks sometimes when people realize I always seem to be wearing "plain" shirts that don't have corporate logos, pithy slogans, basic-bitch "shock" messages, pop-culture images, etc. Instead, I just wear solid colors or patterns. It's fucking weird that people consider that "bland" now simply because I'm not a walking billboard.

Reminds me of this comic that got passed around for a while:

How do you know they're giving you strange looks because you wear "solid colors"? I would be very surprised if that's true. Gonna make a guess that you just look like a weird creeep (aka typical Kiwi) for other reasons.
Because these aren't strangers, they're colleagues and friends who follow up those strange looks with direct questions once it dawns on them that I never advertise name brands on my clothes.

I'm sure the NIGGER tattoo across my forehead and the third arm have nothing to do with anything.

Yea, this is something I really don't want to put on my wish list myself. As I know the gift givers is people that have a hard time using computers, and practically only can buy stuff in irl stores. The problem with that, they don't have anything of what I want. Which is the reason for why I almost always send my money out of the country.

At the same time, owners of shops in my country whines about people people buying stuff for less online and out of country. Well, no shit. Time moves on and the public are catching on you scamming them.
I'm actually going to be getting a few of the things and I'm extremely thankful.

Speaking of prices being less elsewhere, I was in a used game store a while ago and the person had like 3 beat up copies of majora's mask they were charging $89 each for. I got that game YEARS ago used for $30 back when the gamecube was a thing but from what I've seen the game never really went up in price used till maybe now? Every store I've seen it in till now it's been $30 or $40 used but ebay scalpers have charged some WILD ass prices for the games but it's been inconsistent. I only pulled the old "used" price tag off mine a year or 2 ago for reasons I can't remember and I now regret it because I'd have a solid proof for people ranting about how scalper prices for used first party nintendo vidya are totally fair because "RARE VINTAGE RETRO GAME!!!" these past 2 years are full of shit.

"Workers of the world Unite..unless it delays my movies and tendies"
Granted marvel(Disney) as well as a few other media companies have been literally taking every excuse to delay shit since corona hit. If it's a strike causing a delay it's not the same thing but it's another reason for them to go and claim something can't be released yet. Remember how fucking Black widow kept getting delayed despite being finished before eventually getting dumped on disney plus and being a mediocre ass marvel movie after allt he hype around the delays? Remember how The last of us 2 kept getting delayed and the whole fucking finished game leaked online months before release? I can see why and how people would be starting to get fucking fed up with this shit, but yeah it's dumb to solely focus on the marvel movies here in terms of news of media industry strikes. Big companies have been delaying shit for dumbass reasons. halted production due to a strike actually makes more sense than "uhh well pandemic despite the media being digital and everyone working from home uhhh nope can't release it, sorry!"

I think you're getting confused on what a consoomer actually is because I don't think any you've mentioned fit, so of course most people would consider them fine. Consoomerism is linked with mass overconsumption where it is either getting into or already into hoarding territories. You're looking at massive collections of things with not much thought put into curation (which is something you need with large collections along with nice was of displaying it) and lots of buying for the sake of buying. A pro gamer would be a consoomer if he decked out his entire 'gaming room' with razer merch to show off or boasted about his g-fuel collection. Someone being very good at something like gaming and taking it to the professional level is not consoomerist in itself.

I think for some people it makes it easier for them to get a 'feel' for a person depending on what kind of clothes they wear, makes it easy to strike up a conversation or realize someone has a shared interest. Can't say the same for brand logo stuff, but at least for pop-culture I've had many a nice conversation started based solely on a persons shirt, it's not always the sign of a massive consoomer. Also great in know who to steer clear of when out in public.

Weird stares might be because by wear 'plain' shirts you're not giving a person much room to work with in starting up a conversation easily. You may also pull off the 'stock extra in a film to avoid corporate lawsuits' or 'stock photo man' which people might think is funny looking.

I definitely wouldn't recommend it unless you wanna do an IRL speedrun of how quickly you can get fired for being too slow.
Damn, I've just applied for a warehouse job. I'll let you know what my record is if I get the job.

I miss my plain shirt clothes. I bought a bunch of plain colour shirts from Primark, probably for around £5 each and they've lasted for 11 years to the point the material started to wear out.

I really want to replace them, especially cos I love women's fit shirts.
I've noticed a lot of fandom shirts are men's or unisex so they're not as comfortable to wear.

Speaking of replacing my wardrobe, I want more normie clothes that don't have characters and logos on them, they make me look more mature.

I still remember the one time someone commented on a shirt was wearing that had a logo on it. It was in a local convenience store, he offered a high five and i did it. It was a really funny and awkward exchange because at first i didn't even know he was talking to me. He just like said the name of the character that's logo was on my shirt and I though he was talking about some other shit to someone else but no, he was looking at the shirt. This was a years ago and I have never run into the guy again since, kinda wonder who he was and how the fuck I've never seen him again in that place before or after. He clearly was not on any sort of trip and seemed to be from the same area I live in which makes it even weirder. Somehow I don't think consoomers have had experiences like this. Just a hunch, no real evidence they don't.

If you think that's insane, I can pull out a used copy of Super Mario Bros for the NES with a ¢39 sticker from GameStop.

Damn, 39 cents? Never in my fucking life have I seen a game that cheap, used or new. Fucking wild. Reminds me of weird shit that happened back in like I think 2019 or 2018. I saw a shitload of copies of SMB3, both new in box or loose/used in various conditions at a thrift store. Wasn't goodwill, it was one of the other ones. They were cheap-ish at like the 15-ish dollars mark but I didn't feel the need to buy any. The things were gone the next time I went there and I'm guessing either a scalper/flipper bought them all or people just fucking jumped at the chance for Mario bros 3. I have no clue how in the fuck the the place ended up with that many copies of a single NES game, there's been similar shit at that place over the years liek the time they had a fuckload of used original Xboxes on the back shelf i never bought. People must've bought the things eventually because those are also long gone. Things didn't even have cables or controllers, just the fucking box and nothing else.
