Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

I just wanted to escape from this shitty world for a little bit and watch a dumb little iceberg video about a horror Chuck E. Cheese game.

And that was too much to ask for I guess lol.

Fuck, this is exactly what I thought a fan of Jim that actually likes his shitty wrestling stuff would look like.

The troon is horrific, of course, but I'm also reminded every time I see Jim's wrasslin photos just how sad it all is. A man in/near his 40s wrestling in what looks like rented office space or a community centre judging by the ceiling...what is the best Jim is possibly hoping for out of this?

He's too old to seriously start a career --not a wrestling nerd but the only WWE wrestlers over 40 I'm aware of either don't really wrestle any more or are only still about because they are absolute legends-- so at the very best he's gonna keep doing these rinky dink affairs until he grievously injures either himself or another person with his incompetence.

Why do they always have this smug smile? Look at this person, this blob has not a thing in its life to be smug about, but he imagined his identity without essence and merch he consooms is something to be proud of

Don't you worry, the tacks were disinfected (and he had his shots):

Jim really managed to make wrestling, which is extremely staged and controlled, even more sterile. And why did he decide to share a pic of his elbow? Am I supposed to look at that and be like "Wow, Jim, you worked really hard"?

Does anyone remember the Loose Boys? If not, I don't blame you.

But 4 years ago, Jimbo once put out a trailer for what was to be the first animated series on his channel and showcased his first real effort to make his brand more than the Rush Limbaugh of vidya games. And to give him credit, the trailer showed some promise.

The actual animation quality wasn't great, but it was both just a trailer and clearly not the point. And while I'm not an artist, there are some nice visual choices here. The different shades of purple and the different fonts of J combined with how they sit do a good job of showing who is meant to be the more "crass" of the two, at least on paper. The choice to have Jim be muscular when he would openly make fun of his own weight felt like an intentional joke. Combine that with some half-decent chemistry and the fact that Jim actually had someone else to talk to for once outside of his Echo Chamber Podcast made this look promising.

And then it came out.

I have no idea what happened between then and now, Jim alluded to how expensive animation is and so maybe he had to switch animators? Not sure. But these doodles have none of the personality or body language the trailer promised. Literally, only the Js survived (couldn't even color the shirts)? These remind me of MJTanner's avatars for their review, except their reviews aren't advertised as an animated series, and their avatars not bouncing all over the place makes the videos easier to watch.

Oh yeah, the animation is much worse. They just squash the avatar to hide changing between poses, which ends up looking much worse than if there was no transition at all. The parts when they're not on screen fair a bit better, though.

Sadly, the writing kills it. In the trailer, Jim mentions a single joke about Masturbating near kids as an example of who "adult" the humor gets in the special. As it turns out, it's basically the only joke at all. Every joke is either a penis/cum joke or a setup for one. It also means that beyond their vocals, you could swap who tells each joke/story and lose nothing. It was quite disappointing to realize that Jim's animated series was basically a Degenerate Story Time Animation.

Now for me, this was the first time I really disliked content from Jim, and may or may not have started my snowball is disdain for this man. But why share this 4 years after it matters? Well:
  • Jim Failed At Capitalism. About as simple as it gets, but before Mr. Anti-Capitialism started earning that nickname, he tried and failed to sell a product. I don't think that directly played into it, but it's fun to think about
  • Jim Is Not The Star Of The Show. Remember when Jim defended Angry Joe and reviewers at large from Nintendo when he said "people don't come to an Angry Joe review for the Nintendo game; they come for Angry Joe first." - because this showed that when removed from his talking points, Jim is all mass and no appeal. Given he has stated for years to have an ego, that can not have been a nice realization.
  • Failure To Branch Off. Jim nowadays is trying to transform his main content into what he'd rather do. Funnily enough, he once made fun of the idea by saying that if he traded the stability of the Jimsquisition to become a Fortnite Streamer, he'd fail in every conceivable way. I think this approach shows that Jim used to take his brand quite seriously, but now doesn't.
  • Jim Failed To Heed His Own Advice. I wasn't kidding when I said it was degenerate story-time animation. And for the big, non-corporate story-time animation channels, they are mostly harmless and safe stories with cute animation that anyone can watch: they may as well have been selling calories-free potato chips. But just as companies will make games in genres they don't understand and end up making a game that runs contrary to what people look for in that genre (hello, Back 4 Blood), Jimbo here made one of his most degenerate videos in a genre that succeeds mostly through wholesomeness. Oops.
  • Jim Gave Up After 1 Attempt. Maybe. Failure is always an option, and there's no shame in taking the L and moving on, especially since animation is quite costly. But after the Mr. Negative video where he revealed he doesn't make positive content because it underperforms relative to his negative content makes me REALLY wonder if he doesn't have the Spongebob ruleset with new projects - if it's not a money printer it's a waste of ink.
This has been a blast from the past no one else cares about; just an interesting bit of Jim Sterling's history that I didn't see in the thread.

EDIT: minor grammar and sentence fixes.

You mention the change in style and animation possibly being because of cost or a different animator but presumably its the same guy because he mentions a Justin the trailer, the guy credited for 'art director' (not animator) in the actual release is also a Justin and I have a feeling that its the same Justin who currently edits his videos today. Something very clearly changed in the almost year between the trailer and actual release but I'm not sure what.
