It used to be that almost all MTF were gay, and were with men before and after surgery or transitions. I can't pinpoint when that changed but they're all "lesbian" these days.

When did it change? No idea

I can't say exactly but it's 100% due to internet influences. I was a lurker at the troon scenes of the early 2010s and from what I observed, forums like Susan's place tended to have the more "classic" old school troons, while both tumblr and 4chan had a predominantly "attracted to women" trans crowd. The reasons were a bit different, at least as stated by the troons themselves

With 4chan I remember this image specifically being shared very frequently in the /a/ board:

Like, enough that you could tell it was a common sentiment in the posters in the years prior to when they finally made the /lgbt/ board

Alternatively, while there was also some fetishistic sentiment going around on the tumblr crowd, it wasn't mentioned or talked about, and there was kind of a few notable cases where it seemed like a part of it was the way "priveleged" groups were demonized, so specially if they were white identifying as a troon was the perfect way to feel "welcomed" instead as being one of the "enemies". This type is specially relevant to the "you don't need dysphoria to be trans" discourse, as it was very much (at the time, before trans acceptance took over IRL) a way to gain social capital in their online communities without real consequences.

There also started to be a kinda 4chan-to-tumblr troon pipeline (this was just before the "incel" community got more prominent). They got to affirm their fetish on 4chan, but as their politics became more left wing and they joined tumblr, they stopped aknowledging the autogynephilia part of it and started using the more "socially acceptable" talking points.

You can kinda see that shift in people like Andrea James of transgender map too, where aknowledging AGP became a forbidden subject.

On the other hand, also consider the fact that straight men have been mentioned in texts about transition from the start, from Hirschifield to Hamburguer to Benjamin and Blanchard and the Michael Bailey "The man who would be queen", but you have to consider it alongside the history of homosexuality. Of course at a time same sex relationships were unnaceptable, becoming a "woman" to be with a man was more welcomed by doctors than making a straight man a lesbian.
