A US breakup would be a complex, multi-layered affair that would in no way resemble "traditional" wars, but what it comes down to is that one side has a culture that knows how to endure struggle and privation, and the other doesn't.

Also, they can't just "send their best troops to protect supply lines." Every military grunt, police officer and private security guard in the country isn't capable of fully protecting US supply lines. All it takes is for someone to find an unguarded section of road/power line/train track/data cable and wreck it.
