That actually makes me sad.
She seemed fun in the interviews and stuff from the 80's.
Oh well. I've only met one star and that was at an airport bar. Just bullshitted with them about normal bullshit stuff for like 3 hours. I didn't even recognize them until they paid for the drinks and left.
Well, when you socialize with them or bump into them, you're their fan and therefore their paycheck. They're always much nicer to fans than to the band. I'm nothing but an employee so I get abused like one. When I've told people stories about Bette, they're like, "I met her once! She was so nice!" Well, yeah, she's not gonna be nasty to a fan, But I'm not a fan, I work for her. Big difference. I've seen Cyndi be super nice to people who meet her and then 20 minutes later she's insulting the shit out of one of her musicians.
Quick Cyndi story just to give you an idea what a psychopath she is. She was holding auditions for her touring band. I was already selected along with another for the band. She was still auditioning guitarists and we were present for that. One guitarist auditioned that she loved and she told the guitarist right at the audition, "You're in the band. I don't even care about who's left to audition". But rather than just call the audition and tell everyone left outside the room to just go home, she insisted on continuing the audition solely for the opportunity to degrade each musician auditioning.
One would come in, play and she'd be like, "Seriously? You came to an audition playing like that?!" or "Really? You thought you were good enough to play in my band?" None of these guys were bad in the slightest - anyone auditioning for this stuff is top shelf. But since she had found who she wanted and didn't need to be nice anymore, she saw an opportunity to use the rest of the audition to have these people think they still had a shot, and then as she called them in one by one she could get her jollies taking a giant shit on their self esteem. It's one of the more psychotic things I've ever seen a person do.
Here, to balance it out, two super nice ones are both Liza Minnelli and Patty Smythe from the band Scandal (Goodbye to you, I am the warrior, etc.)
I had a good friend tour with Liza and he told me she actually gets prostitutes for the band members in each city and treats the musicians super nice. I toured with Scandal a while ago. Patty is very sweet and she has a huge house in the hamptons in Long Island. She'd have the band out there in the summer to spend the weekend and she'd barbeque and feed us. She's married to John McEnroe and he'd be there hanging all weekend. They had a tennis court and he'd playfully challenge the band members to tennis games and we'd all get to play him. I'd be thinking how surreal this is, that I'm just having a fun game of tennis with McEnroe and having burgers with the chick who sings "I am the warrior".
By the way - there's a good example. I'm sure there's a ton of tennis pros who have horror stories about McEnroe and yet I had a great time with him. Then again, I'm not a peer or challenging him to a serious game. I'm in his wife's band and I'm there for burgers. But if you're gonna play him seriously, he's a fucking nightmare. It's kind of how pop stars treat their fans vs how they treat their band members.
But honestly, the really nice ones I can count on one hand. The nasty and abusive ones I can list for hours.
