Start conversating in your favorite fictional language; Al Bhed and Klingon are good starts.
That or tell them all about your problems, stretch it out as long as you can, and nightcap it with "So do you think getting a vaccine would have helped with any of that?"

And if they text you, start texting them at odd hours of the morning. Do the poo-in-the-loo thing and send them a Good Morning, every morning.

Show bobs and vaggination

I have been informed that since I'm not vaccinated I'll need a rapid COVID test to be welcome at a family Christmas party. I haven't been paying much attention to testing, and have no idea what the different kinds of tests are these days and how they work. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to get tested in the USA, specifically Michigan, on short notice? Preferably one that:
A. Does not involve giving out my personal information,
B. Is least likely to give a false positive,
C. Will be satisfactory to anyone at the party who might be nervous.

CVS and Walgreens here have rapid tests. Like over the counter.

Said OTC tests are usually just swab in nose (but not super deep), dip swab in test/fluid mixture, wait 10-15 minutes.

No personal information involved. No idea on false positive or satisfactionness levels on the various brands though.

I would wish them a Merry Christmas and cut them out of my life, but that's just me. Sorry you've been done that way. Beyond tired of seeing what the scared sheep say and do.

Oh, wife just came back from Costco, bought a box of FLTR brand masks. Costco sells a lot of these masks. Made in China, of course.

On the bottom of the box: "These masks are not personal protective equipment and are not intended as replacements or substitutes for personal protective equipment. These products are not intended for medical use or to prevent any disease or illness. Each mask is intended for single use only - discard immediately after use. (Bold mine.)

What the fuck. If these masks aren't useful for their intended purpose why should anyone buy, much less wear these masks? Obviously useless, just decorations showing you outwardly comply with incompetents' idiotic rules. Useless masks, useless vaccines. Got a Lysenko in Washington telling Joey what to do.

It is painful to watch and live in a country that runs scared of every little thing. People during World War II, and maybe even later, would laugh at what's happening now. They had REAL shit to deal with. They also had REAL leaders in office. Now....Jesus...

Dr. John Campbell reported yesterday, Australia seems to shift from "heavy handed governing" to a more lenient approach towards the handling of Omicron?

"We have got to get past the heavy hand of government and we have got to treat Australians like adults," Morrison told reporters, urging authorities to shift from "a culture of mandates" when it comes to masks and social distancing rules. "We're not going back to lockdowns. We're going forward to live with this virus with common sense and responsibility." source
I'd love to see that from other authorities too.

Although when looking for the sources, at the press conference on December 22th there's lots of talk about "basic rules of behavior", vaccinations, indoor mask wearing and so on. But still. Sort of a silver lining.
If your abusive husband doesn't beat you tonight because he's in a good mood he's still abusive.

Saw these on the Biden thread, what might be an ELI5 for it?

For the 2000th time over the last two years. ADE. Call me Cassandra.

There are take-home tests that do show positive/negative. Funnily enough, I've heard you can fake a positive result by using anything relatively acidic (or having anything acidic in your mouth from a recent meal) like lemon.

Remember the good old days, when the measures were taken to prevent the collapse of the health system: "flatten the curve"? Well, they don't even pretend anymore, the measures are in place for their own sake.

Secretly abolished: Hospital traffic lights no longer plays a role in Bavaria
Bavaria has long since abolished the Hospital traffic lights, but without communicating this in a big way. Even if it actually jumped back to yellow in the coming weeks, that would not result in any relaxations.

NÜRNBERG - Since the beginning of December, the number of covid intensive care patients in Bavaria has been in free fall. In the next two weeks, the number could even drop below 600, causing the still deep red hospital traffic lights to turn yellow. But this traffic light no longer exists, as Bavaria's Ministry of Health has now admitted.

It was only at the beginning of September that it was introduced with great fanfare as a new benchmark in Bavaria: the hospital traffic lights. In view of rising vaccination rates, from now on the incidence alone should no longer be decisive, but rather the burden on hospitals.

Peak at 1081 covid intensive care patients
When the delta wave hit, it was realized that the traffic light levels had not been cleverly chosen and corrections were made. Henceforth, the traffic light was to turn yellow not only when there were 1200 hospitalizations in seven days, but also when the number of covid intensive care patients exceeded 450. When the number of intensive care patients exceeds 600, the traffic light should turn to red.

Nobody really cared about that for a long time now, because the number of Covid ICU patients caused the traffic light to turn so deep red that other traffic light colors were no longer even a thought. On December 4, the sad peak of 1081 Covid intensive care patients in Bavaria was reached.

Since then, however, not only the number of infections but also the number of patients in Bavaria has been falling rapidly. As of Dec. 23, 791 intensive care patients were still being recorded. Even if a massive wave of Omikron should roll across the country and this also includes many severe cases, it is to be expected that the situation in the intensive care units will continue to ease in the next two weeks. After all, infected patients usually end up in intensive care only after ten to 14 days.

Traffic light could actually change to yellow soon
This means that it is quite realistic that the number of intensive care patients will fall below 600 in the next two weeks, which means that the traffic light will change to yellow and some relaxation will come into effect. Technically.

Because if you look on the website of the Bavarian Ministry of Health to find out exactly which regulations would apply in the event of a yellow traffic light, you will find nothing there. And not without reason. Because the hospital traffic light is abolished in Bavaria long since. This time completely without large fuss.

"The hospital traffic light was contained in the 14th Bavarian Infection Protection Measures Ordinance; in the currently applicable 15th Ordinance, this regulation is no longer found," the ministry succinctly informs. Since November 23, 2021, the hospital traffic light therefore no longer exists. Regional solutions are now only available through the regional hotspot lockdown from an incidence of 1000.

Patient numbers play no role in rules
So, for the time being, the number of hospitalizations and also the number of covid intensive care patients no longer play a role for the applicable rules in Bavaria. Even if the number of intensive care patients should fall below 600, there will thus be no relaxation.
In view of the then impending wave of omicrons, Bavaria's state government will probably also be very happy about this.

The ministry is currently not in a position to say whether the hospital traffic light will ever be reintroduced in Bavaria: "The corona measures in force at any given time are regularly reviewed to determine whether they are necessary and, if so, whether there is a need to adapt them. Unfortunately, the dynamics of infection events do not allow binding statements for the future."
As others have said again and again: it's very easy for your rights to be taken away, it's very hard to get them back.

Cautious optimism here. Mark Drakeford (Welsh Health Minister) has been accused of lying to the public after he said omicron was “probably” just as severe as delta, despite three studies concluding the opposite. Scottish football fans with anti-Sturgeon gov banners at games. Andy Burham praising the gov for not going ahead with restrictions due to them damaging mental health. English gov with 'good news to follow' and buoyed by 'hopeful omicron data'. It's not a complete change of heart but could 2021's Christmas miracle be no restrictions after xmas? I fully expect a lockdown from this shitshow government.

They are running the covid is a cold but it is probably not a cold it is covid bullcrap again

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-59768366

They are telling everyone the truth that covid is a cold, because that is what it fucking is, but in a way that makes out it isn't yet at the same time saying it is.

Who the fuck buys this crap?
to answer your question nobody

The entire restrictions were built off of security theater and not from any meaningful studies that definitively show that there was a marked reduction in viral transmission if restrictions came into play. Many governments were emotionally swayed by the initial propaganda that came out of China (people people dropping dead in the street, piles of bodies being trucked to be burned, people getting their doors welded shut by the government) and had the gut instinct reaction to do whatever it would take to achieve minimum casualties.

The fact that some governments to this day (such as Germany) will put restrictions on/off based of an arbitrary count of cases is maddening.

The part that drives me insane is that this didn't sway governments - it swayed people like me. At the very same time I was watching those videos, governments worldwide were refusing to take any steps to address it and the media was going full "just the flu bro".
