Secretly abolished: Hospital traffic lights no longer plays a role in Bavaria
Bavaria has long since abolished the Hospital traffic lights, but without communicating this in a big way. Even if it actually jumped back to yellow in the coming weeks, that would not result in any relaxations.
NÜRNBERG - Since the beginning of December, the number of covid intensive care patients in Bavaria has been in free fall. In the next two weeks, the number could even drop below 600, causing the still deep red hospital traffic lights to turn yellow. But this traffic light no longer exists, as Bavaria's Ministry of Health has now admitted.
It was only at the beginning of September that it was introduced with great fanfare as a new benchmark in Bavaria: the hospital traffic lights. In view of rising vaccination rates, from now on the incidence alone should no longer be decisive, but rather the burden on hospitals.
Peak at 1081 covid intensive care patients
When the delta wave hit, it was realized that the traffic light levels had not been cleverly chosen and corrections were made. Henceforth, the traffic light was to turn yellow not only when there were 1200 hospitalizations in seven days, but also when the number of covid intensive care patients exceeded 450. When the number of intensive care patients exceeds 600, the traffic light should turn to red.
Nobody really cared about that for a long time now, because the number of Covid ICU patients caused the traffic light to turn so deep red that other traffic light colors were no longer even a thought. On December 4, the sad peak of 1081 Covid intensive care patients in Bavaria was reached.
Since then, however, not only the number of infections but also the number of patients in Bavaria has been falling rapidly. As of Dec. 23, 791 intensive care patients were still being recorded. Even if a massive wave of Omikron should roll across the country and this also includes many severe cases, it is to be expected that the situation in the intensive care units will continue to ease in the next two weeks. After all, infected patients usually end up in intensive care only after ten to 14 days.
Traffic light could actually change to yellow soon
This means that it is quite realistic that the number of intensive care patients will fall below 600 in the next two weeks, which means that the traffic light will change to yellow and some relaxation will come into effect. Technically.
Because if you look on the website of the Bavarian Ministry of Health to find out exactly which regulations would apply in the event of a yellow traffic light, you will find nothing there. And not without reason. Because the hospital traffic light is abolished in Bavaria long since. This time completely without large fuss.
"The hospital traffic light was contained in the 14th Bavarian Infection Protection Measures Ordinance; in the currently applicable 15th Ordinance, this regulation is no longer found," the ministry succinctly informs. Since November 23, 2021, the hospital traffic light therefore no longer exists. Regional solutions are now only available through the regional hotspot lockdown from an incidence of 1000.
Patient numbers play no role in rules
So, for the time being, the number of hospitalizations and also the number of covid intensive care patients no longer play a role for the applicable rules in Bavaria. Even if the number of intensive care patients should fall below 600, there will thus be no relaxation. In view of the then impending wave of omicrons, Bavaria's state government will probably also be very happy about this.
The ministry is currently not in a position to say whether the hospital traffic light will ever be reintroduced in Bavaria: "The corona measures in force at any given time are regularly reviewed to determine whether they are necessary and, if so, whether there is a need to adapt them. Unfortunately, the dynamics of infection events do not allow binding statements for the future."
