Oh, I think a good portion of the people who wind up involved with Tom are in the MATI category in at least some part. Part of the joy of Tom is that you can trash him, fuck with him here or on AMB, and not feel too bad about it because of how shit a person he is coupled with his own desire to interact with us. I mean, pretty much the whole reason I jumped on the Tom wagon was that he happened to have molested a dog that shared the same name as my own childhood dog. Any compelling books on the topic? All I know is some Mongolians got stuck here, beads and feathers were traded, endless war for millenia, and then White people ruined it. Burger education and all.

Off the top of my head, the Great Law and The Longhouse is a really good look into Iroquois politics prior to and during European colonization of the Americas. It doesn't romanticize or sugar coat the rougher parts of Iroquois society, but it treats them as a serious civilization to be examined anthropologically. It's the one I was reading in school that got me really interested in the topic. A big one is that they had strong ideas of democracy and interweaving kinship systems as a way of tamping down conflict within their alliances. The Iroquois were Six separate nations that came together to sign a peace treaty to end internal warfare, and it lasted centuries (and technically still exists I guess, just subsumed by the US and Canadian governments). I really like the way they came up with complex marriage rules that basically made it so that your kinship network extended out to all the villages and people around you, to specifically stop the sort of posse round up wars that had been a problem. There's claims that the "Great law of Peace" helped shape the US constitutions, and there's some evidence of that, though it's not as strong as some people say. At the very least people like Benjamin Franklin were aware of it and on record as admiring aspects of the Iroquois system, which was basically like a proto-federal structure. I also found the way they integrated captives into their society sort of interesting, it was basically a slave->assimilation system that rewarded people for adapting to their society, because they took captives explicitly to replenish numbers. That might sound bad from a modern day perspective, but Europeans at the time were working thousands of people to death across the Caribbean and Brazil so like, eh? It was a period of world history where that happened.

Huron-Wendat: The Heritage of the Circle is a good look at Huron politics and explores both the potential and limits of oral history in piecing together history, and joins it with primary sources and archeological evidence to paint a good overall picture of the culture. One of the anecdotes that always stands out to me is that when a Wendat man travelled to France, and was both impressed by the country, but also absolutely horrified by what he saw them do to their children. That's something the Jesuits also mentioned, that the Wendat seems much more protective and less prone to beat or kill their children than the French ("they love their children much more dearly than we do"). I always found that one interesting and worth exploring, because it sort of predates Europeans adopting the idea of childhood as a thing, and something that was precious to protect.

These are both pricey textbooks on my bookshelf though. I'll look and see if I can find something a little cheaper/ebook that's also rigorous in terms of scholarship. There are many books out there talking about Indigenous governance, but a lot of it is what I would consider poor historical scholarship.

I mean, half the problem with people like Tom is they treat indigenous cultures like they were all edenborn savages living like the Na'vi. The idea that the peoples of the Americas never had war is insane, but at the same time judging people for it is stupid, because Europeans also went to war despite being as genetically similar as the peoples of North America. If you just approach them as humans who admittedly got the short end of the stick during the age of discovery, then you can appreciate them as just another civilization, with good and bad parts. I mean, the Athenians were kid fuckers and the Spartans ruled over a population of slaves that they murdered as a test of adulthood, but we still use their ideas as the basis for our social order. More on topic, the Bible literally records the Jews genociding all the other peoples of Israel but it's still the basis for Christianity. Basically that's my argument over and over, you don't have to claim that they were better than European society in every way to appreciate the human ingenuity that existed here. Moreover, all these groups adapted to new ideas and technologies as they made contact, and their contemporary politics are really complex and interesting. There's a lot of indigenous people who are just looking for things like owning the land that was actually promised to them in treaties so they can start their own economic development. It's not just impotent whining like Tom, it's careful legal arguments and working with governments to find a way forward.
