It was a great sci fi action movie for its time, but the 360 degree slomo trick that made its fight scenes look cool got old fast, the virtual reality technoparanioa, leather trenchcoats and techno music are 90's af, and other movies explored pretty much the same ideas with more humanity and depth (like the underrated Vanilla Sky)

Anyway, that PL is to establish that I was familiar with the show enough to be aware of the characters and some of the fandom.
The fandom decided that Dean and the angel Cas were hot for each other. It was established fanon that they were a couple. They swore up and down that there was chemistry and obvious subtext throughout the whole show ever since Cas was introduced in season four.
If you don't watch the show you won't know this, but Dean is a horndog. For women. It's a huge plot point in the earlier seasons when things were still lighter and fluffier.
I thought having a bi relationship on TV was great, even if it wasn't official. I was told over and over that it was "all but official", so when I started watching I was super excited.
But nothing. I saw a close friendship between two men, the kind where there's love; but of the platonic, familial sort - which makes sense because family is a huge plot point in the show.
But the fans persisted. They drew the actors into the debate. Jensen Ackles, who played Dean, was team Best Friends. Misha Collins, who played Cas, was team Destial (their fan name).
The show apparently tried to throw the fans a bone in the next to last episode when they had Cas tearfully confess his love to Dean, and then he died before Dean could say anything back. Fans emotions were mixed, many were pissed because it was right at the last second like that and not able to be reprocicated by Dean. Frankly, that was the best outcome from my perspective, but no1curr.

The demographic for Supernatural was 40-25 year old women, because of the ages of the actors (Jensen was 26 when it started in 2005 and 41 when it ended) and the fact that the cast was primarily hot, buff men. I know there are troons and genderspecials in the fandom, it was the most popular show on the cw and the longest running sifi show ever, but most of us are generic, probably straight white women. Yet too many were convinced there was totally a gay couple that wasn't there.
Destiel is one of the most popular pairings ever, at 103,000+ fics as of this writing. It is large enough to be its own fandom. When the final season aired, many shippers - the same one who bitterly complain about antis - threw a massive shitfit to the point they DEMANDED Misha Collins apologize for saying the Spanish dub, that had the I Love You in it, wasn't canon. He bucked and cucked.
For years, the actors have been harassed by shippers, asked what their comments are on the pairing, what slash fics they like, etc. They did the same when Hannibal was running. While Mads Mikkelsen admitted he likes to read some, some fans took it overboard and presented him fucked up content for fan signings. Instead of being respectful and thanking him for being so good to the fans, they visibly made him comfortable. There was a tumblr dedicated to this drama from a Hannigram fan herself, but for the live of me I can't remember. It's been so many years.
Now, they got a shit painting placed in the Capitol Building (I'll list it at the end). The showrunner, Bryan Fuller, is a pro shipper and supports the art and fics, but one of these days he's going to be hit with a scandal. The people he caters to will turn on him. Especially since he is responsible for the shit tier writing of Star Trek Discovery. Initially, the Hannigram pairing was meant to be a gruesome-platonic one where Hannibal would sucker up Will before murdering him. That turned into a 'murder husband' plot even though Will was canonically married with a child. The female characters of the show are virtually non existent on AO3. Which is amazing because, according to AO3's own data, there is FEWER female representation in fandom that there is in Hollywood. And remember, fandom is primarily written by women. They know full fucking well what males are and are admitting men are better than women.
I'm ranting, but I know exactly where you're coming from. It's funny how any official gay couples do not get fandom attention but two men being together for any reason is deemed queerbaiting. They did that for BBC Sherlock to the point Martin Freeman told those shippers to fuck off. The best part is, and I've noted this many times, these shippers are overwhelmingly enby Aidens who claim not to know what sex is but the vast majority of the biggest slash pairings are between white males. I thought they were quite terrible movies that tried to borrow from other movies, random anime and the kitchen sink. With sloppy writing, sloppy characters and a terrible ending, trying to read too deep into the Matrix to "figure its message" is basically doing all the creative work yourself. You can't make a message or make a statement when you are just gluing "cool scenes" together, therefore you can apply any meaning you want to it, since it has not much of one by itself besides the obvious you see on the screen.
I always thought the movies were hackjobs and the authors were a pair of turboweebs (the cringy type that would use words like "japanimation"). First that opinion was "a hot take" because they were popular movies hyped to hell, then it was transphobic because the authors were trans. Maybe in 40 years it'll stop being a controversial opinion to not like this mess.
