You start learning Cree in Saskatchewan starting in Kindergarten. It's how I still remember how to say hello, how are you, and have some tea. Plus Canada has radio stations that teach you Cree. Also helps that my cousins are First Nations so that's an extended part of my family where learning such things are handy.

Where I'm from, local tribes constantly speak ill of each other. The most influential tribes here are the Choctaw and Chickasaw, both of which look down their noses at Cherokee for being "common." Both tribes are fantastically wealthy, and are constantly trying to one-up the other with their newest purchases. Elitism and venality are rampant, just as with ever other human institution. Indians are just people, romanticizing them is pointless.

i'm aware of all this, having been an interested observer of intra tribal conflicts between traditional councils and the tribal governments, especially when it comes to the money. I stand for indigenous egalitarianism vs industrial fascist authoritarianism for all people sincerely living according to universally agreed on moral principles, most particularly the golden rule. none of the "people" confronting me have qualified as traditional indigenous people. i'm getting set on by anglicized apples.

Mr. Owlflaps is of Chickasaw descent. His tribe got some serious dosh. They were smart enough to build casinos to draw in the white crowds in the dry counties of Oklahoma. When the pandemic hit, the governor built 80k tiny homes to house the elderly, because he was afraid of them dying and losing the last speakers of the Chickasaw language.

Those tribes also waged wars against each other for land and owned plantations and slaves, hilariously enough. After the Louisiana Purchase, I believe the Chickasaw popularized the act of scalping. Once the Trail of Tears happened, the Choctaw and Chickasaw were so incredibly pissed at the Union that they joined the Confederacy at the start of the Civil War.

The Confederacy promised Native sovereignty in the territory that is now Oklahoma, as long as they fought on the side of the South. Given that one of the prerequisites for Civilized Tribe status was, pre-Civil War, acceptance of the chattel slavery of Africans, this would make them horrible bigots if they were held to the same Progressive standard as their white fellows.
