- Increased passive income
- Announced that her fans may have no expectation of creative output
- Rid herself of the expense of employees?
Doesn't all of this seem an over-the-top reaction to a contrived controversy from 9 months ago?
There may indeed be a victory here, but I suspect it belongs to Lindsay Ellis.
That's certainly a fear I have. But I doubt if she were that clever, she'd need to pull a stunt like this to do any of this. This reeks of either a desperate attempt to avert a decline, or alter the narrative behind said decline... while pocketing thousands of bucks doing so.
It's clearly either a way to reverse her terminal decline - which will probably fail - or a clever way to start cashing her chips before her numbers and influence really started to crater.
Pocketing damn near $25k a month to do nothing but day drink and whine about how oppressed you are is a pretty sweet racket if you can get it.

I certainly noticed that in that New York Times article blasting trad publishing offering massive book deals to any idiot with large social media followings, one of the people quoted was the head of St. Martins Press, who was probably one of the harshest voices in the entire feature.
This might be a ploy to keep the publisher from dropping her, to boost her sales, or maybe even just buy time to beat the deadline on book 3.
Remind me to check Bookscan numbers in a couple weeks to see if this changed her sales at all.

I will say this much, aside from bleeding your publisher of money, which she may well have done, the worst thing an author can do is blow off a deadline or make themselves deadweight. Or say, repeatedly kick a hornets nest of controversy that brought negative attention upon the author and her books.

I think her second book crashing is one of the reasons Lindsay decided to bail. She realized that promoting it would be a waste of time, and there were not going to be any prestigious awards for it coming her way. At worst, she's quitting a losing game. At best, this will spur sales enough to convince her publisher to not drop her and let her release the third book in the trilogy.
Oh no, the publisher will absolutely get that third book from her if they have to force it out. Then they'll dump it on the market with no fanfare and as small of a run as they can contractually allow, and then kick her to the curb and tell her never to come back. Possibly followed by telling every publisher that will listen to avoid her at all costs.

Somebody else has probably said it but I personally think her retirement is just because of a combination of things. Her aspirations outside of Youtube has sunk. She's not only a failed novelist and filmmaker but she's also part of Breadtube which has a very insular audience compared to someone like Doug and IHE who have a wider, more general audience. Said audience, which she also cultivated, can also cancel her if she says anything they consider wrong. And presumably, other people in her clique can join in with her supposed fans too. So realizing that she has nothing and/or nobody to truly fall back on, along with her being an alcoholic, she probably had an epiphany and broke down crying. Adding the fact that Doug Walker still has more subs and views than her, this is what I think led up to her retiring.

Her specifically mentioning in her tweet to Scott that to feature Jill Bearup was as validating as Standard (the agent/management arm of Nebula) onboarding her as a client is important and deserves more scrutiny IMO. Despite the name, publishers operate in three quarters - Spring (Jan-Apr) Summer (May-Aug) and Fall (Sep-Dec). To give you an idea, right now publishers (including myself) are prepping books and promotional material for the Fall quarter of 2022. I'm actually holding our own completed Summer 2022 in my hands right now. I just helped draw up an advertisement for a book that drops next September, and we have the cover, pull quotes, even the first draft all done already.
Unless that release date is wrong, that there isn't even a title and cover for a book that's supposed to drop in less than a year is completely damning. That means behind the scenes, something has to have gone very, very wrong.
Which would be another possibly tally in "had a come to Jesus meeting with her publisher" triggering this meltdown. The Campbell Award might have bought her some extra time had she won, but the nomination is as worthless as making the NYT Bestseller list for a single week.
That's one thing I didn't think about that strengthens my thoughts on why she retired. My guess is she looked at her book sales and decided she's given up on everything thus leading up to her retirement. She tried so hard to promote her books, shilling them in her videos, so seeing their performance must've hurt her enough to not bother with the third book anymore.

According to Lindsay and her defenders, she has been "harassed" for years. Ever since Gamergate, so at least eight years. She even gave a wheezy TED talk about "bad faith" criticisms when she got pushback for her white genocide joke. Why was this "cancelling" the straw that broke the camel's back? Why did she wait NINE MONTHS to quit? As far as I can tell, there's been very little mention of it since the "Mask Off" video. To me, there are two possibilities.
One: she genuinely believes, either consciously or subconsciously, that her lefty critics are right. By her own admission, she gets heaps of scorn from right-wingers, and she just blocks, ignores and dismisses it. Why can't she do that with these woke detractors? Why can't she say to one of her eight employees, "You're now my social media manager, I'm done with it"? Maybe because she wants back in the club. She agrees with these doofuses, so when they call her "bigot", it cuts much deeper than someone calling her "SJW". She keeps searching her name hoping that her station has improved in the wokescold sphere, and it hasn't. And it's driven her insane.
Two: this is all a con. She got a signal boost from her cancelling, but didn't help her book sales. So, she's making a big histrionic show of leaving Youtube, raising her public profile and number of patrons, followed by the glorious return. Even in her farewell screed, she downplays how well her channel is doing, saying it's just "inertia" and "running on fumes." She's hinting that she needs more money. She's begging for support, emotional and financial, and it's working. She got her name into MSM outlets, a wave of twitter sympathy and more subscribers.
I'm leaning more and more toward the second option myself.
Nebula also hosts a show or two from Tom Scott. In retrospect, this very much strikes of someone there telling Lindsay to maybe bite her tongue, and when you're hungover from day drinking, you can't think right. More than Raya, I bet this is the catalyst.
