The Matrix review was kinda shit. Pretty much just 50 minutes of gushing over how meta it is and 4 minutes spread throughout of going, "oh, yeah, everything else about it is pretty shit." Apparently if your soulless cash grab occasionally winks at the camera it gets a pass.
Yeah I’m confused. Didn’t they just give that Ghostbusters movie a spanking for “remember”? Why is it ok when they amp that up to the point that it’s almost literally leaping off the screen?

This was a very weird review, it almost just felt contrarian for the sake of contrarian. I noticed Jay kept mentioning these other people and their opinions like “watch me be more enlightened”. Who gaf?

So they actually ... Liked the new Matrix movie?

Seems a little contrarian given how they tore Ghostbusters: Afterlife a new asshole. lol. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is not without its big flaws (flaws big enough to have some people even "turn" on the movie, if I'm being honest), but good lord give me that movie over The Matrix: Ressurrections anyday.

Just because a movie spends its time explicitly saying "lol movie corporations and sequels, am I right?" doesn't mean that it's a good or an intelligent movie. The movie is downright obnoxious, actually ... Especially given that it unintentionally becomes the exact same type of terrible sequel that the movie spent its first 40 minutes pontificating over. Yeesh.

The Matrix review reminded me a bit of their review of Us. That movie also had a baffling and confusing plot, but Mike and Jay praised it anyway because of the meta narrative. Being meta and self aware doesn't excuse the rest of a movie for being shit. Yes, Gremlins 2 does have meta elements, but it can still be enjoyed even if you have no knowledge of Joe Dante and his relation with the studio executives. If my enjoyment on a film hinges on whether or not I'm aware of all of the behind the scene drama and what personal struggles the director was going through at the time, then it's probably not a very good film.
While RLM doesn't virtue signal, they are gen x liberals. I'm sure on some level that makes them want to give movies made by Blacks and troons a pass even more. "It's a movie made by a Black guy about Black people stuff and commentary on White America, it was okay. It's a dumb meta movie that doesn't do anything interesting other than make fun of dumb fans and Hollywood suit, it was okay."

That bit where they start pitching all those sex pests as directors was hilarious, especially when they got to Louis C.K.

Also that was the first time I've actually seen one of the Wachowskis speak post-transitioning, and all I have to say is god dammit lol.

And Jay doesn't give a shit about The Matrix in the first place, so he wasn't going into this with really high expectations.

What is wrong with women?
The really funny thing is that this is another sign of how far into the pits of hell our "civilization" is and no one cares. The fact that this didn't end their career and there wasn't national outrage or whatever. No one can call it crazy and gross because that'd be "bigoted"

They also threw shade on No Way Home too. While I do think that movie also indulges in memberberries, that does not excuse Matrix for doing the same damn thing. At least people want No Way Home, which can't be said of Matrix Retcon.
I guess they really are done with Marvel is they aren't going to do a review of the new Spider-Man.

Their review to me was, more or less, "Matrix fans are cringey and deserve to be shit on (complete with period local news footage of dudes in trenchcoats mock-fighting in line), fuck you if you actually wanted a serious Matrix sequel because it's a stupid series, it's okay that this movie is shit because they said it was going to be shit in the movie, woah meta."

And like, okay, if that's your take, whatever. But it's a dumb take.

I don't really have much of an investment in the Matrix series. The original was great, the Animatrix is overall pretty good, and the rest of the trilogy I thought was cool as a teenager but they didn't age as well, to the point I don't care much about them anymore. I had zero hopes that a 20-year-later sequel would be good, but Matrix 4 was just boring when it wasn't making me cringe. About the best I can say is that it didn't make me angry, it just felt like a waste of my time. I'm sorry, I don't care how "meta" you are, that doesn't make up for a garbage script. You can't go and say that X thing is stupid and act like it excuses you when you literally go and do X thing later in the movie. If you hate aspects of unnecessary sequels, then just don't do them! Make something better! You're not making some arthouse film here, you're making a CGI-packed blockbuster. That's not to say you can't have some deeper elements, but shit, know what you're making first and foremost.

However, I'm glad that they brought up how this movie was just Lana's Larry's very expensive therapy session for dealing with his parents' and friend's deaths, as well as how the lead singer of the band that did the terrible Rage Against the Machine cover pissed on a guy's face. The former adds a lot of context to why this movie was the way it was (that is, not good), and the latter...well, it pretty much speaks for itself.

I didn't get the impression they thought Matrix fans deserved to get shat on or anything like that, but Jay's tastes were more tickled by this version and Mike can make do with and appreciate it to an extent. They both have very cynical views of Hollywood and were gagging with joy at the meta stuff, which blockbuster films avoid, which enabled them to mostly handwave away all the bad film making that occurred.

Personally I think you could reduce their entire review down to the end of the video where they explain why they both recommend it. After a bit of umming and ahhing Mike thinks it's a fine film to watch at home, and Jay thinks it's a shit sequel but an interesting film.

Looks like a dogshit to me, with the meta stuff being unbearably cringey, but I understand Mike and Jay's stances. I didn't find them disrespectful; the film sounded like it was though.

Might've been a bit harsh with my summary, to be fair, and not for any particular reason. I still enjoyed their review, though that isn't saying much since they can spend an hour talking about shitty 80s instructional videos and still make it entertaining. And I get the recommendations too, but I still think they wouldn't be nearly as forgiving if not for the meta commentary, which I personally found grating and annoying.

I think Jay said something along the lines of it was better that they didn't give the fans what they wanted, which was another standard Matrix movie. I find that sort of fan antagonism to be a pretty shit attitude regardless of whether it's coming from creator or critic, and I have since TLJ, though there are probably earlier examples I'm just not remembering at the moment. You don't have to give the fans everything they want; sometimes you can go in a different direction that brings new things to the table they didn't even know they were asking for. But giving them nothing and telling them they're stupid for wanting it? That's just asinine.

But I'm thinking way too much about a movie that Lana Larry clearly didn't bother putting much thought into, so I'll leave it at that. Hope his future therapy doesn't cost $200 million.
