Applied mathematics has become very valuable in engineering fields over the last few decades because a combination of faster computers + large amounts of experimental/test data in most fields has made computer modeling about as reliable as prototypes/mockups at a much lower cost. This created jobs for CS + math majors developing the modeling codes - even if Rumer had no aerospace background she would have been able to develop a solver for whatever NASA needed her to model once they showed her the equations and boundary conditions because her degree would have looked at that stuff a lot, just not specific to aerospace. Some applied math programs will also cover statistics and everybody needs that - anything to do with quality control (like, say, making sure components on a billion-dollar space probe are within spec) is going to need a statistician. This might also explain the industrial-engineering degree since it does cover statistics, mathematical optimizations, and simulations along with other NASA-relevant things like manufacturing/supply chain.
