FFS is one of those procedures where I think people are oversold the results and undersold the risks, which is a consequence of cosmetic surgery becoming more and more commodified.

You have to sign a legal release when you get your wisdom teeth out cos there's a risk of permanent nerve damage if the nerves along the jaw get cut while they're drilling out those teeth. But somehow shaving along your jaw bones right next to those nerves is seen as quite a standard procedure and not a very serious, risky surgery.
The thing is, it is seen as a serious, risky surgery in any context outside of transition. Women are warned off from shaving their jaws all the time. The risk of nerve damage is front and center, and very few people in the West bite the bullet (it’s more common in East Asia but really only for those making a living off their looks). Generally people are advised to try masseter Botox first to see if atrophying the muscle resolves their discontent without going all the way down to the bone. Even communities of deeply insecure and image obsessed people understand that some dangers are greater than others, and some fantasies aren’t worth what you pay for them.

The commodification of cosmetic surgery has reduced appreciation of risk overall, but it isn’t the primary root of all this blasé bone shaving. Those risks are undersold in cases of FFS because they’re trans procedures — same way the risks of Lupron are undersold when used to block puberty for trans kids specifically. Transness is understood as a condition of spiritual suffering so great that any physical pain pales in light of it, so the transition is always worth what you pay, even if the cost would strike someone without the condition as unthinkable.

It’s a bad mindset that’s given cover to scores of terrible doctors with misplaced self confidence, god complexes, and greed. Of course there’s always a price. And of course longterm physical damage is devastating, no matter what the spirit wants in the moment.

Kill James Bond will be Killing James Bond soon. “I hope it’s going to feel liberating for us and for the listener to be done with James Bond,” writes Alice after freely deciding to absorb more Bond schlock than 99.9% of the planet ever will and making fat stacks of cash along the way. After everything, they’ll still be tied to his name. Feels great to be liberated via podcast from an oppression you chose.

I know they mean that they grew up as sons of an empire in decline and felt pressured to live up to this retro masculine ideal, to romanticize the golden age, the stoic power, the brutality offscreen, etc. But 1) boo hoo so hard to grow up with every comfort and a few expectations attached; 2) no one actually expected you to behave like this cornball movie character; 3) wouldn’t it be more liberatory, if media can be liberatory, to pay attention to movies with heroes who don’t sleaze on women and shoot foreigners; and 4) of fucking course they wouldn’t do 3). They love the sleaze. They join in even though it’s Bad when Bond does it because it’s Good when they do it because they’re Lesbians For Real.

It’s baffling and fascinating watching people pretend to hate something while loving every part of it except that which throws their own insecurities into view. Olly and Alice would love to have women all over them. Alice is always posting about guns, watches, alcohol — classically Bondish things. But it’s edgy and good when he does it because he’s a Lesbian (married to a man) and a Socialist (on Twitter), which means something because he says it does — until the cold light of reality pierces his window and hits a blubbery shitposter half assedly LARPing as a cool person who gets out of the house and does shit. Olly, for his part, said before that the ultimate dream of an actor of his type was to play Bond. Evidently he’d never get the chance because he isn’t good. If he hit it big as a man, if he were celebrated in his craft (lol, but imagine), would he hate Bond with such ferocity? I doubt it.

People who actually hate Bond don’t decide to spend 50+ hours watching all the movies and cheerfully ogling the girls. Under the bright mask of political disagreement it’s all sour grapes and ressentiment. If they don’t want to read or introspect about it, they can always table Bond and queue up that Contra video.

Wait wait is « Alice » actually married to a dude LOL

People often mention that Contrapoints in particular seems to follow her hate threads on places like 4chan and here on Kiwifarms and I can't even imagine how humiliating it must be with the way people talk about and draw her.

I don't even know what I'd do if people were sifting through the absolute worst parts of my personal life with such giddy glee and making it all completely publicly available.

I bet Contra enjoys the Olly bashing tbh. Being internet famous must really mess with your head - you have a hardcore cabal of worshippers at your beck and call as well as the underground postings of a MS paint artiste who paints you as a grotesque.

I hope that in 2022 we can have some breakthroughs when it comes to acknowledging a persons sex matters but failing that my second hope is for @narcissistic injury to resize their images. I love what you do but just click on the image and resize markers will appear at the corners then you can drag the image so it doesnt take up the whole screen <3

He's on Twitter as @seraph76 — Christopher Caldwell-Kelly, 46, American with a few science fiction/fantasy publications under his belt. Claims to be a he/they nonbinary AMAB. Also they're poly and Alice has basically implied that they no longer have sex.

Andrea Dworkin was very clearly a Kinsey 0 heterosexual who claimed lesbian wrongly, you dork. Why else would she write of the friction between women and men with such furious power while having only detached positivity for women in their own right? Lesbians don't stay married to men if they have any say in the matter, and Dworkin did, as do the vast majority of lesbians now living in the West. Yes, there's a long tradition of people claiming lesbian to be edgy when they aren't. They have always been insufferable. Right on brand for Alice.

"Lesbian friend from college" lololol what is wrong with bisexuals? Do they think it's groovy and mysterious to claim lesbian when they aren't? Because it just exposes their own discomfort with their natural selves. Nothing wrong with being bisexual and preferring one or the other, just fuck outta here with this "men are like burgers" shit as if that's a lesbian experience.

While we're at it, might as well make note of the time Alice sneered at an actual gay man who killed himself while struggling with internalized homophobia.

And the time Christopher said that Alice is racist but also a Good White Person Because She Tries.

Never forget:

Bizarre vibes all around from this situation. Christopher's mournful middle aged babyface, Alice's relentless lesbian aesthetic posting, the asexual marriage, the onlineness of it all. Sad stuff that would be sadder if the parties involved weren't "queer as in edgy" type pseuds.

I’m so sorry lol…. I’m always on my phone and they look good on mobile. I don’t see what you’re seeing and I’m not even sure how to adjust

well, I'm fucked if this isnt a point by point explanation on the science of Ollys seethe.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/BAcKAkVAEOs
that part on flying monkeys actually reminds me an awful lot of Lindsay quote tweeting someone who criticized her recently, knowing that her fans would angrily mob that person.

I also can't help but notice that these straight, white, cis men who would have to admit that criticism aimed at them isn't necessarily bigotry no longer have that problem once they transition. I can't remember the last time Contra or Olly got criticized and didn't just deflect with some self-pitying about the scrutiny that trans women face or whatever.

Regarding the tweet imagine making some insanely hysterical commentary about your ingroup being “immiserated” and denied health care, and then immediately doing a plug for your product. It be like if the people suffering with AIDS in the 80s at a protest were screaming about lack of health care or research but then suddenly turned deadpan to the camera and said “you should buy my book!” I know there is no trans “crisis” but even still he truly is AbiGHOUL.

When he’s not crying about muh equal rights he aspires to be a nerd bimbo tee hee hee:

One thing that's always bothered me about this video (not this actual response video, but Olly's original "Transphobia" vid....is that bit at the beginning about "yer dad". I have since heard SO MANY YouTubers and people on Twitter recommending this video because the "Yer Dad" explanation part is apparently so brilliant and articulates something that's so hard to articulate....

And like, I still dont get it. Like the guy doing the response video, I get the first iteration of "Yer Dad" that Olly shows, and how it might be bad. But the second one, the one that Olly says is more "insidious" and shows the "Yer Dad" character in a "Mouthfeel" t-shirt saying that he has literally zero issues with trans people. Olly goes to great lengths to say how Yer Dad 2.0 is "wrong" and claims that he even used to think this way himself. But he never explains what exactly is wrong.

I have some issues with King Critical but goddamn its so refreshing to see somebody go through PT's shitty videos and call out the fact that he can't even be fucked to even make an argument most of the time, let alone a good one. That whole thing about how he just throws 'Wrongly' on top of any Gendercritical point and leaves it there and goes no further and how utterly, infuriatingly intellectually bankrupt that is is so fucking true.

The weird thing is that I hadn't noticed when I first watched PT's video. I think the problem is that I consume all of these people's content as background noise while doing something else. Now watching King Critical, it's impossible not to miss just how vacuous PT's video is.

It underscores both how ridiculous it is for a youtuber to be claiming to be giving a philosophy education, and for a youtuber to think that his audience is a market for philosophy students, when probably most are like me and just using youtube as background noise or to wind down.
