I’m with TFT on this one. There’s no way the Tranch stayed afloat for the last year without a recurring income. Kevin is known to have an inheritance, and if the other one was a programmer he could easily have had savings or investments enough to keep paying rent for a few years.

Moving to a country known for an absolutely crushing recession, one of the lowest birthrates in the world, and specific culture-bound forms of depression as a way to cure job dissatisfaction, celibacy, and run-of-the-mill Yankee depression is certainly a leap of logic I can see Kevin making.
The "I'll be happy when" syndrome has been refered to as Conditional Happiness and it actually can make you feel worse, since you're training yourself to see happiness as some far off future thing, instead of learning how to be happy right now.
