What left does he have to lose? He has no home, he's alienated his friends to the point that KF is more interested in his life than anyone he voluntarily associates himself with, he's covered in some of the most embarrassing tattoos possible... I keep thinking "this dude's absolutely hit rock bottom," but then he just keeps chugging like this was his plan all along.

Since Phil is lazy as sin and has no concept of worth/value he thinks you win things. You earn them in life, friends included. You be a good person share hobbies you earn a friend, someone thinks of you, hey this person is a someone, I want to spend my limited time on this earth with them when I can.
Phil is so warped in his mind set he thinks you get friends like you get called down for the Price is Right. Just like he thinks him being so retarded he gets autism bux is a victory.
I wouldn't rule it out he sees a couple having a nice dinner, then pop into their nice new car. He probably thinks Obama and the CIS HET army gave it to him, not knowing this guy is a some kind of plastic engineer and figured how to make a better stint for heart surgery.

Clearly friends are people who feel bad for you, and will stand in solidarity with you and your faux transracial, faux transgender problems by shaving your back and letting you slum around their houses while giving back nothing.
