They're stuck between a rock and a hard place, but it's a hell of their own making. For whatever reason (I'm going with Big Pharma wanting endless money), the coof got hyped up as the great plague of our time, and the public was driven into a frenzy of mass hysteria. I'd hazard a guess that the constant fearmongering against the Bad Orange Man didn't hurt these efforts, with many people already psychologically primed for the world to end any day now (remember how lobbing a single missile at Soleimani was going to start WWIII?). It didn't take much for the previously hysterical to slip straight into coof psychosis, which was then leveraged against Trump to remove him from office under the pretense that he didn't know what he was doing, he caused hundreds of thousands to die, and once the adults were back in charge, the pandemic would be over.
Except that wasn't the case. Every time they tried to make headway towards their goal, either the virus or the public would stymie their efforts. Loosening guidelines? Public outcry from the Branch Covidians, accusations of being in Big Business's pockets, "think of the children" hysterics. Vaxed and boosted? The virus was already three steps ahead in mutations, and the jabs turned out to wear off almost immediately. And the inconsistent messaging began to wear down the majority of the public that was just going along with things because they thought everything would go back to normal if they just followed orders. Those that could look past the propaganda at least got a rueful sense of vindication as everything that was previously called a conspiracy theory slowly came true.
And now, with the coof little more than a cold for pretty much everyone who gets it, the jabs having no positive effect (possibly negative), and the feds flailing about trying to get the plebs to do as they're told, the CDC and their ilk are in a bit of a jam. Biden desperately needs a win, but at the same time the Dems could really use those emergency powers to fortify the midterms. The public is by and large exhausted and wants life to return to normal, but the true believers screech too much any time things start getting walked back. The economy is barely holding on amid the supply chain disruptions and increasing inflation, but the feds don't want to look ineffective and wishy-washy by rescinding the mandates. And of course, Big Pharma wants this to go on forever so they can keep the gravy train rolling. There are so many groups pulling this way and that, there's no message they can put out to satisfy everyone, so they keep this middle-of-the-road stance where they keep advocating everything they already were, too afraid to come clean with how useless they've been the whole time.
I don't feel sorry for them in the slightest. They made their bed, they can go fuck themselves in it.
