Hyde’s interrogator is 31 year old Ian Washburn. Washburn, who has been coping and seething for seven years over a past insult to his manhood, cannot help but reveal his intentions immediately. This tactical blunder is motivated both by emotion and a misguided belief that he has the upper hand in the encounter.

Hyde responds immediately with a reversal of roles between interviewer and interviewee. At numerous point Washburn will state his intended topic of conversation, only to have Hyde overrule him. The assertive, dominant body language of Hyde contrasts Washburn’s submissive posture. Washburn is unable to hold Hyde's unbreaking eye contact. Washburn affects a smile throughout the interview, but when his emotions are clearly elsewhere this comes off as disingenuous and haughty. Any opportunity to build rapport with Hyde has likely already passed.
Over the next cringe-filled half hour, Washburn and Hyde will remain in this uncomfortable stalemate. This case study underscores the importance of a realistic interrogation strategy, and how one must adapt tactics while the suspect is present.
