The Final Fantasy Thread

So I finally played episode intermission and it was pretty good. As good as the main game? No, not at all. A fun time though. I got the game on EGS and expected hell so I was prepared to refund it, but after fucking with the settings a bit I actually got it to run smoothly. Only one stutter while playing the dlc, and it was a big one on the ending cutscene. Might play the main game again later, who knows. Right now though I’m playing Lightning Returns.

Lightning Returns is the best of the XIII trilogy, IMO. Dressup job system and a better combat system really did it fot me. Plus I was stressed out about remaining time the whole game which was fun.

Final Fantasy XIII gave me cancer

So here's the thing with Dragon Quest. The most recent game is DQ11 which is out on all current systems. And it is really, really good. They totally nailed it.

There are very good remakes of 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 on the DS and 3DS so all of them are very approachable. Dragon Quest 9 was a DS game. 10 was a Japan-only MMO. And then the first three games are pretty easy to find if you develop an interest in the series. And unsurprisingly they are good. But they are noticably older in style and execution.

You can expect a trditional turn-based JRPG experience that plays upon classic series tropes and ideas. The joke is that every Dragon Quest game is more or less the same game every time but they still manage to make it great. You can play any of them and have an excellent time assuming you enjoy the style of gameplay. It is worth knowing that these are long games... especially 7. And there is always a lot of post-game content as well as battles and challenges for nerds that decide to max their level and get all the best equipment.

Given the question you asked, I would start with the newest game which is DQ11. From there you should probably choose between DQ8 or DQ5. 8 is very popular and brought a lot of new fans to the series, plus it is great. 5 is probably the best game in the series but we are talking a difference of inches and not miles between games. My personal favorite is DQ7 because it keeps going and going. But yeah, everything from 4 to 11 is great, you really can't go wrong. The weakest of the bunch is 9 because it is too easy. And unless you speak Moon, you can ignore 10.

We also have a DQ thread on the forum. Remember that DQ is popular because it is traditional. Sometimes you will see people complaining about basic story and predictable archetypes and boring fantasy settings with castles and dragons; those people are missing the point. The game is loved because it still tells a classic sort of story with traditional gameplay and it does those things really, really well.

Here we go, this is the image I was looking for. Of course it was on the first page of the DQ thread and I started on the last page. It is missing newer games but sums up the series pretty well.

Dragon Quest is a very intimidating series to get into due to how giant it is, but I've got an itch for it ever since playing Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and discovering that I freaking love just about any game that's directly inspired by Dragon Quest.

Finished X-2 yesterday, and have to say I rather liked it. I can certainly see why some people don't like it, but for me I enjoyed the battle systems, dress spheres, the amount of side content and the general light hearted tone. Wasn't a fan of the music though, and some of the save points are really badly spaced out, especially when there are lots of enemies that can wipe out your party with ease. Whilst the graphics are obviously dated, Spira is perhaps the most beautiful of the FF worlds, being very vibrant and colourful

Biggest complaint with x-2 was that it was too fucking easy minus some bosses and the last floors of via infinito. Yeah the battle system is solid and the extra content from the international version is great such as more jobs, pokemonsters and an extra dungeon.

I finished lightning returns and it was certainly much different from the other games in the trilogy. Very unique. Bhunivelze was hilariously easy, something I didn’t expect because I heard he was obnoxiously hard. I actually had more trouble trying to kill the earth eater in one of the trials than Bhunivelze. This made me drop the trials and go in without the ultima gear because of this motherfucker. Yeah, random enemy in front of a door was harder than God himself. Kinda reminds me of FFXIII-2. Proto Behemoth was harder than Caius.

Anyway, cool game. I’m continuing FFVIII.

Aren't you able to take on the final boss at any time in Lightning Returns? Or am I thinking of something else?

Got any tips for beating Caius? I could never do it and eventually just gave up, but I’d like to go back and finish Lightning Returns at some point.

You mean in ffxiii-2 or lightning returns? In ffxiii-2 just over level. In lightning returns try using magic when he switches to ravager and physical attacks when he switches to commando. Also chronostasis spam.

I never played FF7. I tried a few times but never got far. I don't know, something about it just didn't click with me. Played and love FF4, FF5, FF6 and FF9, especially 4. I recently got the FF7 remake on PC though and I'm kinda digging it so far. I always heard Cloud was an asshole but he's kinda cool. I like his standoffish, all about business manner. I also LOVE that the Japanese at Squaresoft made Barret into a tanned, white body builder instead of a black person. That's why Japanese games will always be the best, they don't cater to the negro and their caucasian apologists.

Dude, just get DQ11. It's fucking awesome as shit. I've never beaten a single DQ game and I loved it. I've played DQ1-3 a tiny bit on nes as a kid, but never got very far because I was young and didn't have the patience for it. You'll love DQ11 if you like old school jrpgs. Like the other person said, they absolutely nailed it.

I meant Lightning Returns, thanks.

There's a reason for his aloof manner manner early on. I never got far enough in FFVII proper but apparently from what this thread has mentioned he never actually was a proper SOLDIER and so he merely acts like how he thinks a SOLDIER should act thanks to Sephiroth being a total douchenozzle, but eventually he drops the facade and goes from the virgin SOLDIER wanna-be to the CHAD SNOWBOARDER. I also vaguely recall a lot of the promotional art (at least in the USA) from the time of the initial PSX release having Cloud be a lot more chiseled like you'd expect from a guy who carries a heavier sword than Guts' around than his more modern, softer AC/Remake look.

Mostly right. His SOLDIER act is based off his memories with his buddy Zack, who was a SOLDIER, and a little bit of idolizing Sephiroth. He also didn't want Tifa to know he didn't make the cut.

So, question then. How did he wind up with the blue-green eyes of one? Somehow he wound up fooling everyone but Tifa (who knew better thanks to being childhood friends) into thinking he was a full SOLDIER. That's nagged at me for years. I'm guessing Hojo was involved somehow, but specifics?

Unless I'm wrong, blue-green is his normal eye color, it's the glow that signifies he's a "SOLDIER". After the Nibelheim incident, Hojo saw some sort of potential in Could and decided to experiment on him (and Zack). So Cloud didn't exactly get the same Mako treatment, but it was close enough and maybe a little something extra, as Hojo was always keen on trying to "improve" his experiments. Tifa didn't actually know he wasn't in SOLDIER, but had some suspicions when his story didn't add up. And yes, Aeris likely knew fairly early on that he lying and, but never said anything because... She's Aeris.
