At least 18 are dead after a series of explosions and shootings. There have been at least 4 separate, but coordinated incidents.

CNN also just announced that there are also 60 hostages being held in a theater.

Update: More than 128 dead. We got a new rating. Basically, everything went fucky.

This is horrible. Absolutely fucking horrible. Hearing the explosion in some of those videos struck a sharp note in my heart. I can't comprehend how goddamn insane the people responsible for all of this are. My thoughts go out to the citizens, the victims, and their friends and families in this dark time in France. To any and all French Kiwis, please stay safe.

After a little digging, I've heard some people speculate that these attacks might partly be in retaliation for the (still unconfirmed) death of Jihadi John via drone strike. Do you think that holds any water?

EDIT: Although Jihadi John's death is still technically unconfirmed, US and UK officials are almost certain that it was him.
This attack was too coordinated to be a knee jerk response to Jihadi John's death.
These sick people were probably planning this for quite a while.

Update:I managed to get home safely.
There's a lot of sirens and vehicles speeding down the streets, mostly ambulances; everything is stilll pretty chaotic.

Reuters is reporting it

Les Halles is probably mostly closed at this hour.Except maybe for the cinemas, so hopefully there won't be too much of a carnage.
The Bataclan theatre seems to have been evacuated, and they might apparently have killed some assailants?
The most worrying situation right now is the gunmen possibly still roaming the streets.

The nationwide state of emergency means they will be closing the borders. No one knows for how long, but there is going to be a locdown at leat for the next few days.

Nothing more to say than: "You let Muslims with a medieval ideology and modern weapons into your society. What did you think would happen?"
I'd prepared a long rebuttal to this, but it probably wouldnt do any good, so all I can say is this:
Glad to see you're already exploiting these events to bolster your rhetoric when we aren't even done counting the goddamned bodies .

Will France keep its borders closed now? This probably will create a big backlash against immigration

France can't keep it's borders closed for anything more than a show of force. France is a major hub for over land shipping in the EU, and the UK will put pressure on them if they did, as the channel tunnel is a major artery, and as an island nation Britian depends heavily on international trade for their needs.

Yep.
Moreover, the Schengen and EU treaties mean we can only close the borders for short periods of time in extremely specific situtations, so it won't last very long.

The big one as I said is the UK, they're still a alarmingly net importer of food (A frankly unique situation in the EU), which makes their need to keep trade lanes open critical.
